More Thoughts and Prayers
Americans should never have to fear living in our country because it's a fucking war zone.
Here's a video of what it was like during the #texasshooting where a 17-month-old child was shot in the face.
This should NEVER happen.#GunReformNOW pic.twitter.com/Ws2tdVpmxt

just nothing more....

I can't wait
for the new legislation allowing guns in schools and churches to take effect.
Texas will dominate the news cycles, and entrepreneurs will open up more gun shops.
Maybe more funeral homes as well.
Speculation is this mid-term, Texas might flip to blue. My speculation is the new Blue Team will have no agenda whatsoever regarding gun control.

The death toll has risen
to 7. Gov. Abbott says there will be justice brought to bear on that dead shooter. Not sure how that will work. Also, Texas will unify,("as we always do") and he suggests we all pray.
For such a unified state, we sure have a lots of mass shootings.

Pulling the Trigger
Working in retail, I meet a lot of people and see my share of strange behavior. From the germaphobe who won't let me touch his items (he holds them up for me so I can punch in the sku numbers manually), to the woman who puts every item in a plastic bag and then tells me that "they have to sort through the land fills anyway", I just have to shake my head. But yesterday, I saw something different. Something that really made me heartsick and angry. An Israeli woman came to my register a day after the Texas shooting wearing a necklace with a pendant in the shape of a machine gun.
I mean what kind of culture does a person live in when this kind of jewelry is "fashionable"? It really pains me to see how distorted our moral compass is, and how lightly we view our shared humanity.
Ugh.

People just need to pray for protection
Well since it has been working quite well since the 90's after Columbine I think it is the best thing we can do to keep people from dying when someone decides to kill lots of people with their gawd given right to a gun.
From the comments:
Seriously? Nah not so much.
The response to that...
Sandra Bland died in prison after being arrested for not signaling when a cop rode up her car's ass and she was trying to get out of its way. This guy was pulled over just because he didn't signal turning left. Guess that was worth it... or maybe not. If congress couldn't bring back the assault weapons ban after Sandy Hook I am going to cynically think that they reallly don't give a rat's ass how many of us die. This sure is good for the insurance companies and the go fund me type fundraising sites that make a killing in profit after every mass shooting. Yay for the free market. Right?
Here is the go fund me account for the 17 month old girl who was shot. The family is asking for $300,000 and has raised over $200,000 which the GFM owner receives 3%. Great gig don't you think making money off of people's pain and suffering and not having to do a gawd damned thing for it.
While those of us who find this utter nonsense
Not to mention infuriatingly unresponsive to the epidemic of gun violence, there are those who genuinely believe that turning to God can heal souls and turn 'evil' hearts into redeemed ones. So, then the question becomes, how does one even begin to engage in a dialogue with them?

Ricky Gervais told a "joke" to Jerry Seinfeld
on Seinfeld's odd little talk show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It goes something like this:
An Auschwitz survivor dies and finds himself in heaven. God greets him, and they chat for a bit. The guy says, "Hey, do you want to hear a Holocaust joke?" God is somewhat taken aback, but agrees to listen to the joke. After the punch line, God says, "That's not funny, really." And the guy responds, "I guess you had to be there."
Seinfeld was struck by the beauty of this joke, the layers of meta. Indeed, the joke is itself not funny.

Has some very insightful things to say about religion. The joke you quoted being one of them.
But perhaps my all time favorite joke Ricky has done (which is funny) came about through his work during the 1990's with AIDS charities. I still can't look at this bit he does about an actual leaflet the charity he was involved with sent out without laughing. (Warning though, the language is a bit graphic)
Enjoy...

How indeed
If prayers worked then there wouldn't be any more shootings or bad things happening to people. The kids in the detention camps would be happily living with their parents while their cases worked their way through the courts. Kid wouldn't be....... and none of the other horrible things that happen would.
I remember people telling me that they were praying for me after my brother died, but that didn't stop my mind from imploding. But it's the thoughts that count.
I thought of you when I saw this
it was refreshing to me that when the parents of
the wounded toddler made a statement, rather than blathering on about how sweet wonderful jesus had saved their beautiful little girl, they instead expressed their sorrow for those whose loved ones were killed.

God infused dialogue
Making the rounds on social media may "console" those looking for answers, but for the rest of us, it's just nauseating and pathetic in the face of willful obstanance by those gun loving lawmakers and their constituents who put everyones children in danger.

Hmm could this have been prevented if the cops had looked into
his when a neighbor called them to report that he had threatened her by pointing his rifle at her?
Police never responded when neighbor of Odessa, Texas shooter called to report him last month
The kid who shot up Parkland HS in Florida had so many warning signs and neighbors called the police on him around 20 times, but the police just ignored him. Hindsight..
