You must have enjoyed the Catskills at this time of the year - so green and refreshing.

Does Fred prefer Earl Grey or English Breakfast ; ).

Cheers you two!

Panther Mountain, one of the Catskill High Peaks, is thought to be the site of a meteor landing that occurred 375 million years ago.

Oh my. One wonders who has a memory going back that far?
Perhaps geologists can imagine things that far gone.
I dunno, but is a pretty area.

Drive thru there along the Delaware Water Gap on the way to Michigan.

@Bollox Ref Beautiful Catskills pic BR! A couple summers we lived in the NEmost town in NJ right at the New York stateline. We birded in the Catskills in summer a bit when lots of breeding warblers and such. Beautiful area.

Love your Foggy Morning shot, Janis. I know I've said this more than once, but I always marvel at how green it is in NZ.

In all my spider face close-ups, they all have six eyes. Not sure about the main/aux set up of the eyes.

@Socialprogressive As a general rule, all spiders have 8 eyes. Often front view photos only show 6 of them well. There is one specific group of spiders called 'six-eyed spiders', as they are a completely different lineage and family of spiders from all the rest. These are the recluses. As in Brown Recluse, aka Violin or Fiddleback Spider. I think 4-6 species of recluse in the U.S.? There may be some other 'one-off' 6 eyed species, but in the U.S. only the recluses have 6 eyes, and your spider is definitely not a recluse. Appears an orb weaver of some sort. Great pic of it!

@Socialprogressive GREAT bug photos SP! Awesome shots man! The little orange butterfly is a male Fiery Skipper. That leafhopper is great, bunch of similar types with awesome colors like yours. There are some like yours called Candy-striped Sharpshooter. The long-bodied fly with black abdomen might be a Midas Fly (below the Syrphid). Wonderful photos!

poly_moth_resized.jpg

The Friday Photography post has always been one I've looked forward to over the years at Caucus99%. I'm a lurker, been so since the crap at that other site in 2016. But I used to do photography (the old kind, with a dark room!), and I still love it. So... I thought I'd offer a recent photo. This is a Polyphemus moth. It appeared a week ago, on the grass outside the garden at my farm. This was during the heat wave in the PNW. We were sweltering. I'd never seen such a huge moth in 'person' before. It was 5 inches or more wide! She was so beat up, her very short life was ending. But she let me gently pick her up and move her from the grass to a Dianthus in the garden. And she waved her beautiful torn up wings. She died over night, never moved from the spot I'd put her in. I told her I hoped she'd laid many, many eggs, and that they were all fruitful!

What a beautiful moth and resting place you chose for her. I love that you gave her a perfectly fragrant and colourful place to rest.

I am very happy to know that you enjoy lurking. I thoroughly enjoyed your contribution today of visual and narrative imagery. Thank you.

@Sima great Polyphemus Sima! Beautiful moth. I have only seen a few, have one in the freezer. When they are down like that, it is usually because they spent the night mating/laying eggs, and it is over for them. They are spectacular in person. The night bug light people say don't even look for the big silk moths until after midnight. Very cool!

I gotta fly but will check back later or in the morn...

Here is a grasshopper of some flavor I never saw before. Shoot first, ask Q's later. With a pic you can usually get an ID. I have a friend that lives in the Huachucas in SE AZ, he has 55 species of grasshoppers on his YARD list. He'll ID it for me.

This is a Buprestid, often called Jewel Beetles. This I think one is genus Dicerca. There are weirdly iridescent in that as you change angle it goes from all that salt and pepper camo, to metallic bronze or gold metal shiny amazing. This was on the car mirror today and if I moved it would have bolted so took the angle in overcast served...

intermittent internet. Wonderful picture, as always. The "veggie" (are squash veggies?) is a chayote. I first encountered them at some now long gone restaurant in Hayward, CA where they made it into a dessert (served chilled).

Tons of great photos to yesterday's column, but way behind schedule already, tons going on and needing attention all of a sudden, complicated by cat sitting and heat wave.

be well and have a good one

edit, changed non long gone (what?) into NOW long gone
