@QMS
on most days, though I don't usually go there but follow whatever leads I find reading the daily OTs. It's funny, the impact that had n me when I first heard it. There was a whole maelstrom of different musical styles and genres all popping up everywhere all the time. This comes to mind too:

In the United States, violence against indigenous women has reached unprecedented levels on tribal lands and in Alaska Native villages. More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence, and more than 1 in 2 have experienced sexual violence. Alaska Native women continue to suffer the highest rate of forcible sexual assault and have reported rates of domestic violence up to 10 times higher than in the rest of the United States. Though available data is limited, the number of missing and murdered American Indian and Alaska Native women and the lack of a diligent and adequate federal response is extremely alarming to indigenous women, tribal governments, and communities. On some reservations, indigenous women are murdered at more than ten times the national average.

https://indianlaw.org/issue/ending-violence-against-native-women

So we pen up first nations peoples and then allow a lawless intrusion onto the rez. My understanding is it is the worst in the fracked fields of the Dakotas in addition to Alaska.

Well thanks for the OT and the music. Have a hired hand this AM to help with a final clean up from all the summer projects. Looking forward to completion.

Hope you all have a good day!

indigenous people in the US, and, as you note, especially in the oil fracking camps, and seemingly has a wide ranging effect from there. I recall reading that it was a significant problem in MN as a presumed overflow from the Dakotas.

Good luck with your clean up. Our summer projects still continue - the curse of mild weather. We just finished turning one of the raised beds that had been invaded from below by huge networks of roots from the now dead lemon tree. The soil is far from the best too, even after turning and removing large amounts of invading roots, so we seeded buckwheat and crimson clover to serve as a winter cover crop and spring soil enhancement when we dig it in and plant spring veggies. We have a new bed with some fall greens and veggies, but another in process that is still just a bare patch of ground where the lemon was, trees that need pruning (and picking in the case of the apple), plus all of the normal stuff that normal suburbanites do as well, such as cleaning gutters and some trailer mods and outfitting.

However, this is crazy week, so we have to taper off and make room for that and concessions to normality, etc.

I suspect you'll need further music for all that clean up work, so - work song

Have a good one.

It was a loop race this year, 800 miles beginning and ending in Ensenada. (course map here)
The winning Trophy Truck did the loop in a little over 16 hrs.
(unofficial results here)
Much amateur video now showing up on YouTube.
Here's some from race mile 150, where the course ran south along the Pacific.

Had to pull in late one evening with driver fatigue after a late start out of Bakersfield headed for Tamarisk Grove campground in ABDSP, I swear those guys were running most of the night and up before dawn, but we did get some rest, if not too much sleep.

I'm not into that whole "toy" thing but, having driven thousands of miles of desert roads myself, I do like to follow the 1000. I'm old enough to remember when it first started and I'm sure you do too.
Here's the finish line yesterday morning:

Their deaths went virtually unnoticed, as worldwide all attention was focused on the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Lewis, but that's my skewed view. Huxley was another matter. Funny that they both died the same day, but not really, mathematically, if they were just two guys, a and b.

Thanks for reading and have a great one.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

Anja Geitz's picture

I think it's important to add that violence against women and girls also includes the psychological as well as the sexual. Human trafficking and child marriage definitely fall under that category. One would think after thousands of years of both practices, we would have irradiated both as an example of our own evolution as human beings. That we have not, is an unforgivable failing on humanity's part and only highlights further the perils of being born a female.

Speaking of which, I have lost my patience with men who feel they are entitled to comment on female appearances, especially while said females are at work. We hired new crew members earlier this month, and I have already heard them tell me stories of men who make comments about their appearances, and even go as far as to give them their cards so "we could go out sometime"

These women are young and typically don't want to confront men who behave this way, so they say nothing, or laugh it off. But here's the problem; men like this need to hear from the young women they approach that what they are doing is NOT ok, and women need to feel empowered to say, "I am at work and your behavior is making me uncomfortable" directly to the person who is making them uncomfortable. I realize that some women have difficulty with this, or sometimes isn't in their nature, but teaching our girls to be a little more assertive, and our boys to be respectful, should not fall under the category of "wishful thinking" on our part.

Ugh.

That's a lot of violence but I think that is world wide. Says a lot about some men. Thankfully not all.

Preparing for the rains to come. Welcome but it will likely be a boat load. This is a very otl day and so far I've knocked off a bunch.

Found this as I was searching the news for climate info. Thought it was funny how surprised they were. Much we do not really know about.

The “Hobbit” at 15

A little more than 15 years ago, the world was introduced to a new, pint-sized member of the hominin family that shook the science of human origins. It was the discovery of a single, tiny skeleton named Homo floresiensis and nicknamed “the Hobbit.” There was no one thing that made the find shocking. Instead, detail after detail generated a perfect storm of commotion. First, there was the creature’s anatomy: standing at just over a meter tall, with a tiny, chimpanzee-size brain, the hobbit was surprisingly little. It also had an odd combination of features, a mixture of traits that usually appear solely in either ancient human ancestors or modern ones.

Then, there was the place of discovery. The volcanic, Indonesian island of Flores lies across a deepwater straight and is thus inhabited only by creatures able to make treacherous water crossings. The timeframe was perplexing as well: the hobbit was proposed to have existed only 18,000 years ago. This was a time when modern Homo sapiens were thought to have been left alone on the planet, the final upright-walking ape left standing. It was also a time when and were known to have been in the area.

The implications were staggering, challenging much of what scientists thought they knew about human evolution.

And once again:
New York City purged 200,000 voters in 2016. It wasn’t a mistake

What a contrast! Despite the turmoil in Hong Kong and as concerned about (and tempted to try to rig) the outcome as the Chinese central government and communist party must be, authorities still manage to pull off a fair and free election where an upstart movement wins most of the seats — using, what else? Paper ballots, hand marked and hand counted.

What will Bernie and his supporters be subjected to in the primaries and at the convention this time? What will they do about it?

DNC in an honest fashion with die-hard supporters. They would cut you off well before you could get even a tiny fraction of the evidence on the table. Huge numbers are still that way. That, in turn, prevents one from pointing out that if somebody is willing to lie cheat and steal in order to obtain high political office, you really, really do not want them to hold high political office.

continuum. We are already a fascist state. It could be much worse, more complete, or an even greater degree of fascism, but we are not a democracy, we lack a real free press, we have multiple official propaganda sources and the interests of the government and the corporates (and oligarchs) are merged and identical. When Mussolini spoke of the identity of government and corporate interests, he was using corporate as a special term, but that term, as he used it, is not different from our situation. Sure, "THE Church" was a corporate, monolithic anc corrupt with many members and followers, but we lack such an institution though we do pander to the most extreme fundamentalist christianistas. There was an entity that designated productive enterprises, in essence, businesses, but one where labor had a seat at the table, hwereas here, non-corrupt labor is kicked out. Banksters. Bureaucracies. They were the oligarchs and elites, and today government interests are also identical with the interests of oligarchs, elites and powerful businesses. And rule of law? Long gone. "Where every cop is a criminal ...". We're there, but afraid to admit it.

@enhydra lutris

Writers of books on fascism have spent entire chapters trying to explain what you did in a few sentences. Thank-you!

We are already a fascist state. It could be much worse, more complete, or an even greater degree of fascism...

Yes. There have been multiple fascisms. To attempt to define them as a thing, something you can easily put your finger on, is not likely due to the variances and its adaptability to places and times.

I try to think of fascism as a slippery, slimy eel. In general, people expect the armbands, torchlight processions, and foreign sounding names. The military-type dress of some former fascists was not out-of-place for the time and locations. It was no different in times past than for us seeing an American flag lapel pin on Chuck Schumer or Donald Trump. It was commonly expected garb.

When Mussolini spoke of the identity of government and corporate interests, he was using corporate as a special term, but that term, as he used it, is not different from our situation.

Kudos to you for pointing this out. Mussolini's use of the word "corporatism" does not have quite the same meaning that we (especially Americans) have of it. You did explain briefly that it included more than businesses, and that is something often missed, but indeed our situation is very similar. Maybe the term is close enough for our uses here as long as includes the oligarchy in general. It was important to point out how labor was part of Mussolini's corporatism, controlled and sold out, as now ours mostly is today. The support of today's American fascists by the political movement known as Fundamentalist Christianity is well noted when compared to the Church in Italy during Mussolini's time.

You're right. We're there. My belief is that not many truly see it, because it's far from just Trump. When you see the Democrats begging for Assange's head on a platter, you're seeing it; when you see the clamor for war by the resistance, you're seeing it; when you see the support for the overthrow of democratically elected leaders in foreign nations, you're seeing it; when your website is blacklisted, unable to pay the bills and consequently shut down, you're seeing it.

When Trump is gone, and at some point he will be gone, the fascism will remain.

our problems, but probably the most overt and blatant totem standing in for them. Our problems are systemic and our leaders are usually more subtle, but Hillary wouold've pushed the corporate interests as hard and pretty much as far, especially because she was already playing ball with the security state "corporate", and he hasn't been.
