@Blue Republic @Blue Republic @Blue Republic My father worked in the CCC and he mentioned Black Americans he worked with when he was being interviewed by a guy writing a book on the CCC.They had "Colored' Camps but sometimes 'Colored' people got mixed into other camps for various reasons, usually out of necessity. It was not long before my father died so it's too bad the interview didn't happen years earlier but he still told some good stories about it, and I have the transcript.

The following is not from the transcript but third on this list goes with one story he told about everyone having to send some of their pay home, my father was sending six dollars a month home. It was on the agreement that everyone signed that they had to write home and send money each month.
He said all kinds of people with different backgrounds worked with the CCC and my father, being a farmer,having to show people from the Cities what a 'cattle guard' was, how to string fence, and how to do a lot of jobs that were common tasks to anyone that grew up on a farm, but he met a lot of people that had only worked desk jobs, so the hard labor was sometimes too tough for a few.

Approximately:
"250,000 — colored youth have served in the corps since President Roosevelt and the Congress initiated the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933. Regular habits of work, training, discipline, fresh air and three well prepared and ample meals a day have combined to improve the health and morale of all enrollees. The gain in weight has ranged from seven to fifteen pounds for each boy."

"900 — classes in Negro history were conducted in the camps during the past five years. National Negro Health exhibits have been shown for five consecutive years in cooperation with the U. S. Health Service"
"90,000 — books have been supplied through the War Department and the Office of Education for colored camp libraries."

"...Eleven thousand colored enrollees who were illiterate have been taught to read and write in classes offered by the CCC camps. There are today 147 colored men serving the CCC camps as education advisers. Most of the educational work is carried on at camp. Arrangements are often made, however, for enrollees to take additional school work in public school evening classes in nearby cities. The camp educational programs offer instruction in carpentry, shorthand, tying, forestry, auto mechanics, landscaping and numerous other vocational subjects. While attendance at classes is voluntary, approximately ninety per cent of the colored enrollees attend." (my bold)

FDR was only as liberal as he appeared to be because he wanted to save the elite from revolution and because he was being pressured on social welfare issues by Huey Long - until Long was conveniently assassinated and removed as a potential opponent to FDR's re-election. Some good and enduring stuff did come out of the CCC and WPA, though (not that black Americans could participate).

LBJ was thoroughly corrupt and racist to the core, if he wasn't outright involved in JFK's assassination, he sure moved quickly enough to reverse his policies on Vietnam, sound currency, dialogue with the Soviet Union, etc.

As for Kennedy, Tulsi Gabbard's "Service Before Self" slogan resonates a *lot* more with “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” than what I hear from Bernie.

Although compared with Killary, Algore, Kerry and the like, he at least livens things up and traumatizes the Dem establishment...
