Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused a group of individuals of planning to stage a coup next week.

Zelensky warned of "internal challenges" facing Ukraine, beyond the growing tensions over Russia's buildup of forces near the Ukrainian border.

"We have challenges not only from the Russian Federation and possible escalation - we have big internal challenges," Zelenskiy said Friday, according to Reuters.

"I received information that a coup d'etat will take place in our country on Dec. 1-2," the Ukrainian president added.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned Friday that Russia would face ramifications if attempted to invade Ukraine, amid a worrying buildup of forces along the border between the two countries.

"If Russia uses force against Ukraine that will have costs, that would have consequences," Stoltenberg said, per The Associated Press.

"This is the second time this year that Russia has amassed a large and unusual concentration of forces in the region," he added.

"This military buildup is unprovoked and unexplained. It raises tensions and it risks miscalculations," Stoltenberg said, noting that "there is no certainty about the intentions of Russia" but recognizing "this is a military buildup by a country that has invaded Ukraine before."

it's just incredible how many people seem to want a war with russia. they must be nuts. there's just no other reasonable explanation for it.

Managed to eat moderately yesterday, and getting back to less today.

Thanks for all the fish.

Used as a humorous way of expressing farewell, used especially when a business closes, someone leaves a position, something is retired from the market, etc. The phrase comes from the title of the 1984 novel by Douglas Adams, the fourth book in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Today, the long-running restaurant is closing its doors for good after years of poor business. This morning, the owner put a poster in the window reading, "So long, and thanks for all the fish!"

@Lookout

thanks! it has been a pleasant enough holiday here at chez shikspack despite a few runny noses (not mine yet, thankfully). i broke my usual habit of avoiding black friday sales to hit my local record store for the record store day black friday drop. i picked up a nice little feat double album previously only available as a bootleg and the jimi hendrix experience paris '67 show. so it's been a good listening day.

have a great holiday weekend!

A long-awaited report from the Interior Department recommends taking steps to increase fees for drilling on public lands, arguing that taxpayers are currently being shortchanged.

The department says that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) should carry out several policies that increase these rates.

Drilling on public lands represents 7 percent of domestically produced oil and 8 percent of domestically produced natural gas.

But, it does not make similar concrete recommendations for offshore drilling, which accounts for 16 percent of all oil production and 3 percent of natural gas production in the U.S.

Instead, it notes that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is currently working on changes following a different report recommending that it ensure it is "capturing the full value" of the leases it offers.

For both onshore and offshore drilling, the report says Interior will continue to study the best way to incorporate the cost of the planet-warming gases carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — but it didn’t lay out specific steps that would be taken.

The burning of fossil fuels, including oil and gas, is the main driver of climate change.

"In June 2017, [the Government Accountability Office] reported that studies showed that raising Federal royalty rates for onshore oil and gas could ‘decrease production on federal lands by a small amount or not at all but could increase overall federal revenue,’” it said.

The recommendations do not go as far as President Biden said on the campaign trail that he would in limiting oil and gas drilling. At the time, then-candidate Biden promised to effectively stop new drilling on federal lands and in federal waters by “banning new oil and gas permitting.”

Nevertheless, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland described the recommended reforms as “urgent,” in a statement.

i've been ignoring the epstein show since he was extinguished. my guess is that if ghislane maxwell had anything to reveal that might take down somebody important, she'd be six feet closer to jeffrey epstein.

@joe shikspack

is going sentimental - after all, the current and all living former heads of the agency attended her father's funeral.

The Epstein/Maxwell operation was clearly about blackmail - Epstein was clearly getting enough out of the deal to live well, but the main beneficiary...?

Amazing scenes from Melbourne - hundreds of thousands turn out to protest lockdowns, mandates and a pending bill that would grant sweeping dictatorial powers to the premier of Victoria if a pandemic is declared.

Lot's of Eureka Stockade flags, but watch carefully not to miss an American Flag or two, a Gadsden "Don't Tread on Me", "Let's Go Brandon" (with numerous local variations: "Let's Go, Ban Dan" (Andrews)). Extra points for spotting "Of the people, By the people, For the People".

HOWEVER - the authoritarians are hardly giving up and resorting to more and more extreme measures - in the Northern Territories (zero Covid deaths) Aboriginal communities are under hard lockdown with the army and police forcibly removing people to quarantine camps and reportedly forcibly vaccinating people as young as eleven:
