The US' Global Status in one Headline
Remember when "Leader of the Free World" invariably meant the US President; even clowns and dolts like GWB? Dig This:
The Leader of the Free World Gives a Speech, and She Nails It
Uh huh, you got that, New York Magazine Intelligencer Mar. 18, 2020, By Justin Davidson@JDavidsonNYC; article about Angela Merkel's speech, the speech mimi posted to the Evening Blues the other night. LINK: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/angela-merkel-nails-coronavirus-...
USians and their great orange buffoon have been deservedly demoted. Let us hope that it stays that way, that there is always somebody on the world stage deemed more worthy of that honorific than whatever neoliberal or worse scoundrel occupies the oval office until we someday get somebody who merits said sobriquet.
That's all I got, but, this is the headline of them all for sociologists worldwide to note and ponder.
Edited to include link, sorry, and thanks to mhagle for pointing out the omission.

A demotion well earned, I must say, heh. n/t

Hola mhagle. Sorry about that, I edited the article to include
it, so thanks for pointing that out. I actually copied it to my clipboard than then forgot to paste it into my post.

We've come so far...

To quote an Aussie friend,
“Who the fuck appointed the fucking US president to be the leader of the free world? Fuck him and all the morons who spout such nonsense!” I seem to remember a continuing commentary that W would fuck up a one car funeral and couldn’t lead a piss up on St. Patty’s Day in Dublin.
Yes, W occupied the Whitehouse at the time. I haven’t talked to my old friend in a long time but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t changed his mind one little bit. It’s funny, not the haha kind, how when you think Americans have reached bottom, we keep digging. Put down the shovel for fuck’s sake people.
"Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now..."
Afternoon, vtcc, well put.

One answer: Kissinger
who created the "world's poiliceman" fraud, and who was
Her Heinous' best Thanksgiving Dinner friend for decades.
When my son was struggling with life
he was depressed because he thought he reached rock bottom. Mr. RA flatly told him that when he thought he reached the bottom, look out because you can always go lower. My son went lower. He's good now - those lessons built his character. Can't say the same for Americans, however - will this finally build some character in our dysfunctional American society? Time will tell,
"The “jumpers” reminded us that one day we will all face only one choice and that is how we will die, not how we will live." Chris Hedges on 9/11
Whew
For a minute there, I thought this was going to be article about Her Heinous. Thought some smart-ass Wall Street opinion page was trying (again) to prop up the Hillster, by noting what SHE would do if she were President during this crisis.
Well done is better than well said-Ben Franklin
Hola longtall. I think it is clear even to those clowns that
she isn't even arguably the leader of the Dems anymore, let alone anything more.

*Merkel* is the leader of the free world?
I'd probably have picked julian assange, or chelsea manning, or maybe evo morales...

Depends on the definition of "leader"
which seems to be "person in office at the head of a major government that ISN'T Russia or China".
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Well, as Maven notes, it has always been a political term
of art, it was, for example, LBJ, not MLK.

There is no free world and there is no leader
there is only the virus and the fear and those mis-fits that try to make a profit out of both and do everything to lie convincingly. The mis-fits won't win, the virus will take care of them the same way the virus takes care of all the people.
My two peanuts worth.

The greater point made is that with our elections stolen
America is no longer part of the "free world". Personally, I think we haven't had a real election since Reagan and his October Surprise, but now we have exit poll evidence that we've lost our freedom.

It only seems that way because of circumstances, Battle.
There is finally one of those very rare candidates who just might upset the apple cart and work to implement social and economic justice at the expense of the elites, and hence the knives come out and open cheating is on display. In other years there was still no semblance of "democracy" because things were manipulated and arranged so that one was given the choice between oligarch a and oligarch b, with no real meaningful difference between them and where it was an open and established fact that "campaign promise" was a synonym for "complete bullshit." It was an open truth that we had two wings of the one big corporatist party. Even then there was cheating and manipulation, but it was more on-the-sly and down low.
have a good one.
