Australia’s Angry Summer: This Is What Climate Change Looks Like

Wildfires need four ingredients: available fuel, dryness of that fuel, weather conditions that aid the rapid spread of fire and an ignition. Climate change is making Australian wildfires larger and more frequent because of its effects on dryness and fire weather.

Australia’s climate has warmed by more than one degree Celsius over the past century, and this change has caused an increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves.
...
Increasing temperatures cause increased evaporation that dries the soil and fuel load. More than a decade ago, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that ongoing anthropogenic climate change was virtually certain to increase in intensity and frequency of fires in Australia.
...
The effects of rising temperature on drying out the environment can be countered by rainfall or by the growth of vegetation that increases humidity locally. But in the southern half of Australia, where rain falls mostly in the winter, there has been a substantial decline in precipitation. In the southwest of the country, rainfall has declined by around 20 percent since the 1970s, and in the southeast, around 11 percent of rainfall has been lost since the 1990s.

One of the factors driving this long-term loss of winter rainfall is the positive trend in the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). This change is causing the westerly winds that circle the Southern Ocean to shift southward toward Antarctica, causing rain-bearing winter cold fronts to pass south of the Australian continent.

...
The current summer has presented the perfect storm for wildfire. Long-term climate warming, combined with years of drought, colliding with a set of climate patterns that deliver severe fire weather.

In the tropical Indian Ocean, one of the most severe positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events on record played out this year.

En-ROADS
Climate Change Solutions Simulator

En-ROADS is a transparent, freely-available policy simulation model that provides policymakers, educators, businesses, the media, and the public with the ability to explore, for themselves, the likely consequences of energy, economic growth, land use, and other policies and uncertainties, with the goal of improving their understanding. The simulation, developed by Climate Interactive, Ventana Systems, and MIT Sloan, runs on an ordinary laptop in a fraction of a second, is available online, offers an intuitive interface, has been carefully grounded in the best available science, and has been calibrated against a wide range of existing integrated assessment, climate and energy models.

Here is the simulator. Give it a try.

My time is precious and this essay is short. These two articles called out to me this week and are well worth reading in full.

I am one of those who is of the opinion that the only solution we have to the Climate Crisis, among many others, is to elect Bernie Sanders. The reasons have been eloquently delineated by a great number of people here at c99.

I will be intermittently around to host. Thank you all, for all that you do. I read most of what is here and deeply appreciate the depth and breadth of the essays and comments. The thread is open...

The youth vote is the keystone of this election imo. They have not been polled as much and the great majority of them are for Bernie. It’s their future that is at stake. And they know that. Thanks for all your many comments regarding Bernie.

It will be more difficult dealing with the cheating dims in the primary than winning in the general IMO.

And so disappointing. The ptb are terrified of a Sanders administration. Therefore Bloomberg.

We, must (not need) to move beyond our differences and work together. We have so much more in common than we don't and light years more in common that we do with the kleptocrats.

Isn’t the only thing his money can buy.

I finally got around to watching “Joker” the other day, and my first reaction to the character of Thomas Wayne was “Bloomberg”. Which sounds obvious until you realize that the movie was made before he announced.

BTW, it’s worth watching as a character study in what austerity does to people and populations.

We worked hard to get him to win the primary here 4 years ago. Fun and a lot of good people well met.

Stumbled upon a bit of philosophy this morning. Inspired by Hanna Arendt, then set wild.

Nature controls the world. It behooves mankind to be respectful of this.

Cheers

activism and writings. Good luck with your campaigns.
Raining here yet again, temps in the low 40s.

Time to get started, but on what? Camping tips always derange all of the household schedules. Rain also too. Ergo chaos and confusion. Hail Eris, I guess.

Have yourself a great one.

Rained here too but clear now and forward. Supposedly big wind comes. And clear skies. Should be your way soon. Hope your coastal jaunt was good. I usually start with the thing that is the biggest and the easiest to do. Then I fool myself into thinking I’ve accomplished a lot. Ha. Works though. Have a great one yourself.

There is some geological evidence that as the ice caps melt, the mantle of the Earth shifts and causes more volcanic action as well as causing the mantle itself to rise upwards as the weight decreases. Edit.

Bernie is our hope and deep thanks for your work on his behalf; been spreading stickers around and voicing my opinion at every chance. No doubt the kids are behind him; also working behind the scenes on other social media sites attempting to 'war room' the negatives promoted by many.

All well on the western front a.k.a. the left coast. You reminded me that I need to go buy stickers. Heh. This is war, no doubt about it. And we must/shall do everything we can to turn it around. The good news is that we have a ground game that we have built on for four+ years. Go Bernie!

As others have said, thanks for your work both here and for Bernie. There is an interesting article at Vox that you might like to see:
These 3 supertrees can protect us from climate collapse
But can we protect them?

A tad overstated here and there, perhaps, but a kind of experimental online format that lends itself well to this topic. We live on a beautiful and amazing place.

I'm trying to do something similar, but I was unable to register for an event later this month because they wouldn't take my credit card (Action Network basically blamed me, even though I've used the card multiple times on line since then and tried it 3 times...) Sadly I will be busy all of February so I'm not sure what I can do.

On the reading front, I ran across this 100 page tome from INREA on PV recycling today and am wading through it.

Sounds frustrating. The next six weeks are critical. And we all do what we can. I looked at the link and it said end of life management-photovoltaic cells. Just flashed that they were talking about end of life for the planet. Will read more later. But it gave me pause. Have a good one... Lol
