Real Enthusiasm
A lot of people the other day made hay over a poll showing that Hillary supporters were more enthusiastic than Bernie supporters . I think they spoke to roughly 600 people in total but it was like very significant, statistically speaking, at least according to the pollster, Gallup.
Well Bernie held a rally on Thursday in the Bronx, where he gave a speech to a crowd of folks at St. Mary's Park in Mott Haven. Here's what the New York Daily News had to say about his rally there.
Bernie Sanders rocked the Bronx on Thursday night as an estimated 15,000 people thronged St. Mary’s Park in Mott Haven for the Democratic presidential candidate’s first major New York rally.
The air was electric and had the feel of a summer concert as supporters filled the park and surrounding streets to listen to Sanders boast about his Brooklyn roots and share his populist message.
“This campaign is about creating a political revolution,” Sanders told the gathering. “You are the heart and soul of this revolution.”
The Vermont senator drew huge cheers from the predominantly young crowd as he promised to invest in education, infrastructure and health care.
My, my, my. Fifteen thousand people attended that rally just to listen to an old Brooklyn Jew give his standard speech. A man with with no major support from the Democratic establishment, funded almost entirely by small donations from ordinary people. A candidate the media goes out of their way not to cover. FIFTEEN THOUSAND PEOPLE! Oh wait a minute, there were actually more people who weren't allowed into into the park for the rally, but he spoke to them, too.
In a surprise move before his speech, Sanders addressed an overflow crowd of about 2,000 people who were outside the official event area.
“It looks like the South Bronx is prepared to tell the billionaire class that they cannot have it all,” he greeted the attendees. “It looks like the South Bronx wants to create an economy that works for all of us not just the 1%.”
Two Thousand more! Seventeen thousand total heard Bernie today in the Bronx, and on a weekday!
Oh, by the way, Hillary Clinton, the establishment candidate, the former Senator from New York, the person with all the money from SuperPacs and billionaire donors, and all the endorsements and support from the members of the DNC down to every goddam local Dem politician you can think of, the presumptive nominee, also gave a speech today, at the State University of New York in Purchase, located in Westchester County, a wealthy suburban area just north of New York City. How many people attended her rally?
More than 300 people turned out for Clinton’s speech, but in the middle of it, roughly 50 Sanders supporters stood up and walked out, shouting, “If she wins, we lose.”
More than three hundred? I guess that means less than four hundred right? And fifty of them were Bernie supporters there to protest her. Tell me again, which candidate has the most enthusiastic supporters? Because maybe my eyes are deceiving me. Then again, maybe Gallup just created a lousy poll with an inadequate sample size that doesn't stand up under close scrutiny, like a lot of pollsters this election cycle who have been proven wrong about his support.
I leave it for you to decide.

If anyone would like to borrow the image in my sig you're welcome to it. I actually made one during the height of OWS with the ows web site on the bottom. I decided to bring it back, change the color and put Bernie's web site on the bottom.

Hey, didn't you forget to mention the person who spoke
Right before Bernie? He is René Perez a d is Puerto Rican and Latin American rlyalty, at least music wise. Watching him now, and I'm so moved by him… he's impressive. GREAT surrogate. GREAT. I want to see him more on the trail. Dayum! Human rights and LGBTQ rights advocate! Sanders speaks out about Latin American dictatorships financed by United States in Guatemala, Chile, and Argentina"
"Someone like Hillary Clinton does not deserve my vote. The thought of HRC who has dared to praise the likes of Kissinger, the author of the most despicable Latin American genocides and the architect of Latin American dictatorship, responsible for all those who disappeared in the 60's, 70's, and 80's… I am not for her. Not just an insult to oneself but an insult to the countless children who have lost their parents and grandparents. I support Sanders because there are still good people in this country and the United States will no longer be ill-regarded, a country that tortures or believes in colonies but instead strives for unity, equality and peace. If Bernie Sanders were PR, he would fight as many PR to bring freedom and self-determination to his country." Talks about how it is an insult to Latin American self-hood to vote for Clinton, outright."https://www.reddit.com/r/Kossacks_for_Sanders/comments/4csmfl/senator_be...

This Rene Perez. And it's not rap it's reggeton.
René Pérez Joglar; February 23, 1978) is a Puerto Rican rapper, writer, producer and founder of the alternative rap group Calle 13. He has won 24 Grammy awards in total; making him the Latin artist who has won the most gold-plated gramophones. He studied art for 8 years and has directed some of his own musical videos. His lyrics have earned him the respect of many music colleagues and critics and have even been studied as part of school and university courses. He has been recognized for his social contributions and serves as the face of campaigns for UNICEF and Amnesty International. He has consistently defended education in Latin America and the rights of the natives. In 2009 he referred to the governor of Puerto Rico as an "SOB" for laying off more than 30,000 public employees.[1] In November 2015, Residente received a recognition award in Barcelona due to his commitment to social awareness and for promoting peace.[2]

Only 17,000? (SNARK)
Gee, only 17,000 you say? Wow, compared to less that 400 for Mrs. Clinton's event. I'm sure Bernie's campaign staff are devastated by the low turn out. What are they going to do? OMG, does that mean he should throw in the towel, will his campaign fall into complete disarray? Wow, over 300 at Hillary's event. Just wow! (Snark over)

Bernie is coming to Green Bay tomorrow! :)
I am so excited, it's unreal! I'll be volunteering at the event, so my hope is that they give us good seats and that we get the first crack at meeting Senator Sanders. Hee hee.
I called a bunch of people tonight who wanted to work the event to give them all the details. There's a bunch of Secret Service bullshit volunteers have to deal with, which is not fun, but they at least let us know in advance. The national Bernie campaign wanted us to get 100 volunteers to work the event, and I think we got close to that.
The Bernster will be in Wisconsin all weekend ahead of the Wisconsin primary, but I'm glad he's already made it to New York! It's so awesome that Bernie got 15,000 in the Bronx! Wow! He was in WI earlier today, so he must be really racking up those frequent flier miles.
The venue tomorrow is the Kress Center in the UWGB campus, which fits about 4000 people. I'm sure Bernie fill it to capacity because, seriously, why wouldn't he? Heh.
Hillary Clinton doesn't have the enthusiasm here, and that's quite obvious. GO BERNIE!!!
I miss Colorado.

What a great speech & video

Because, you know, the same people keep telling us how close the election is. I bet the vote count won't be a 17,000 to 300 ratio.

People are finally cluing in
to how The News is carrying water for this woman. God, it's so sickening. I wish the Sanders campaign would pound on that online a little more to give Clinton some "incentive" to schedule another debate. She should NOT be allowed to get away with this, she's trying to run out the clock again, and it's complete bullshit.
I'm sending every bit of good mojo I can to NY and WI (and WY). GO BERNIE!!!
In the past two days, I received
4 emails from Hillary
2 from Chelsea
1 from Bill
1 from the Mookster
And two direct mailings from the DNC, one which told me I won a chance to be polled on issues.
In response to each email, I responded, "Get me off your damned list!" And in reply, they each responded, thanking me for my donation and support.
I guess they just don't read the responses, do they?

mailings and emails
I am sending one back to Emily's List today, scribbled with my opinions(hey, they asked!) about how I am not supporting Hillary, or other Martha's Vineyard Democrats. I want to change my voter party affiliation, but with all the weird stuff going on in Arizona, I do not want to be dropped from voter rolls "by accident."
I personally did not think New York would be in play, as it is a hard ask to get people who voted for her for Senate to then vote against her. Today though, I am thinking that New York has both her loyalists but all the people who see up close the way Wall Street skated off to their homes in the Hamptons after wrecking the economy.I wonder how many of the younger Berniecrats saw parents lose pensions, homes, savings, etc.?
Great catch Steve, glad you wrote this contrast up.
The truth is the gap in enthusiasm between the candidate's is like the walking the Grand Canyon.
Saw that headline at TOP and wanted to barf. Thing is their echo chamber/sand box they play in can't ignore what's going on on the ground all over the country.
Yesterday in the Bronx was the first shot at the bow of the corrupt and craven Dem machine in NY. I was there and it was beyond my wildest imagination (was easier to compile the tweets, etc at TOP last night so I did).

I'm less convinced
I'm not sure that attendance at rallies directly equates to enthusiasm. Hillary supporters seem plenty enthusiastic enough when it comes time to actually vote. I could draw some conclusions from my own behavior. Let's suppose someone was evaluating enthusiasm based on youtube views. Well, I've heard more than plenty to make up my mind about who I want to vote for. So I don't watch debates and most Bernie videos. Yet my enthusiasm for him is MUCH stronger than for any candidate in my life time. He is the first candidate I have ever voted for in a primary and the first I've donated to.
More obviously, if rally enthusiasm was all that mattered then Bernie would be utterly crushing Hillary in the primary and he is not.
A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

" if rally enthusiasm was all
" if rally enthusiasm was all that mattered then Bernie would be utterly crushing Hillary in the primary"
- Independents can't vote in closed primaries. (40% of US voters)
- The DNC has been gaming the primaries and caucuses.
- Election day shennanigans (running out of ballots, 5 hour lines, ...).
- Voter suppression (via registration F-ups)
- Lots of people can't afford 4-5 hours to attend a caucus.
Bottom line, I don't trust the vote numbers to equal enthusiasm to vote. It's all foobar.
Donnie The #ShitHole Douchebag. Fake Friend to the Working Class. Real Asshole.
I'm pretty convinced
though of course rally enthusiasm isn't all that matters, and enthusiasm alone does not win elections either, but actually voting for somebody does also not automatically translate back to enthusiasm.
I think Bernie clearly wins the enthusiasm stakes -- not just the huge rallies while hers are very low for a "historic" candidate. But also his twitter hashtags, which completely outperform hers, and Facebook likes, and articles written in the left wing blogosphere. She definitely has more people enthusiastic than the few who show up at her rallies, but when I listen to people talk, most are not all that excited, but they vote for her because they think she is a) more electable, b) more pragmatic, c) more experienced with foreign policy, etc. They have good reasons for their vote, but they're not buoyed up like most Bernie supporters are. So yeah, enthusiasm isn't required to come out to vote.
I think that rally enthusiasm in this case does express itself in actual votes -- for the most part those people look to me like they're sold on Bernie and not just there to gawk. Why is he not crushing her? He is, in some places. He comes damn close in some others. He totally failed primarily in the South where he did not connect well enough to mostly conservative voters who had barely heard of him, and that's gonna cost in the end. Wherever he is winning, turnout is up, in some states above 2008 (I sure didn't think I'd see that again in my lifetime). In other places, 20,000 extra people going from a rally to the voting booth isn't enough. The vast majority of his current potential constituency is simply not interested enough in politics. Most of the electorate of the US has long since checked out, and is feeling no enthusiasm for anyone.
Her campaign is trying to hit back at every negative
Enthusiasm gap--what gap?
Low polling on honesty and trustworthiness?--a headline from NOW linking Clinton and "trust" in the same sentence without guffaws.
Doesn't matter. There's still an enthusiasm gap, and the candidate still has deep problems with trust and honesty because she flip flops and lies.

About that enthusiasm poll
They polled Wall Street bankers. They are really enthusiastic about Hillary, not so much about Bernie.
Even the smallest person can change the course of the future
washington caucus
I live in rural area in Washington, mostly republican. At Caucus I saw very little enthusiasm by Hillary supporters. Since it was a small group, 16. We all had a chance to say why we were supporting our candidate. ( Did I also mention almost every one was over 60)... Bernie supporters were passionate, spoke about positions, policies, concerns about the future, Hillary supporters talked about her being a woman and one supported her because she was married to Bill. In the end one Hillary supporter switched to Bernie and Bernie won both our delegates.
Well, in Hillary's defense,
Well, in Hillary's defense, it is very difficult to round up more than 300 folks at a time when the entry fee is north of $300,000.00 a head. Life is so difficult.
Sanders 2016!
300 ?
Trump had more than that,
when he paid folks $50
just to attend his 1st Rally
LOL
Same as it was in Tampa
She got 300 to the Ritz hotel (many local pols like Tampa's mayor).
I waited in line for 2.5 hrs. People streamed in for the next 3 hrs.
9000 people total.
The thing you can see at Bernie rally's is how profoundly politics have changed. When Bernie came to the stage easily 4000 people held their
cell phones up to take pictures and video. The rally was all over social media before Bernie ended his speech.
