Bernie Sanders for President:

FDR's Four Freedoms:

Freedom of speech.
Freedom of worship.
Freedom from want.
Freedom from fear.

Bernie Sanders four tenants:
A Green New Deal
College for All
Jobs for All
A $15.00 an hour minimum wage

I like having a Democrat running for office who reminds me of the old days of FDR, LBJ and JFK.

Remember when the Democratic Party was run by Democrats?

@mimi
FDR's Four Freedoms eventually became part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 through the work of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Here's what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says about the freedom from want, in Article 25 (1):

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

@Centaurea
that. Great to learn about Arricle 25 (1).

Thinking about it ... there are lots of things that are requested/demanded in there, which haven't been achieved or defended yet. I would say at least ...

he right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

... 80 percent is not fullfilled in the life and work conditions of ... most workers.

@Centaurea

You can have.

FDR was only as liberal as he appeared to be because he wanted to save the elite from revolution and because he was being pressured on social welfare issues by Huey Long - until Long was conveniently assassinated and removed as a potential opponent to FDR's re-election. Some good and enduring stuff did come out of the CCC and WPA, though (not that black Americans could participate).

LBJ was thoroughly corrupt and racist to the core, if he wasn't outright involved in JFK's assassination, he sure moved quickly enough to reverse his policies on Vietnam, sound currency, dialogue with the Soviet Union, etc.

As for Kennedy, Tulsi Gabbard's "Service Before Self" slogan resonates a *lot* more with “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” than what I hear from Bernie.

Although compared with Killary, Algore, Kerry and the like, he at least livens things up and traumatizes the Dem establishment...

who make a compromise to vote for Sanders, ONLY to vote for Sanders, IF Tulsi gets into his potential cabinet or be chosen as his VP.

I think lots of Veterans start to have second thoughts and silently would like to support Gabbard. Bernie needs to be pushed to realize that and make adjustments himself and compromize with Gabbard.

The only woman standing ....that demands respect and kudos and adjustments from the side of Sanders, imo.

@Blue Republic @Blue Republic @Blue Republic My father worked in the CCC and he mentioned Black Americans he worked with when he was being interviewed by a guy writing a book on the CCC.They had "Colored' Camps but sometimes 'Colored' people got mixed into other camps for various reasons, usually out of necessity. It was not long before my father died so it's too bad the interview didn't happen years earlier but he still told some good stories about it, and I have the transcript.

The following is not from the transcript but third on this list goes with one story he told about everyone having to send some of their pay home, my father was sending six dollars a month home. It was on the agreement that everyone signed that they had to write home and send money each month.
He said all kinds of people with different backgrounds worked with the CCC and my father, being a farmer,having to show people from the Cities what a 'cattle guard' was, how to string fence, and how to do a lot of jobs that were common tasks to anyone that grew up on a farm, but he met a lot of people that had only worked desk jobs, so the hard labor was sometimes too tough for a few.

Approximately:
"250,000 — colored youth have served in the corps since President Roosevelt and the Congress initiated the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933. Regular habits of work, training, discipline, fresh air and three well prepared and ample meals a day have combined to improve the health and morale of all enrollees. The gain in weight has ranged from seven to fifteen pounds for each boy."

Check out the whole list but here are a few things you may find both interesting and unexpected.

"900 — classes in Negro history were conducted in the camps during the past five years. National Negro Health exhibits have been shown for five consecutive years in cooperation with the U. S. Health Service"
"90,000 — books have been supplied through the War Department and the Office of Education for colored camp libraries."

"...Eleven thousand colored enrollees who were illiterate have been taught to read and write in classes offered by the CCC camps. There are today 147 colored men serving the CCC camps as education advisers. Most of the educational work is carried on at camp. Arrangements are often made, however, for enrollees to take additional school work in public school evening classes in nearby cities. The camp educational programs offer instruction in carpentry, shorthand, tying, forestry, auto mechanics, landscaping and numerous other vocational subjects. While attendance at classes is voluntary, approximately ninety per cent of the colored enrollees attend." (my bold)

@aliasalias

I was not just a little wrong on that one.

Thanks for catching that and for the history.

People are still using New Deal infrastructure today, although few of them are aware of it, I expect.

My parents owned (and, lamentably sold) a house in central Oregon built by the WPA as housing for the local US Forest Service District Ranger or Forest Supervisor - amazing quality of materials and workmanship. And not even included (but strongly resembles several buildings) in this extensive listing of New Deal projects.

Good job on doing the oral history thing with your father. My mother, her older sister and their aunt recorded some, but I never did with my father and now regret that, of course.

Thanks again for the correction/heads up!

@Blue Republic @Blue Republic Too few people know how many bridges they've crossed, how many dams they've seen, how many roadside parks and National Parks that they've used are a product of the CCC.

Imagine the govt. hiring people all over the Country to do this...

"At work sites, the Agriculture and Interior departments – custodians of U.S. public lands – were in charge. CCC members planted 3 billion trees, earning the nickname “Roosevelt’s tree army.” This work revitalized U.S. national forests and created shelter belts across the Great Plains to reduce the risk of dust storms. The corps also surveyed and treated forests to control insect pests and created forest fire prevention systems. Over its decade of operation, 42 enrollees and five supervisors died fighting forest fires.

Corps members created and landscaped 711 state parks, and built lodges and hiking trails in dozens of national parks and monument areas. Many of these facilities are still in use today. Attractions including the Grand Canyon, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and Civil War battlefields at Gettysburg and Shiloh bear signatures of CCC work."

Here is another fact I never heard of...
"...Eleanor Roosevelt convinced her husband to let her and Labor Secretary Frances Perkins organize a smaller network of “She-She-She” camps for jobless women..."
"The corps established operations in all 48 states and the territories of Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, as well as a separate American Indian division."

https://treesource.org/news/lands/ccc-tree-planting/

Imagine President Sanders getting people jobs working on 'greening' our infrastructure everywhere the CCC operated.

One last question the guy interviewing my father asked was what he said he asked of every person he interviewed for his book... "What to you think would've happened if FDR hadn't implemented the CCC or WPA?
My father was quiet then finally said "I don't know because there was nothing else" His voice stressed the words "nothing else" as emphatically as he could at the time.
The interviewer said that was basically the same answer he got from all the other people he'd interviewed.

How true, there was no social safety net like Social Security (first lump sum payment in 1937, no monthly payments until 1940), Unemployment insurance, Medicaid, Medicare (LBJ's work) and like the others my father qualified to work with the CCC because he was "on Relief"

the media is covering it up. Since I don't tweet, here's an article from the dreaded Red State but you need to read it because Biden said we have to re-elect Herr Drumpf. He's losing it!

@k9disc to admit I ever was a Democrat.

If that isn't the very definition of pure, deadly, poison politics, I don't know what is.

I love Bernie, have for years, but don't think he can succeed if he stays focused on just having Democrats voting for him. Real success works by also gaining support from disaffected Republicans who might otherwise see Bernie as closely tied to the corrupt Democrats. Without that support, Trump likely wins in head to head competition.

The key action for Bernie to take at this time is to stand up for Tulsi and work towards her inclusion in the upcoming debate. Trump supporters, many of whom are leaning toward Bernie or Tulsi, are well aware of the corruption associated with the debate 'rules' and could very well be swayed to support Bernie if he takes an appropriate stance. The stance of many true progressives would likely be impacted as well.

Fairness in elections is the existential issue and without standing up for Tulsi I fear that Bernie's movement will collapse for failing to take needed action. I have written Bernie's campaign concerning this problem and hope that you can too.
