Winning, Ideology, Truth

Hi all, this is my first entry, so be nice on Easter. Smile

I am struck by this off-spun community, first. I was responding to a post regarding the 2008 debacle (PUMA, MyDD, et al), when I decided I had enough material to write a simple post, to make a simple point.

My brother somehow became a radical right winger. My example is that he believes that a poll tax is necessary to preserve the middle class to keep the poors from continually voting themselves welfare, basically. Many years ago I had detected his predilection toward right wing thought when he basically told me that he joined that "side". And, he carefully explained to me, I paraphrase, "when you're a Mets fan (we are both New Yorkers by birth), and the Met player on first steals second base, and the catcher throws, and the second baseman makes the tag, and the umpire rules him out, you disagree with him. Because you're a Mets fan."

I have forever disagreed with him over that, because to me that is cheating. It is immoral to cheat. Now, my father taught me that. the same one as him (Long Island Catholic Irish, six kids, totally committed and exhausted parents lol).

So I wonder, perhaps it's been pondered occasionally in the past...

Now, Keith Hernandez wrote a book in which he noted how well-respected Gil Hodges, my hero manager of the Mets in the sixties, was. He was especially praised for his honesty. Keith wrote that he cashed it all in one day by putting shoe polish on a ball thrown into the dugout to prove that the pitch hit the batter. So it pays to be honest, eh Keith?

We all want to win, we all want all of us to win.

That would be a win-win.

Hernandez wasn't there. I remember the game.

IIRC, he wrote it as hearsay, clubhouse legend. I don't remember the incident, but I was there in Shea when they clinched the NL East pennant in 1969. Wink

Unfortunately, sometimes even umpires see what they want to see. "There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know." (Thomas Chalkley, 1713)
