Outside the Asylum
Standing Aside
Tried to write something analytical about what's happening to us. Can't.
All I've got is this:
I stand aside from all this toxic nonsense.
I will not instigate violent political conflict with any member of the 99% because of their vote, political affiliation, skin color, or country of origin. No matter how stupid, cruel, or destructive I think they're being. I'll consider embracing the philosophy of "by any means necessary" when a leader of the stature and integrity of Malcolm X suggests it to me. I sure as hell won't consider it in response to these motherfuckers--of both parties.
My allegiances are as follows:
I believe in life on this planet. I stand with those who want it to continue.
I believe in telling the truth, by which I mean, as Ursula LeGuin once put it, "Trying hard not to lie." Yes, truth is subjective. That does not mean that there is no such thing as falsehood, including deliberate lying with intent to harm. I stand with those who tell the truth, even when it's hard. I stand with those who oppose falsehood.
Beyond that, my only political loyalty is to the American people, because they are mine. *All* of them, with the exception of certain traitorous members of our elite class, who are clearly manipulating both "sides" of the political "debate" with the aim of setting Americans at each others' throats along partisan and racial lines, and thus ripping the country apart. They love America like I love a good steak. They've got their teeth in us. I can't stop them, but I'm sure as hell not going to play along.
I don't have the heart to go on Twitter and find it, but someone posted there today that several intelligence and natsec operatives said, back in 2016, that the 2020 election would be the election that caused Americans to finally lose all faith in their system. In other words, they are using electoral politics to try to break the American people, by forcing us to make a choice between two monstrosities. Then there's Barack Obama's statement that, if we elect Biden and Harris, we won't have to think about them--or, presumably, the politics they're doing. That's the carrot he's offering: you won't have to think about politics. The carrot reveals exactly what this politics is for: to put the American people to sleep. That's what he's idealizing as a desirable goal. But his statement reveals something else about the current political situation. It amounts to this:
Elect Biden and Harris, and we'll decrease the pain to an amount you can ignore.
Or, in other words, Say uncle.
This is the language of torturers and bullies. It is an opioid politics. The only thing I can do to maintain my allegiances and ethics is to stand aside. It's also the only thing that makes any sense.
Standing aside means that I will not instigate violent conflict with any member of the 99%. I will not retaliate, either, except in immediate self-defense. I will neither start, nor pursue, any verbal political argument with anyone invested in the current partisan electoral system. At best, they are tapping out to make the pain stop, which means they are in no condition for rational argument. At worst, they are genuinely and mistakenly loyal to the worst bunch of treacherous liars I've ever heard tell of.
I'm glad you all are here with me. I'd like, in the days to come, to talk more seriously with you all about providing some kind of backup plan for staying in contact in case things get hairy. I'd hate to lose touch.
Many thanks to JtC for his unselfish work in providing a lifeboat for us.
In 2012, those of us who founded the site had no idea how important that would be. Small as we are, imperfect as we are, this place and the people who post here are a real blessing in my life.
Blessed be to all of you. Stay safe. The politicians involved in this electoral fight--if it is one--aren't worth a single one of your fingernails.

Yes
and I join you in this:

It's important
I wished I were an American like you, because
at least you understand who is who and stands for what.
It is awful to be a dummy among those who participate here on C99p and I start to hate it. Now I think about how cruel, destructive and stupid I am.
But I adapt, I do not care anymore. Unfortunately.

When you stop caring, you start dying
Don't. Please.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
your wish shall be an order for me.
I care a lot, too much, because I have my blood invested over there and 60 percent of my lifetime. How could I not care? I just vented kabuki hot air of frustration with my 'I don't care any more'. My son has 'wasted' his life the last two decades and I leave my comment at this point with a 'no comment'. I am sure you understand.
https://www.euronews.com/live
You are not who I was thinking of, by a long shot.
I'm thinking of members of the 99% who think it's a good and justifiable thing for police officers to murder other members of the 99%, because they have a different skin color.

None of those people is here, as far as I know.
Not here on the site, anyway. Here in my country, yes.

That's what I thought as well
What I thought I was asking is who among the 99% of Americans
does the OP (quoting from his(?) reply to Mimi) actually think believes that
I'd still like to know what the OP means by that. Who/where/how many are the people who believe such a thing?
Well, they wouldn't use the word "murder,"
because they assume that the policeman is automatically right.
As one rather dear young fellow, who I like very much, put it, "If you don't want a police officer to shoot you, do what you're told."
It's really easy to believe that cops who kill black people are always in the right if you believe that authority figures--particularly cops, soldiers, and select right-wing politicians--are always in the right.

And who are they?
When you meet people who believe that--and will tell you so--they are usually white, working-class, Republicans who are often from rural places, particularly in the Midwest and South. That does not mean that being white, working class, Republican, rural, Midwestern, or Southern makes you believe these things. It simply means that when I meet people who believe these things, they usually fall into these demographic categories.

Hmm...
Not sure where (or if) it's possible to draw a distinct line between arguing and rational discussion. Not quite sure what you mean by "invested in" here:
I mean, "the current partisan electoral system" is a significant feature of the societal landscape. And while in important respects it serves to distract from fundamental problems and to create division exploited by the elite to further their control... I can't see where 'stepping aside' leads to any better alternative.
Absent some alternative commitment to engage with others attempt to cooperate in reclaiming some of those badly abused fundamental freedoms, does 'stepping aside' not amount to capitulation to the controllers? Isn't refusal to at least attempt constructive engagement with people of differing views a destructive form of 'othering'?
I can think of a number of politicians, D & R that I believe are sincerely dedicated to preserving what used to be regarded as bedrock principles, like free speech, equality before the law, due process, right to self defense, limited and accountable government... Things that, like air, you don't go around thinking about all the time yet turn out to be critical if there isn't any there.
In the current situation at least some Republicans appear to be willing to try and take on big tech and the deep state and resist being ruled by unaccountable globalist technocrats, Democrats willing to do so seem to be mighty thin on the ground.
Do as you like, of course, but personally I don't feel like handing the controllers a win by default.
Going to go with Tucker on this one:
Apologies, but Tucker Carlson
Gee, I don't know Tucker, maybe almost every Bernie Sanders's speech since 2015 when he declared his run for president? I mean god damn, where the fuck was Tucker when journalists were criticizing Bernie for having too large a crowds? too large of crowds, got it!
Then there's this from Democracy now, where Bernie had the largest campaign rally in 2019 (at least up to that point) Which was just a few days longer than only 1 year ago. OMFG~!
Gee, Tucker, why the fuck did tens of thousands show up for Bernie? Ya know that god damn bleeding-heart-liberal-pinko-commie-bastard? Why would they do that Tucker?
Twice he was sabotaged by the "media elite", who work for the ruling elite and acted on their orders to kill Bernie's campaign. Unfortunately, Bernie didn't have the spine to stand up to them and run 3rd party, and he's settling for incremental change rather than lead political revolution.
Gee, we're going to push Biden left. What a fucking joke!
None of these "media elites" are honest brokers of good information, it's all propaganda.
As far as standing aside, well, I haven't kept my powder dry for nothing...

Good morning, cstms ~
The time is coming for all to come together - to close our divides. This will not come easily but it will come. We must be diligent in speaking our truth and not being complicit in the divide. We must be diligent in our love for one another, our love for ALL THINGS. Without love, we will remain divided.
Enjoy the day!

Good morning...
All I can think of looking at the news this morning is the old story of the pet food company.
And the beat goes on. I'm right with you with the thoughts about this place, and a strict policy of strategic disengagement in meatspace. Meanwhile, we're making sourdough blueberry muffins.
Be well- and keep your heads low, everyone.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
All I know is Howie Hawkins lost.
Actually lost to kind hearted nutjob Willie Wilson who was simultaneously running for President and Senator. Lost both.
At least (last night) Durbin's margin of victory was low. Either that or the Republican votes came in early. Or Chicago magically manufactured some mail in ballots.
We need internet voting software like corporations use for shareholder voting. Changeable up to the last day. Open source with strong open source encryption algorithms and monitored by all watchers from all balloted parties. NO CLOSED SOURCE like Sequoia and Diebold machines use. Use your PC just like corporate elections. Bloch-chain technology may be of use here. And definitely ranked choice voting.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Here in CO,
38,437 folks voted for Stein in 2016 (1.37%). Looks like about 7,500 will have voted for Hawkins this time out when the counting is done. In a year where people were looking for *any* alternative, that is massively disappointing: it shows that the incessant sheepdogging and "lesser-evil" tub thumping took its toll.
The SoS office isn't even showing how many folks wrote in Bruce Lohmiller, the Green candidate for Senator (since the Greens didn't get their stuff together to actually get him on the ballot). At this point, I'll be a beer that he doesn't clear 500 votes, if they ever release the numbers. The Greens have some work to do, for sure.
On edit: looks like Kanye West is going to end up at about 6,500 votes. The Greens have got a *lot* of work to do.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Last I looked, Hawkins was at less than 1%.
And know how I know the Dems don't really care about voter suppression? Because they sued to kick the Greens off the ballot in places.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
jeezum crow;
what a low blow! but never forget that noam chomsky and friends canceled howie and angela in january. their confounded 'open letter' was published damned near everywhere.
and as with AOC, when Lord Chomsky Speaks...people stop to listen. time to retire, noam.
Looks like Biden based on current vote counts
But margins are razor thin in Wisconsin and Michigan. Trump needs both. It depends on where the uncounted votes are. The Cities are Blue, the rural areas are Red. Suburbs Purple.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Only some at Fox seem to have pointed this out,
300,000 ballots have not been processed thru Post Office
How long has it been since we found out DeJoy was f'cking with the post office and why hasn't he been held in contempt yet? Why have dems allowed Trump to appoint acting leaders because he couldn't get them appointed through congressional votes? Why would either party let this stand for so long unless they really don't care that congress does not represent the will of the voters and haven't for 4 plus decades?
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.

Excruciating re-counts and court battles territory. Big surprise there, eh? Well not for anyone who didn't have their heads up their asses.
I wonder if Steve Schmidt and Jeff Weaver are sitting around a toasty fire after setting millions of dollars ablaze by spending their time recruiting GOP Biden voters through their Lincoln Project. I know it sure ain’t warming the bones of the Blue Wave people right about now.

Election Night Doings
I killed off a bottle of a really nice Cab with my neighbor last night who I discovered is a libertarian hoping Trump wins. Made for an interesting evening of discussion while watching Fox News coverage. The wine and the weed helped.
What did you all do election night?
There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. ~ Minnie Aumonier
Well, we
went to bed at about 9pm, listened to some music and read actual paper books for half an hour or so, and then just rolled over and went to sleep. Didn't even turn on the TV or look at news on our ubiquitous devices.
There was no reason to pay attention, given that the rules are made up and the points don't matter. I'm glad that we saved our mental energy up for more productive uses, like separating the seed pods from the cilantro...
On edit: On the other hand, we were surprised and pleased that we were awakened by the alarm clock and not gunfire, so there's that.

So you live in an area
Where that could’ve been an issue? I’m sorry to hear that. Was speaking with some other C99 members last night and they live in Texas where they remarked that if Trump lost, they were planning on staying inside their houses as their neighbors are all well armed.

Celebrating a smaller but important (to me) victory
Arizona passed Prop. 207 to legalize recreational use of cannabis, finally! It passed by a large margin and was called very early so I had that to be happy about regardless of anything else.
I was also pleased to see Martha McSally get her ass handed to her, again. Not that I love Mark Kelly or think that having him in the senate will make a big difference, but I truly loathe McSally. She is a dedicated trump butt-kisser and Gov Ducey appointed her to that seat after she lost the senate race with Sinema, which was just insulting to all Arizona voters. So I was glad to see her go down.
But for me, AZ legalizing weed means that I have now lived to see two things that I never imagined I would see in my life-time: same-sex marriage, and the legal use of a very nice plant that grows out of the ground and should never have been illegal to begin with. Yay progress. As my friend texted me last night, "even if we get stuck with 4 more years of Trump, at least we can get high." rAmen.
Good site for election updates
https://www.huffpost.com/elections
The Rising duo hit the point on this election: Pathetic! I agree. That neither ran on offering us an outlet from this hell hole, but people went all in on them anyway is why we are where we are. When neither party holds their leaders accountable for continually moving the country right then it is no wonder the county keeps moving right as it will even more if Biden does wins, but then pulls an Obama and the working class falls further behind. If you haven't read this yet I recommend that you at least glance at it.
Krystal: "What did Biden say he'd do if he won? He would wear a mask."
Bam! Big middle finger to Washington indeed. And this election is still a mirror on Obama/democrat's actions. If COVID hadn't hit would Trump have won in a landslide? How pathetic that Biden couldn't beat Trump with his record. But then that was why Trump had a snowballs chance in hell to beat Hillary in the 1st place. IMO.

Yep that is why Biden lost. Putin put extra work into this election because Trump is not done handing the country to him. Err.... guess that was how Mitch and Lindsay won their elections. Heavy sigh...I am not ready for another 4 years of Russia Russia Russ.....Or will it be China China/Iran Iran?
Saw this comment on HuffPo this morning:
Democrat's biggest win in our lifetime (2008) was the only time in decades that our Presidential candidate didn't run as a moderate.
Which is just one more reason Trump was able to beat Her.

Viva Zapata
Loved the Saagar bit where he brought up Zapata County, Tejas - in the lower Rio Grande valley, on the border with Mexico, dirt poor, 90% Hispanic..going to Trump 52.5 to 47%.
Of course, since such an outcome is clearly inconceivable according the the prevailing Democratic world view it will, like Trafalgar and Rasmussen polling, be treated as if it doesn't exist...
About standing with those who don't lie
I wholeheartedly agree and wish respectfully to add that I also stand with those, whomever they are who, are doing good work, itself a kind of integrity. I buy my seeds from small independent seed companies, garden tools from The Red Pig and Rogue Hoes, and flour for baking from employee-owned King Arthur Flour--money where my mouth is.
Mary Bennett
a well-written manifesto, amiga.
'standing aside' had caused me to consider what i understand is a maxim of tai chi: to yield in response to one's aggressor's energy, weight (and perhaps emotions), with balance, harmony and seeming effortlessness. the aggressor is said to have lost...at the outset, again, as i understand it.
i like your leGuin quote "Trying hard not to lie.", and not only is truth subjective, but i'd add that my belief is the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves. or as carl jung named it: failing to look inward at our shadow selves'.
i suppose many use various meditation techniques to peer into their darker realms, but a i'm crap at meditation, but am an active dreamer, so i use jungian dream analysis to discover and yes, even gasp at, some of my still-unhealed toxic issues.
[a side note: 3 dozen enormous turkeys just wandered into what we fondly call 'our yard'. mainly Toms, with iridescent blue-green side feathers, enormous tail feathers of various colors and patterns. they're pecking thru the fallen leaves and grasses on the ground...simply a sublime show what with the occasional one ruffling his feathers...although their vocalizations aren't all that musical, lol.]
as to this:
two things spring to mind: i) what do you mean by 'any means necessary'?, and ii) is it necessary and/or practical to wait for such a leader?

at least during Occupy days, i loved discussing the state of the nation's body politic with those who stopped by to...argue. without honking on about it, it seemed like allowing them to vent, then speaking softly to get under their defenses...caused many of our detractors to walk away...nodding their heads as though having had some small epiphany or other.
I don't want to enact political violence on anyone.
However, when Malcolm X said this, he had a point:
That’s our motto. We want freedom by any means necessary. We want justice by any means necessary. We want equality by any means necessary. We don’t feel that in 1964, living in a country that is supposedly based upon freedom, and supposedly the leader of the free world, we don’t think that we should have to sit around and wait for some segregationist congressmen and senators and a President from Texas in Washington, D. C., to make up their minds that our people are due now some degree of civil rights. No, we want it now or we don’t think anybody should have it.
He meant, among other things, that he wasn't going to be a pacifist while the pigs murdered black men and women with impunity.
I see his point, and I'm not a pacifist. I don't know what I would have chosen to do back then. But here's one thing I can say for Malcolm X he genuinely gave a shit about the conditions of life for black people, especially here in this country. He genuinely wanted justice, full citizenship, and a better life for those people. I don't see that honesty or desire for justice in any of the leaders of either political party now. Bernie comes the closest, but you can see what they've done to him. The only place he'll lead us is back to the feet of people like Biden.
I'd follow none of those people into a revolutionary struggle. And I sure as hell won't commit violence at their behest, or because they and their friends in the "press" have decided that uncooperative voters are the problem.

Looks like the Pubs will hold on to the senate
It might end up 50/50 with Kamala being the tie breaking vote in the senate if it comes to that, but with McConnell still being head honcho of it we can look forward to 4 years of stalemates even IF Biden/dems did want to pass good bills. Meanwhile Mitch will continue to appoint Federalist society judges to the federal courts with help from just enough dems to get the deed done. Schumer backed McGrath over Booker and she had a $100 million war chest, but lost to Mitch big time. She went after him for not standing with Trump enough which she promised she would do if she won. Gee...if you're a democrat running against a republican with republican ideas then why should people take the risk of overthrowing the powerful Mitch? Run as republican on the GOP ticket not the dem one. How hard is that?
This is Karma...
Donna Shalala lost her seat in Florida which did not flip blue. Nor did Texas. Arizona did.
In other words the republicans will continue doing whatever they want while democrats tear at their hair and tell us that we let them down by not throwing Mitch out. Yeah blame the voters for your failure. Typical. Hey who blamed Bernie for this? Bueller?

Also good: Collin Peterson (DINO) lost his House seat, at long last. The bad news is Michelle Fishbach (R) won. I didn't like any of the choices for that one so I abstained.
Still voted for Howie. People will still insist on blaming Green voters, but my vote wouldn't have helped Texas or Florida anyway, so they can all pound sand.
