My cat, Luciente, died the evening of Tuesday, July 23rd.

She was nineteen years old.

"Now as the companions sat or walked together they spoke of Gandalf, and all that each had known and seen of him came clear before their minds. As they were healed of hurt and weariness of body the grief of their loss grew more keen. Often they heard nearby Elvish voices singing, and knew that they were making songs of lament for his fall, for they caught his name among the sweet sad words that they could not understand...But if Legolas was with the Company, he would not interpret the songs for them, saying that he had not the skill, and that for him the grief was still too near, a matter for tears and not yet for song."
--The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien

Here's Willie singing Dylan's song...
He was a Friend of Mine....

19 years is a nice life span for a feline buddy. Hope the passing was easy.

All the best....

@Lookout 19 years is a very good kitty run, CStMS. Your heart is still broken though. All too familiar with that sadness. Rec'd, my friend.

@Lookout
I did a quick wiki dive to refresh my memory - it's way older than Dylan, he modified and arranged it, but it is "Shorty George (he was a friend of mine)".

The earliest known version of the song is titled "Shorty George" (Roud 10055).[2] A performance by African-American inmate Smith Casey, who accompanied himself on guitar, was first recorded by musicologist couple John A. and Ruby Terrill Lomax in 1939 at the Clemens State Farm in Brazoria County, Texas.[1]

The professional singer who first picked up the song from the Library of Congress recordings was Rolf Cahn. He recorded the song on his influential 1961 Folkways album Rolf Cahn & Eric von Schmidt, where the song for the first time was titled "He Was a Friend of Mine".[3]

Great song and performance all the same.

@Lookout
to disturb this heart-wrenching thread.

May be we should invent a new thing called an "Open Thread for Bad Boys and Girls" ?

Sigh. I am sorry for your loss, CstMS. I am a dog person and I feel so bad, because I gave my beloved Sasha dog (named after Obama"s daughter, yeah and I am sticking by my guns, it was the right thing to do, just that you know.) to a new home and I can't forget ever how that made me feel. Miserable. For ever. It never goes away. I want my own piece of land and my own dog. At least that I should be able to accomplish, no?

Move on, nothing here.

@mimi

want to in this thread.

I mean it.

And I hope very much that someday you get the piece of land and can have a dog.

I am very sorry you had to give away your dog! In some ways, worse than losing a beloved companion to death, because it probably felt like it didn't have to be.

Losing a companion is always difficult no matter what the circumstances. Depending on what you believe I hope you get a chance to experience their company again at some point, in whatever form.

So, my Forge got here Friday. Haven't fired it up yet due to doing Judo and other things. But I'm feeling very awesome and it's very nice to have a working model now. NOW I see what I was doing wrong. It was really, really stupid too. Smile But hey, we learn more by losing than by winning, and I intend to learn more than anybody else on the planet if possible.

We lost our twin basement cats about 2 months apart in early 2018 at almost exactly 19 years old. It is actually a fairly long life for a cat. It is harder than it should be, but much of life is.

I recently made a vain attempt to rescue a little kitten, but it wandered away. It was run over. I happened to see it in the road.
As horrible as the sight of it was, at least my daily searches, my daily attempts to feed it, came to an end.
I never had the love and friendship with the kitten that you had with Lucient.
Again, I am just so sorry.

They sure do make it tough on us when they go. I'm so sorry. My dog passed 2 years ago Cinco de Mayo. I caught myself bawling about her Friday night. Crying for me, like the song says.

I hope you understand why I don't respond to each of you individually. I'm in a lot of pain right now. But please be assured that each of your comments means the world to me.

She had a good, long life.
My friends lost their doggo the other day too; she was I think 16, and had kidney problems these past several months. She was a very sweet girl.
So sad. *hugs*

My cat Muffin was 18. She was from the dairy farm in Iowa. She knew the farm and my parents. My family in Texas didn't know any of them. Losing her was really hard too. I feel for you. Sad

My beloved Molly left this world eight years ago today. She was just 14 and declined rapidly for some undiagnosed reason, though FSM knows I tried. Without fail, every July 30th, I feel vaguely out-of-sorts until I remember why. No one is ever forgotten if they're carried in your heart.

I know the depths of your pain and loss. I can also say that it will, and does, get better. Being in the moment with your grief helps. Soon, you'll be able to remember your sweet kitty with a smile.

Take good care.
