Indigenous Peoples Day is sadly US centric, and coincides with Native American(s) Day somewhat. If you poke around, you will find both names assigned to various days from late September through mid-October. In 1989, South Dakota decided to honor Native Americans on the date already officially assigned to celebrating the life of Christopher Columbus. They named this celebration Native Americans Day .Various jurisdictions across the US celebrate Native American day on various dates.
In 1992, the city of Berkeley, California, declared the date hitherto assigned to Columbus Day to be "Indigenous Peoples Day", and, in time various other jurisdictions followed suit.
A Trifecta, of sorts:
National Sausage Pizza Day
Southern Food Heritage Day
World Obesity Day

Please Note: I wish my Monday Open Threads to remain on the front page because I sporadically say things in them that I wish to be as widely read as possible. Accordingly, please do not post any Covid-19 related commentary in the comments. Thank you. There is a separate OT, Part B, aka The Dose, where all such material is welcome. Thanks again.
Ok, it's an open thread, so it's up to you folks now. So what's on your mind?

Hope your trip is going well...

Guess I celebrate southern food everyday, but I will gladly honor the first nations peoples today.
Love the Lakota's contribution to this playing for change piece. One of my favorites to play and sing.

Y'all have a great day!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning LO, thanks for the well wishes.
I is back, not too much the worse for wear, but far busier than I would like to be, a condition likely to persist until mid-November. Ah well.
I'll postpone listening until I make my breakfast, but thanks. The idea sounds great.

No! It's COLUMBUS DAY, Damn You!
You Anglo bastards took everything else away from us. Now you take away the one Italian-American hero.
I wish he had killed ALL the damn Ntive americans. anf the english too.
So today is "Spit on Italians Day".
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Good morning Voice. For what it is worth, Columbus was NOT
ITALIAN, but Genoese. There was no Italy when he was born and lived. He was born in 1451 or so and Italy was born in 1860, if memory serves me well. Beyond that, he also never sailed for Genoa. He did land a job as a CREWMAN on a merchant ship of some sort (not sure if it was Genoese or not), but it was attacked and sunk by pirates off of Portugal. He managed to float to shore on some floatsam, began to go to school, and, as far as I know, never saw Genoa again.
PS: I am not an Anglo Bastid, I am a Celt, Irish to be specific, and hence no great fan of Merrie Engelonde.

Hi all
Hi EL! Seein' any birds?
Leave it to Berkeley to lead the way on the issue. Would love to see Columbus fade away and the native people's consideration take precedence.
Coincidence you ask? A friend explained that there were none, proof being that there were 24 hours in a day, and 24 beers in a case.
1991 – Prof. Anita Hill delivered her testimony regarding Clarence Thomas OR Put another way, on this day in 1991, Joe Biden was being an asshole F'n Americas future up for all.
Hope all is well!
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Morning Dysto. Mostly, pellies, cormorants, gulls, sparrows
and such. I have what I hope to be a goodintl pick of a cliff covered with pellies on my phone, to be dealt with later.
I love your proof regarding coincidence.
I omitted the doofus in chief's role in the Clarence Thomas fiasco out of curiosity to see who would first bring it up. Congrats!

Water Protector Legal Collective
Indigenous Peoples' Day is a day of resistance purposefully celebrated on the date that once commemorated Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the “Americas” and a legacy of colonialism. On this day we celebrate the Original Peoples and Original Nations of Turtle Island.
We are still here!
Our work focuses on these program areas:
Protect the Sacred: Protection and defense of sacred sites and Indigenous lands threatened by extractive industry and mass development projects
Indigenous Sovereignty and Self Determination: Legal support and advocacy supporting Indigenous Sovereignty and Self Determination of Original Nations across Turtle Island and Internationally
Solidarity and Kinship: Knowledge sharing, care, and solidarity work with Indigenous communities, Relatives, and Allies
Corporate Accountability: Advocacy, research, and divestment work focused on redressing harms caused by corporations and ensuring accountability both across Turtle Island and Internationally
Earth and Climate Justice Advocacy: Legal support and advocacy for climate and earth justice, including regulatory and administrative processes across Turtle Island in defense of the water and land, in opposition to extractive industry and mass development projects
Resistance Training and Education: Providing resistance training (“know your rights”) and education to communities across Turtle Island and the world seeking legal support
International Indigenous Human Rights Advocacy: Advocacy for Indigenous Human Rights around the world in international fora and with international community organizations.

Feh - just do what Canada does
and call it "Discovery Day". That covers everyone from the first Northeast Asian wanderers through Leif Ericsson to John Cabot to Samuel de Champlain, to whomever and whenever (possibly including Saint Brendan, Prince Madoc and Henry de Sinclair, if you like a side of myth).
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Good evening Maven. Good point. I prefer
Indigenous Peoples' Day, but prefer it to be global, including the Maori, Bantu, etc. Beyond that Indigenous Peoples Day (western hemisphere) is still good, we celebrate a great number of colonists and others of that ilk, so it is good to give those who were here when they arrived a few nods as well.
