When they learned that the shop’s 80-year-old owner planned to retire and sell the business, they started really looking at the space — 4,500 square feet, cute flower shop below and ample storage space upstairs — and imagining the possibilities. Business ownership started to seem appealing.

“Once we decided to move forward, I said I would be more comfortable if we were a worker-owned cooperative,” Ferguson said. “[Price] researched what that was and realized it was the perfect model for us.”

They are talking about transforming the entire flower industry in California. Less import/export more local decentralized sources. I think that's a good path forward, hope so.

I like the idea...

Hugo Chávez, in his effort to democratize the workforce, established a lot of worker-owned and operated cooperatives the moment he got into office, in 1998. By 2006, there had been 100,000 worker co-ops set up, which represented around 1.5 million workers.

Growers plant Sonoma County’s first legal hemp crop

Lee Martinelli Jr.’s great-grandfather started growing grapes and making wine in the Russian River Valley in the 1880s. These days, the Martinelli clan farms about 500 acres of grapes with a tasting room in a landmark red barn on River Road.

What’s brand new this year are the 1,200 hemp plants, close cousins of marijuana, sprouting from a carefully tilled acre of soil, where they displaced some apple trees.

They’re about a foot tall now, protected by deer fencing and plastic sheeting to stifle weeds. They should hit five feet when harvest time arrives in the fall, accompanied by the same distinctive aroma as cannabis.

Martinelli, a fourth-generation rancher, said he’s comfortable being in the vanguard of nine growers — Santa Rosa Junior College and eight private parties — registered to raise hemp commercially for the first time in Sonoma County.

The USS Constitution in Boston Harbor: More than 120,000 pounds of hemp fiber was needed to rig the 44-gun USS Constitution, America’s oldest Navy ship affectionately called “Old Ironsides.”

Domestic hemp’s dominance in the U.S. took a significant downturn in 1937 when, in an effort to regulate the intoxicating varieties of cannabis, the U.S. government passed the Marijuana Tax Act.

The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 was drafted by Harry Anslinger, an infamous anti-cannabis prohibitionist, who along with various education-exploitation films like Marihuana (1936) and Assassin of Youth (1937), successfully instilled fear of cannabis.

I think Reefer Madness is one of my favorites.

So when did hemp become legal in the U.S.? Only a couple of years ago. The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, signed into law in December of 2018, contained provisions that removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act altogether, radically overhauling America’s relation to hemp and hemp products. The law made it legal for U.S. farmers to grow, process, and sell hemp commercially. It also legalized hemp nationwide for any use, including the extraction of CBD oil.

Watched Mi Amigo Hugo yestidday

@janis b and still digesting it. I both admire and despise Chavez more than before. It's magical thinking to wish for any peaceful revolution that could help poor people share in the wealth, I guess. Mother nature's generous abundance provides enough, and the hoarders wreck it.

If the revolution makes it this far, it has to come through MX to get here. So no wonder all our dear leaders have effectively shut the border doors. Don't be social.

There is no way in hell I'm gonna pick up a gun and shoot somebody, or even carry the ammo so it's over before it starts in my heart. Oh well. All I can do to stop more violence is to not become it myself. That is all.

Mama mia, I want to share all this with my son,

but then I am afraid he would find something in it, which just proves his point and will say, just leave me alone. So, I have to leave him alone, so I don't know anymore, who needs what and how to say what helps, when I see someone wants to and talks to me for hours./EOM

Mrs. Ravioli comes to visit her son Anthony for dinner He lives with a female roommate, Maria.

During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but notice how pretty Anthony's roommate is. And over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Anthony and his roommate than met the eye.

Reading his mom's thoughts, Anthony volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.''

About a week later, Maria came to Anthony saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the silver sugar bowl.

You don't suppose she took it, do you?" ..."Well, I doubt it, but I'll email her, just to be sure."

good morning all

Hope smiley is doing well. Thanks for filling in QMS.

Another rainy one here as the last gasp of Laura sweeps through. According to a nearby airport we've had 26 days of rain this month. Most of them just pm showers, but I've poured out over 5 inches of rain in the last couple of weeks. Not complaining mind you, just shock at this unusual weather for an Alabama August...cool and wet. Calls to mind this poem...

Biophilia:

the desire or tendency to commune with nature, a tree hugger, it's all about love.

Possible benefits of playing outside:

Improved motor skills. ...
Lower body mass index. ...
Improved overall health. ...
Improved muscle strength. ...
Increased openness with parents and caregivers. ...
Greater self-awareness. ...
Appreciation for the environment. ...
Improved peer-to-peer relationships.

OK, so the above list was intended for children or actually for parents who, it appears, need to argue their children into the outdoors. (With time and repetition, said children might learn to love playing outside.)

Seeing how there is a general shortage among all ages of biophilia, we should probably circulate that list far and wide. The oldsters (of which I am one) may benefit as well. The possible improvement in peer-to-peer relationships offers hope.

eyo brought up mamma mia. I've had this in my brain since the dem convention a couple of weeks ago and it won't go away. So I will pass this on. Perhaps it will leave.
