It looks like “Middle Class” Joe has perfected the art of taking big contributions, then representing his corporate donors at the cost of middle- and working-class Americans. Converting campaign contributions into legislative favors and policy positions isn’t being “moderate”. It is the kind of transactional politics Americans have come to loathe.
There are three clear examples.
First, Biden’s support for finance over working-class Americans. His career was bankrolled by the credit card industry. He delivered for it by spearheading a bankruptcy bill that made it harder for Americans to reduce their debts and helped cause the financial crisis. He not only authored and voted for that bill, he split with Barack Obama and led the battle to vote down Democratic amendments.His explanations for carrying water for the credit card industry have changed over time. They have never rung true.
The simplest explanation is the most likely: he did it for his donors. At a fundraiser last year, Biden promised his Wall Street donors that “nothing would fundamentally change” for them if he became president. Now the financial world is raising huge money for his campaign. It clearly thinks he’s going to be its friend if elected. Most Americans, who get ripped off by the financial sector on a daily basis, aren’t looking for a candidate who has made their life harder.

This is Karl Rove politics. There is no way to avoid the hatchet jobs. The best way to weather them is never to say anything you aren't willing to stand by forever, regardless of the attacks of the powerful, never to lie, and never to break with an ally who is being honest and consistent.
Bernie's pretty great at the first two. He just failed at the third.
Teachout was being honest and consistent. Her article is based on fact. Bernie's rebuttal of her is not based on fact. It's based on manners, which in this case must be based on fear of what people will say about him and his campaign. Or maybe, if I'm gonna give him the utmost benefit of the doubt, fear of hurting Joe Biden as a person, because he likes him. Neither of these motivations makes Bernie's non-factual protection of Biden a politically good move. And if Bernie thinks that doing this is going to get Biden or the establishment to stop doing character assassinations upon him, he's plain wrong.

Why is it just Bernie who has to play nice when other candidates don't? And why the hell should he have to tell people supporting him to be nice to other candidates and their supporters? Who decided that a person who has millions of supporters is responsible for every damn thing they say? Neera Turner is stoking the crap on Twitter every day hour after hour yet in the next tweets she asks for unity. So it's okay for the head of Hillary's CAP organization to stir the shiite, but it's not okay for others to stand up for their candidate?
I think this was a weak move on Bernie's part and I really question why he did it. He could have said that Teachout is entitled to her opinion and leave it at that. Besides nothing she said war wrong. Biden is as corrupt as any one in congress. The stuff that is coming out from what he did in Ukraine shows that. Unfortunately Biden wasn't the only one that did it. Both parties play fast and loose with money. If it happened in Ukraine I am betting it happened elsewhere.

of redefining basic civility as "don't say anything we don't like, whether it's true or not" is problematic. And that's what they're trying to sell, even more than the idea that Bernie is bad.
Interesting that we're not supposed to #BelieveTeachout, but, oh well. I never #Believed that any of those hashtags were anything other than a hypocritical psy op anyway. The fact that honest ordinary people got sucked into them and told true stories didn't change who designed the things or who was ultimately steering the conversations engendered by them. They probably couldn't have continued to control those conversations as more and more ordinary women got involved in them, without the press, whose main job these days seems to be keeping Americans from getting into the wrong sort of talks with each other.

Bernie's apology gives the Teachout comment vastly more exposure and appears to show him to be a stand up guy.
Yes to the first, and no to the second.
The good side of what Bernie did is that it spreads Teachout's message and allows Bernie to say the words "Biden" and "corrupt" together over and over.
But it does not make him look like a stand-up guy. It makes him look weak, like a leader who doesn't have control of his troops. It also makes him look weak like a guy who has been forced to back down and grovel before an opponent.
It implicitly concedes the point that Bernie ought to be able to control what his supporters say about other candidates. That idea contains many loathsome subsets. Think about it.
It also implicitly concedes that there's something wrong with calling candidates corrupt. Some candidates.

Biden was calling for Bernie to back down on his social security claims. Not only has Bernie refused to grovel, but he has amped up his attack with the new 30 second attack ad on the issue against Biden that now is being unleashed in Iowa and the early primary and caucus states.
I think the apology wasn't that big a thing. The article is still featured in the Guardian (now along with the response piece to Hillary's broadsides from her former surrogates Peter and Leela Daou). My guess is that Sirota's newspaper connections got both articles in The Guardian. Teachout still has her say (good for her!) in a big international publication and Bernie looks like he's concerned about unity in the party and not simply being a maverick who wants to destroy the party's chances of beating Trump in November. Win-win all around. I mean the target thay are painting on Bernie's back is based on him being divisive and hurting the party and helping Trump. The bleating about Bernie being a Putin agent is also ramping up slowly but surely.
The apology is already yesterday's news and nobody is going on about it except lefties on online discussion forums. The MSM is focused on impeachment and will be for awhile. I don't think it's a bad thing to discuss the effectiveness of this or that strategy and tactic, though.
BTW, I'm expecting Obama to attack Bernie before the CNN town hall forums with the individual candidates next week. Maybe not. Maybe he'll wait till before Super Tuesday and time it based on teh results of the four early primaries/caucuses. Time sure flies.

I've just started making a rough 5 year plan to move out west because I have family out there, and since I've been disabled for most of my adult life and don't travel particularly well due to that, I'd like to be closer to them. Are places like Yakima or Spokane any more livable? I've heard they're both more rural and conservative but I've never had trouble in those social environments even though I came up a city-rat wiseass leftist.

Yakima is far enough away from the Tri-Cities and close enough to Ellensburg to be reasonably livable. Spokane is my favorite location in the Inland Empire / Scablands even as it is growing into a megalopolis conjoined with Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

the place so beautiful they named it twice …
As I was growing up my dad and I would drive through that part of Washington often. Walla Walla is a rural but connected with Milton-Freewater to make a reasonable sized population center. From your self-description you would be familiar with what it would be like living there. The college enhances its desirability in the usual ill-defined ways of all college towns. It was and, I think, still is in the middle of Apple Country writ large (id est known far and wide).
In the 1968-70 school year I and a few guys drove from Pendleton, OR (BMCC) to play chess with students at Whitman College. It was only later that I internalizes the significance of the Whitmans and their "Mission" to the area.
Having grown up (poor) in the area I have no desire to live in that part of the Pacific Northwest, but I hope to visit this area often during whatever time I have left on Earth.

The Land of Enchantment is not just hype
Northern New Mexico. The COL is low except for a few hot spots. Overall it's a fairly Blue state though fairly poor. Scenery in places is similar to Utah plus southern CO is very close. NW NM is close to Utah, by Western driving standards. We've got a woman governor who seems to be heading things in the right direction unlike the horrid GOPer woman who preceeded her.
I think Utah will eventually move left. The population is fairly forward looking in many things. Maybe if a new federal voting rights law is passed that ends gerrymandering then the urban areas will get their fair share of government rather than remaining under the thumb of the rural reactionaries. At that point the Church will go with the flow as it can be very pragmatic when it wants, or has, to be.

Check out the Bear Creek Valley along I-5 thirty or so miles north of California. This is deep south county with far too many goobers, hicks, and some Mormons.
But, there are some positives.
It is possible to not get in over your head (financially that is) if you plan carefully. There is a good sized OLLI community here, and a core of real progressives (small in number and as tenacious as me) that can, I hope, create real change.
Long story, short version: I still have hope I can be involved in the kind of changes here as I was involved with in Nebraska.

. . . and Sirota knows what he's doing. I notice that Bernie hasn't apologized for Sirota who has been relentlessly blistering in his attacks on Biden.
Sirota is in Bernie's employ. Teachout isn't.
Don't be so sure that this wasn't played out and coordinated by Sirota/Bernie. I wouldn't be the least surprised if Teachout knew what to expect all along, too.

In the US even the truth can backfire. It may be wise to have someone outside of the campaign do the try out. I all of a sudden had a thought that this might have been going on in the political world for a longer time....in some ways it's what RWNutjob media does.
Sirota has merely
been showing the record, calling out Biden in the DP area, just as Bernie has called out Biden for his Iraq vote. If Bernie starts apologizing for Sirota's efforts, then we'll know for sure Bernie has chosen the Neville Chamberlain-Mike Dukakis road to capitulation and defeat.
And, no, I don't think this was some carefully coordinated 11-D Chess effort by Sanders/Teachout. This is the Obama Apologist method of excusing displays of weakness by one's favored pol. Perhaps that sounds a bit harsh, but if we rightly mock these things re Obama, we shouldn't be shy about calling it plain when it involves Bernie.
This one was an unnecessary overreaction to tough but true comments by a supporter, not someone part of the official campaign. Or, if not actual corruption by Biden, it certainly has the appearance of same. If Teachout were actually on the Bernie campaign, I could understand. But Bernie should not put himself in a position where he is apologizing for what his supporters say. That seems like opening the door to many apologies in the future.
I don't like this one, and it doesn't bode well for the general if Bernie somehow manages to overcome Biden. Will he treat the Don with similar kid gloves? "I respect the President. We just disagree on some issues"?
Long ago I got fed up with Dems always apologizing for using tough but fair language in a campaign context. It's still the Miss Manners Party, and Bernie seems comfortable with that.

The point is that he hasn't criticized or apologized for Sirota who got the Teachout piece from the Guardian out there even more through the Bern Notice which I can still read in my email mailbox even if it has been deleted from the online version. Sirota's been involved in politics for some time and he knows lots of tricks.
Overaction? Well, at this point given Sirota's ominous warnings last night about forthcoming ominous all-out attacks, I'm gonna guess Bernie's reaction was predicated on having been forewarned about the neutron blast that was detonated today from Hillary.
I'm sure you know that there are altogehter different considerations in terms of attacking primary opponents and an opponent in a general election. There's all sorts of blowback involving the former that can factor into the latter, especially in the position Bernie is in by challenging the party elite. I don't know about 4-D chess, but it's sure as hell a matter of walking a tightrope -- and in Bernie's case, during a hurricane.
And Bernie and Sirota's attacks on Biden have been anything but genteel re. Social Security, M4A, etc. There's good tactical reasons for not slamming head on into Biden re corruption especially when we know the GOP is aiming to turn the Trump trial into the Biden trial. And no good reason to play right into Hillary and the corporate centrists' hands.

A better way to handle this would have been for Bernie to say, "I have many passionate supporters out there and I won't always agree with what they say, but unless they are officially part of my campaign, I will not be part of policing their comments nor is it at all fair to hold me accountable for what these independent voices say. And so my only comment will be that my supporter went farther than I would in characterizing my friend Joe Biden, but we also need to be mindful of the toxic influence of big money in our politics, because even the best people can be tainted by it."
No apology. Not responsible for outside-the-campaign comments. Some distancing from Biden w/o putting him on a level ethically and legally with Trump. No enabling the MSM/DNC double standard (per K Ball) on how they take a hard line on "party unity" wrt Bernie and how that gets ignored when negative or caustic comments against the left candidate are made by the acceptable centrists in the party.
Re Hillary, her remarks sound partially like projection -- esp the "unlikable" part. Last I saw, her favorable numbers were below 40; Bernie's above 70. And her remark about not being sure if she would support a Bernie nomination are going to be fair game on the party unity issue going forward -- provided people in the Bernie camp and the candidate himself have the courage to fight back by using the other side's own words against them. An unintended gift to the Sanders campaign.
Teachout isn't just a supporter
. . . but a surrogate who has been making opening remarks at some of his rallies. I imagine she still will be at least in NYS.
The bad guys are looking to splice together videos of Bernie's remarks so he has to be careful about what he says and what gets pinned to him. And that's similarly to if he had gone all out on combatting all the Russia nonsense.
With Biden as their favorite candidate, they sure as hell can't let up on the us against Russia crapola because Burisma and the investment they've made in it the last three years.
The Bernie is a Russian asset claim is getting ratcheted up as we debate whether or not he should attack Biden more when he already is doing that and very profoundly and directly. Let the Republicans rip Biden up on Burisma. Bernie hasn't apologized for going after Biden on issues that will hopefully stick and gain Bernie some traction, namely social security and civil rights.

would be a reason to make these political moves.

It is a natural part of who he is. It could be a disability of sorts, so look at his accomplishments and admire him even more for going at life full force with one arm tied behind his back. I think I know why he is like this, and I'm not gonna say. Better to just let it be.
On the plus side, his ethos, his character, is exceptional, and most honest people know it. So it is a particular kind of advantage. We could let him keep that clean slate and we normies could do the "dirty work" for him -- because all it would entail is telling simple verifiable truths about his enemies. That's easy, we can do that.

Nothing new.
Bernie always likes to keep the focus on policy differences and avoid personal attacks on his opponents, and while he doesn't tell rank and file supporters what to say, those linked to the campaign are held to a higher standard.
Besides, Bernie is a lot of Biden voters' second choice. No sense in alienating them or, with impeachment coming up, giving Trump any extra ammunition.

Bernie hasn't apologized for anything written or put out there by Sirota. Sirota has been relentless in his attacks on Biden for his stand on the issues, especially regarding cutting social security.
If he starts apologizing for saying stuff a paid surrogate says, then I'll worry about Bernie.
i can see where Bernie draws the line on any charges of corruption. And the point made by the tweeter above is spot on. Not corrupt still puts the emphasis on corrupt. And indeed Bernie has to be super careful about what he says given his role as a juror in the Senate trial.

there isn't a front-runner. Sure, one or another will be ahead in a poll and maybe Biden is ahead in more than the others but it's not like Biden's got anything sewn up.

I think that David Sirota gazed into the future last night.
I definitely don’t like Bernie
apologizing for something he has no responsibility for, especially to Biden. I think it is consistent with his ethics and how he has conducted himself his whole life. That’s important when there’s very few politicians alive who won’t sacrifice everything for a brief advantage or to score a cheap point.
He’s taking responsibility for his campaign. Full stop. He’s doing it despite potential harm to himself because he thinks that’s what leaders do. I also don’t think he would have done this if Zephyr hadn’t used the word corruption. It is by any reasonable definition but it’s more or less legal and ops normal in our politics. Personally I’m sick to death of leaders who seem to take the lead only when it benefits them. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in as a people and country. Winning isn’t everything but that attitude is a big part of the problem.
I like the spirited discussion on this. There’s a lot to digest. I may change my mind but I think this isn’t a big deal that should hurt Bernie’s campaign.
