AOC just spat in the eyes of the DCCC

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had quite a week.
She "compared wealthy business owners and CEOs to slaveowners".
She said "The Democratic Party is not a left party."

But by far the biggest thing AOC did involved NOT doing something.

Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended her decision not to donate money to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in protest of a policy to "blacklist" organizations that back Democratic candidates running against incumbents.

"I give quite a bit to fellow Dems - we’ve fundraised over $300,000 for others (more than my 'dues'), w/ over 50% going to swing seats," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Friday.

"DCCC made clear that they will blacklist any org that helps progressive candidates like me," she said. "I can choose not to fund that kind of exclusion."

The New York congresswoman was reacting to an article by Fox News, which reported that some fellow House Democrats were upset with her decision not to pay the $250,000 dues. It also noted that there were 97 Democrats who hadn't paid as of records from October, but that more may have paid up before the end of the year.

This would be significant, but not really a headline, if she stopped there.
But AOC dialed up this defiance of the Party to 11.

For bucking a key arm of the Democratic Party establishment that has stood in the way of attracting and supporting progressive candidates, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) received applause over the weekend after she announced the launch of a new political action committee designed to directly challenge the power of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee by helping insurgent, left-leaning challengers like herself take on both Republican incumbents and centrist Democrats.

“The rumors are true,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Saturday. “Today we’re announcing the Courage to Change PAC — and we need your help. We are pushing the envelope in D.C. by rewarding those who reject lobbyist money, fight for working families, and welcome newcomers.”

The Washington Post reported Sunday afternoon that Courage to Change had raised more than $150,000 after approximately 24 hours of fundraising, money that would go directly to help progressive House candidates in the 2020 primaries and general election.

The demonratic party will do all in their power to make her go away. I wouldn't be surprised if her distric is redrawn so as to handicap her.

Moving her into a different district would pit her against another incumbent Democrat, and that Democrat has an incentive to avoid that race. ”Maybe some people wouldn’t want trouble for themselves,” she noted.

Another reason not to target Ocasio-Cortez would be Chuck Schumer. The Democratic Senate minority leader, and a major player in New York politics, is up for re-election in 2022. The commission redrawing the lines may be technically independent, but Schumer’s power is no secret. If Ocasio-Cortez were gerrymandered out of the House, she’d need something new to do — and primarying Schumer would be an obvious option on the table. That could make Schumer Ocasio-Cortez’s strongest advocate at the redistricting negotiating table.

I gave a donation to Courage to Change when I was asked. This Democratic Party isn't my party. Clinton and his ilk killed that years ago. I'm all for revitalizing the party and it seems it is young women who are doing most of the heavy lifting. From what I can see that will be an advantage. The ones like Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and Tlaib are savvy and courageous. Seems only reasonable for women to finally assert themselves now as the suffragettes did in the 19th century and as women did in the early 20th century with the 19th Amendment. It's been far too long in coming. Maybe actual equality is coming and, as so often happens in human affairs, even overshooting its original goal. Women certainly have a low bar to clear to excel men in the political arena.

The young part debatable, but solidly true without the age specification.

"Young women" is a relative term. I forget that this term means different ages to different people. At 84 my definition of "young" is far different from someone in their30's or40's. I'll be more careful in the future. I hope this mistake is the worst one I make for awhile.

The second-largest doctors group in the United States is endorsing "Medicare for All" as well as a public option as possible routes for achieving the goal of universal coverage.

The endorsement of Medicare for All from the large doctors group, the American College of Physicians, is notable because much of the rest of the health care industry has expressed opposition to the idea, including the largest doctors group, the American Medical Association.

The American College of Physicians (ACP), which represents internal medicine doctors that often serve as a patient’s primary care physician, is known as more liberal than other groups, including speaking out forcefully against the repeal of ObamaCare.

Still, the group's backing of Medicare for All, issued Monday night, is a crack in industry opposition.

For instance, one of the NNU’s primary interests lies in Sanders’ pledge to enact Medicare for All. According to Sanders, the Medicare for All plan would establish a single-payer national health insurance program that would not cost patients receiving health care services, along with no copays or deductibles and an annual cap of $200 on medication costs.

“We are so proud that together, in 2016, Bernie Sanders and NNU elevated Medicare for All to the national mainstream, where it has advanced to a top 2020 presidential race issue,” said NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo, RN, in a press release. “Nurses are beyond tired of watching our patients suffer and die needlessly, simply due to inability to pay, and we know Bernie Sanders is and has been, leading on Medicare for All through his advocacy and Senate legislation.”

AOC's observation about the democratic party is correct. And we are talking base, not just party leadership.

While democrats may poll in favor of progressive policies, the base does not vote for candidates who favor those policies. I call it "polling left, voting right". If the democratic convention goes into the second round, we will see all of those elected officials who are super delegates certainly NOT vote for Bernie. And in the next election cycle, for the most part they will win re-election. And I am talking about super delegates from very liberal states like Oregon and CA.

Hopefully the value of Bernie and AOC is that they get ensconced in the core of the party policies like M4A.

The difference is that liberals are associated with Identity Politics.
No one outside of white, upper-middle class liberals likes IDPol.
