On July 27, 1921, researchers at the University of Toronto, proved that the hormone insulin regulated blood sugar. The original researchers and others, originally reluctant to obtain a commercial patent, agreed to obtain one and transfer it to the University of Toronto for a buck to prevent predatory pharma company Eli Lilly from gaining a patent and gouging for insulin.  This is not why a vial of insulin costing $300 in the US only costs $30 in Canada, however.  That is due to the fact that the US lacks any healthcare system, or, for that matter, anything vaguely resembling healthcare.  Instead, the parasitic corporate-government symbiote running the country has established a for profit fee based medical crisis creation and management model that creates medical crises and then charges exorbitant prices for medical goods and services. Essentially, every aspect of health care, like every other human necessity, is a targeted weakness to be exploited for the purpose of extracting the wealth represented by the work product of the citizenry and transferring it to the oligarchs, usually in the form of periodic rents.

Neil Harbisson (born 27 July 1984) is a Spanish-born British-Irish[18] cyborg artist and activist for transpecies rights based in New York City.[19] He is best known for being the first person in the world with an antenna implanted in his skull[20] and for being legally recognized as a cyborg by a government.[21][22] His antenna sends audible vibrations through his skull to report information to him. This includes measurements of electromagnetic radiation, phone calls, and music, as well as videos or images which are translated into audible vibrations.[23] His WiFi-enabled antenna also allows him to receive signals and data from satellites.

Shit shoveling day here. Need to finish spreading the manure pile. I use a little back scoop on the tractor to transport it to where it is needed and then spread it around the trees and crops.

As to bagpipe day, I'm reminded of the 1st Iraq invasion. It was being televised live. We were gathered on Friday night and had a guest that played bagpipe (interesting fellow that was building an ice road in Antarctica). Just as he was filling the bag up..bwaaa, bwaaa...my buddy's family drove in listening to the Iraq invasion on the radio. As they got out of the car, a jet was flying over and the bagpipe was sounding like an warning and they thought we were having an air raid. "Quick kids into the house!"

Well on to my chores in the morning cool. Have a good one.

form, many resemble your chore of the day, so, on ward. The bagpipe story is funny, but sadly telling about our culture and our so-called civilization. Here we are, living in a country that has never seen or experienced a conventional military attack or bombing run, still instinctively reacting to a perceived one.

I noted your mention of your InstaPot and your sue thereof yesterday nad wan't to talk to you about your usage. I have one, and use it some, but not that often, and want to see if there is a way to get more mileage out of it.

@enhydra lutris

just after finishing up this AM.

As to the instant pot, right now I'm making yogurt in ours. I'm using ultrapasturized milk so I'm making it directly in 4 pint jars using the rack and water up about 3/4 of the jar.

It is time to start processing tomatoes in it this week. First use saute mode for onions, garlic, sometimes peppers, in EVO. After done turn off (cancel). Add to the sauteed onions chopped tomatoes until pot is full. Use pressure and set for 6-8 minutes. After pressure is done, ladle hot sauce into clean jars (lids will seal as the jars cool) or freezer containers. When we use jars we first pressure cook them for 4-5 min on the rack with water to the bottom of the jars.

We buy local beef short ribs. Use rack and enough water to reach the top of the rack. Add ribs standing vertically on the rack (leaning on the sides of the pot). I like to put a chili powder based rub on them. Set for pressure 30 minutes/lb. Falls off the bone tender. I use a homemade no sugar bbq sauce.

Pour dried beans and water or stock (salt?) in the pot. Set pressure for 30-35 min per lb. Beans in less than an hour.

There's a few examples of how versatile it is.

There's tons of recipes for them out on the innertubes. Good luck.

pretty much only use it for making shredded pork, chicken or beef, or else beans or large quantities of rice, or stock and not too much everyday cooking.

@Azazello

there's still that bond, specifically, James Bond. There is a shared craziness in the US-UK that is seemingly more extreme than in the mainland/continental European part of NATO. Not ssure what drives it, it would be nice to hear Eddie Izzard discuss the matter.

Hilariously enough, that first permanent transatlantic cable ran from Nova Scotia (Canada) to Valentia Island (Irish Republic) and thereby, at the time, linked the UK with itself.

Thanks for the Greenwald tweet.

It’s already noon and I’m still in my pajamas! Been watching movies on Hulu and eating left overs from the brunch I hosted yesterday in the garden. Fresh orange juice for my mimosa and a mushroom, onion and bacon omelette paired with freshly baked rolls topped with melted havarti dill cheese.

Yummy-liscious!

But here’s the conundrum: Now that I’ve eaten such a rich meal and had a few mimosas, I think I’m ready for a nap!

drunk the victim is. As a one time beach rat, I can assure you that drunken aquatics were not a complete rarity. Now, if one were in the "beyond staggering" stage, probably one would also be past swimming too, but prior to that, it is actually helpful that water is much more bouyant than air. Not that I'd recommend it.

Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Put him in a long boat 'til he's sober
Stick him in the scupper with a hosepipe on him

Chardonnay wins North Coast Wine Challenge

A classic chardonnay, grown with care by a longtime Sonoma County family in two cool-climate vineyards during an ideal growing season, took home the top prize in the 2020 North Coast Wine Competition last week.

It was a serendipitous collaboration between experienced vineyardists working in a perfect climate and a talented winemaker with a deep love of the varietal. Together, those forces pushed the 2018 white wine past a 2017 Russian River Valley pinot noir to become only the second chardonnay in the contest’s history to take home the top prize of Best of the Best.

See the full list of more than 300 wines that won gold medals at the 2020 North Coast Wine Challenge here.

Dog Busko is what I used to call the genius idiot who ruled here for decades, he now co-owns all of the media of course. Of course! Doug Bosco. That dog was a busker if you ask me, but nobody does. Nobody. heh

Since it launched in 2013 under the sponsorship of The Press Democrat, the North Coast Wine Challenge has awarded its top accolade to one Bordeaux blend, three pinot noirs, two chardonnays, one rosé of pinot noir and last year, for the first time, an old vine zinfandel. The contest only accepts wines grown in the six North Coast counties of Lake, Mendocino, Marin, Napa and Sonoma and parts of Solano.

Slipped right by, the day did.

Saw this this morning and found it very disturbing. Thoughts?

The birth of a militia: how an armed group polices Black Lives Matter protests
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/27/utah-militia-armed-group...

The Utah Citizens’ Alarm is only a month old, and yet it already boasts 15,000-plus members.

The citizen militia’s recruits wear military fatigues and carry assault rifles. Their short-term goal, they say, is to act as a physical presence of intimidation to deter protesters from becoming violent and destroying the state of Utah. Their long-term goal: to arm and prepare the state of Utah against underground movements they believe will incite civil war. ...
“I was like, ‘We need to stand together as citizens and go down there and show these people that we’re not going to allow violence, and that we are not going to allow these anarchist violent groups to tear down Provo,” Robertson told the Guardian. “It’s not going to happen without a fight.’” ...

Utah Citizens’ Alarm is now organized into a pseudo-militia under the guidance of ex-military and ex-law enforcement on their newly formed board of advisers. They want Utah to be fully prepared for the “civil war” instigated by underground, militant forces.

The group trains tirelessly. When on site, members are advised to move in groups of three and no less, because they have been told by informants on the inside that antifa attacks single out the strongest members in vulnerable situations. They have escape plans at every site, and promote a firm obedience to the local police, including when asked by them not to come to a protest.

Thanks for the ot and for all you do. Take good care and have a good one.

Edit: Thanks, because now I know of the Dick Act. Perfect.

California State Militia

The "unorganized" or reserve militia is a legal and lawful part of the armed forces of this nation. It is a military organization recognized by the Second Amendment of the Constitution; Title 10 Section 311 USC; The Dick Act of 1903; The National Defense Act of 1916; and affirmed by numerous court decisions. There is no ambiguity, the "unorganized" citizens militia is not the National Guard or the state "select" militia under the governor, or part of the "organized" armed forces of the federal government. It is literally the entire body of the armed citizenry.
