Friday Photography - Looking Back

Evening all. I haven’t looked through a lens in over a week, which is highly unusual for me, but life is quite unusual since my mother fell and fractured her hip only 48 hours after I arrived.

These two photos are from some days spent with my sister on Vancouver Island, which now feels like forever ago.

The second is even more spectacular but I can't figure out the first.
What is that? And what the hell is going on with the smaller rocks in the back that have discernible letters and numbers?

I found a couple more.

@Pricknick

The first photo is a life-size part of a very large type of kelp, the part that I figure keeps it afloat when detached from whatever the kelp was originally attached to. The second is of Sitka Spruce trees at sunset on the west coast of VI.

And your photo is what?

Sorry to hear about your mom, Janis. How awful for both of you. I had just moved home from California and the day before my furniture arrived my mom had a stroke. She had found my home for me and was looking forward to helping me move in and decorating it, but that happened and she was never herself again. Hope that the rest of your visit goes better.

in “middle” school. (When and why did the terminology change? It was called “intermediate” school when I was there sixty years ago. Dumbing down because “intermediate” has too many syllables?)

Part of shop was “mechanical drawing,” how to draft paper originals for blueprints. All of those documentation techniques have nowadays been made obsolete by CAD (computer-assisted design) software.

junior high is 7-8, intermediate is usually 3-6 or 4-6 or 5-6, depending on district.

basically, if a district has a junior high, it will usually have an intermediate; if it doesn't have a junior high it will usually have a middle school. at least, that's how it is around here.

home economics no longer exists. cooking is "culinary arts", and lots of boys take it. whether people can learn sewing, i don't know.

shop class is still around, i guess, depending on the district.

back in the day, i believe that some boys in the grade ahead of me were the first in our district (with 6 junior highs) to take cooking class instead of shop class; while i'm pretty sure that the first girls to take shop were in my own grade. it's only in the last few years that i've really begun to reflect on our experience, being adolescents just as feminism was making its way down into the culture of junior and senior high school.

Yellow-breasted Chat - they were classified with warblers the last 70 years but are not, and a year or two ago actually got their own monotypic family. Allegedly nearest blackbirds, says the dna. Great songsters, they make all kinds of wild noises, and will sing through the night, for which the Mockingbird usually takes the heat. They have a great flight-song display whence they flutter and flail with legs hanging down, appearing barely staying airborne whilst pouring forth all manner of strange sounds. We have a couple pair nest very nearby, often the male sings in the yard. They bring their babies to the birdbath right after fledging to teach them that part.

Female Dobsonfly, probably Eastern Dobsonfly. They can draw blood with those jaws. They are like huge Antlions, can have a 5" wingspan, the larvae is aquatic, called Hellgrammites and the best fish bait. Males have huge longer sickle like jaws, but which they cannot hurt you with, unlike the female. They barely live a week as flying adults. This one was on the hose on the gas pump at station a couple days ago.

a monarch yet this year. one small swallowtail, and one with similar colors who zips about so rapidly it's hard to identify. mr. wd reckons it's a painted lady but i think he's just trippin'. ; )

cool photo with the kelp float, janis b. dagnabbit about your mum;; i know you'll tell her we all send healing vibes her way. and to you as well; i've found that caretakers have a harder time than patients often times, esp. as they don't get the pain meds.

The first thing I do when I come back is put on some music and pour a glass of wine. Then I answer the messages my mom's friend's have left, and then maybe I cook something, but mostly just make a big salad.

Thank you dearly for the healing vibes, you know they help.

sorry to hear about your Mom, fracturing her hip. It's obviously very serious, but, hopefully, with physical therapy (later), she'll fully recover, and be like new.

My Mom almost never used her Medicare/Medigap insurance--only twice for anything considered major, she was so incredibly healthy. That was when she fell--first time at age 89; second time on her 97th Birthday.

According to her Recovery Room RN, the surgical team said she 'sailed through surgery with flying colors.' No complications, except, that her small town local ER physician had so heavily sedated her for transport (to larger city for surgery), the surgical anesthesiologist had the operation postponed for almost 48 hours, to give the drugs time to clear her system.

Hopefully, your Mom's not as elderly, and will recover with even more speed and ease. Pleasantry Will definitely send positive karma in her (and your) direction.

Thanks for hosting this evening's Photography OT. I've had to help Mr M pack the vehicle--we're trying to travel over the weekend, before the monsoon from Barry is upon us--so, didn't even have a chance to get a 'stock photo' to share. (Sorry!)

Love the photos, especially of British Columbia. Been years, but, when we traveled through that neck-of-the-woods, Lethbridge was one of our favorite places in BC, along the route to Alaska.

Again, best to you and your Mom. I'm sure she's very happy and relieved to have you with her.

@Unabashed Liberal

You’re right, it’s serious, especially at almost 91 years-old. I made a mistake and called it a fracture of the hip, but it’s really a fracture of the pelvis which is somewhat less serious and didn't require surgery. My mom is a feisty, yet physically fragile independent woman. I hope she takes more responsibility for her more vulnerable state when she returns from rehabilitation than she did before. I’m glad I’m here with her.

I so enjoy your compassion and understanding, which I perceive to be an amazingly strong part of you. I wish you three much good health and comfort. Thank you Mollie xox

are always so encouraging--they make me hopeful that there will be 'a better day' for all.

Smile

Hey, 'feisty' is more than half the battle, IMO. Other than excellent genes, I've always figured that possessing that trait in spades, was one of the primary reasons Mother lived so long. She was like an energizer bunny--never stopped, never slowed down. She refused to use a walker, for the most part. Even after the second fall, and hip fracture, she only used it sparingly, and grudgingly.

Anyhoo, happy to hear that your Mom won't have to endure a surgical procedure. That's good. Also, glad you'll be there for her to lean on, when she goes through physical therapy--which sure doesn't look like fun (to me). We went through it with my MIL, as well, after her fall, and hip surgery.

(Traveled today, thinking we'd beat the flooding associated with Barry, just to find out we'll be in the thick of it--worse than if we'd stayed put. Phew!)

Hey, have a good rest-of-your-weekend. Glad you've got a pool to enjoy, in this ungodly heat and humidity.

Pleasantry

the first season of this show included some really smart comedy, especially for its era. the thanksgiving episode is legendary. every american should know it.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQvCNLIVydM]

this episode probably could not be made today, because of the way it handled some racial issues:
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD7UarDxcv0]
but the funniest part is from the first scene:
Les: Have you ever wondered why Russian women all look like men?
Bailey: I hadn't noticed.
Les: I think they kidnap men from all over the world, take them to Moscow, and turn them into Russian women.
Bailey: Do you?
Les: I think that's what happened to Jimmy Hoffa. By now, he's probably a grandmother in the Ukraine.

They also had a Marianne/Ginger thing -- just as any young man with any sense had a crush on Marianne, not Ginger, any young man with any sense had a crush on Bailey, not Jennifer.

I've always wanted to be an artist, but I can't draw at all. I learned about acrylic pouring or fluid art from watching YouTube. So, I've been rescuing old records from thrift stores and turning them into art.

I've painted almost 20 records so far. I also make magnets from the paint runoff because I hate to waste paint. Now if I can just figure out a way to sell them.

Sorry to hear about your mom, @janis b.
