Rachel Sides with Bolton on Venezuela

How much further will Rachel fall from her days at Air America when she raged against the war Bolton got us into?

Medical help would be called for in the case of an addict. In this case the addicting drug appears to be The Benjamins. I'm afraid this is beyond the pale for an average sawbones.

@snoopydawg @detroitmechworks I think many deep into the team politics, vote blue no matter who, etc. really wanted a Limbaugh Beck or O’Riely of their own. So now they have someone to give them simple answers to all life’s problems (it’s all the other team’s fault!) and to confirm how right they are sticking with their team. Trusting Maddow means never having to admit Trump is another link in the chain, rather than some aberration that we can just remove and all will be well again.

Of course that she keeps the sheep herded is a feature, not a bug.

@The Aspie Corner Blue Team's been hitting the collectivist hate-politics so hard that Red-Team publications have been repeatedly managing to gather up what I believe to be the more accurate take on some what-passes-these-days-for-stories (#MeToo and rape hysteria, the politicization of "gaming", etc) like English chestnuts.

The stupidest mistake Blue-Team could possibly make has been made: Surrendering their hard-earned claim to being the side of reason and truth.

@The Aspie Corner That said, the idea that gaming is somehow a hotbed of bigotry in any way shape or form is like saying Saudi Arabia is a lesbian's paradise. A longstanding reputation, even if that's all it is, doesn't just flip 180 degrees overnight.

That, and the whole idea of stereotyping and politicizing "gamers" is AT LEAST as stupid as doing so with "readers" or "watchers".

Yes, let's use a single word to encapsulate people who like Gone With The Wind, people who like The Naked Gun, people who like Monday Night Football, people who like anime, people who like MTV's Jackass, and people who like The Mind's Eye CGI videos. That's literally what it's like (actually, no - it's much, much worse). It's so stupid that I have a hard time believing I'm even interpreting what all I'm hearing correctly - because if so, it's nothing short of Bizarro-World they're talking about. This CAN'T be real (or it's a massive, massive misunderstanding).

@The Liberal Moonbat "They'll rot your brain," parents always used to tell us. Not so long ago it was television and radio.

Then it became "Video games make kids violent." or "Video games cause mass shootings." (Even president Dipshit used that talking point). Hell, the original Doom was blamed for mass shooters in the 90s.

'Social' media has only made the reactionary mindset worse.

@The Aspie Corner
I'm curious as to where you see significant divergence between the reality we live in, versus decades of predictions about the possible negative effects of a popular culture (aimed at children and young adults) that glorifies hedonism and violence -- not to mention stupidity.

People generally seem willing -- even eager -- to believe that particular elements of popular culture (i.e., the elements of popular culture they don't themselves enjoy) can affect society in particular ways (i.e., ways they themselves view as negative). Often, they will go so far as to label those elements of popular culture as propaganda: A conscious effort by malicious actors within the "culture industry" to effect a social or political agenda.

They also generally seem willing -- even eager -- to believe that particular elements of popular culture could possibly affect society in particular positive ways, if only the purveyors of those elements would apply themselves to the task. In other words, they'd like to see a conscious effort by actors within the "culture industry" to effect a social or political agenda.

Yet, they generally seem unwilling -- even angrily so -- to entertain the possibility that particular elements of popular culture (i.e., the elements of popular culture in which they immerse themselves) might possibly affect society in particular negative ways.

Curious creatures, are these humans.

@Lookout Call of Duty hardly counts for anything. That shit's for dumb jocks and (on the more sympathetic end of the spectrum) fundie kids whose parents won't let them play fantasy games.

Still, "gamer" means nothing. The idea of an organized "gaming culture" is anathema to the creative arts, and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something...most likely Mountain Dew.

Don't even get me started on the difference between "video games" and "computer games" - not to mention tabletop games! Are we REALLY supposed to think of these things (and more!) as all one homogeneous thing???

@Lookout Self-aware ignorance is something the world needs more of - especially when what we're really talking about a dearth of is 'information' at best (mostly just 'data', or in some cases, 'dogma'), not 'knowledge' at all. Gods protect everyone who is still "ignorant" of garbage. That word really needs to stop being used as a pejorative. It ultimately just means "you disagree for some reason I don't understand" - hence it is the truly ignorant who USE it.

The younger generation still needs its parents, perhaps even now more than ever. No American under 40 has any real conception of life in a healthy society (at least I was lucky enough to grow up in halcyon-era Silicon Valley, which was the closest thing to it), and of those, none presently under 25 even understands what a FREE society looks like.

She does work for the oligarchy's media and gets paid a lot of money for it. I'm sorry, but the only reason this would be shocking to someone is if they seriously don't know how things work. Those that have continued to watch Maddow on MSNBC are still caught in the matrix.

Sure she is working for the PTBs mouthpiece media, but she was against everything she spouts now on a nightly basis. I listened to her on Air America where she constantly talked about our war crimes in Iraq. Hence the tag of how she can look at herself in the mirror or come to work every day like she asks Bolton.

Then there's her being on board with the Venezuelan coup as Mate says in his tweet. She was against Trump meeting with Kim and was okay with him bombing Syria.

up

@wendy davis on her probably modest FP stances, but it does indeed appear she is taking the same kinda cowardly, eyes-averted stance on some of these foreign matters as Bernie and Liz Warren do. Very disappointing. A reminder there is not even a bare quorum among Dem/lefty leaders taking progressive positions in FP. They run and hide, don't comment, or give a weasely half-in favor, half against answer. Maduro is a dictator who brutally mistreats his people (notice no mention of US sanctions hurting those people), free and fair elections need to be held -- but I'm against US military intervention. Thanks for that bold courage.

Only Tulsi Gabbard has consistently spoken out against our regime change wars. Code Pink too. You can count the FP public critics on one hand.

You would think it would be obvious that our military budget and foreign wars are soaking up so much of the budget that should be redirected to all the great domestic matters that need attention, which these silent/disappointing progressive leaders lament our not addressing. The math and the logic are quite evident.

Well, iirc, it took a few years for lib Dems and some sane Rs to come around on the VN War, but only when it became clear that the public was getting fed up. Then it was safe to stand boldly against the war.

@wokkamile Tulsi Gabbard has spoken out against regime-change wars, but she still votes FOR Pentagon funding, in the annual National Defense Authorization Act. I wish her spoken positions more closely aligned to her actual votes.

wendy davis's picture

@wokkamile

not only are candidates' and electeds' words and evolving FP stands fluid, but it depends what one reads into them...because they're so inclined, perhaps? i just looked for anything clse to 'tulsi schools pompeo on VZ', found this, and no...she really didn't.

she was far more as a signatory to ro khanna's letter to pompeo, in my estimation:

"We strongly condemn the Maduro government's actions, including repression of Venezuelan civil society, failed economic policy, the killing of unarmed protestors, disregard for the rule of law, the holding of unfair elections, and blocking humanitarian aid from entering the country. However, threats of military intervention against a failed autocrat who poses no threat to our national security are simply unacceptable. U.S. military action in Venezuela would be unconstitutional without congressional authorization and illegal internationally without approval from the United Nations. We were deeply troubled to learn that President Trump, after having spoken publicly about a "military option" for Venezuela, reportedly pushed for military intervention in Venezuela in meetings with other senior officials in the White House."

"The Venezuelan government's own economic mismanagement and misguided economic policies are in large part to blame for the horrific economic crisis that has unfolded in the country. Yet today Venezuelan government officials can claim that the U.S. is waging an economic war and laying groundwork for direct confrontation, which threatens chaos and mass migration from Venezuela that will be felt throughout the region. The sanctions are already hurting ordinary people and contributing to the ongoing outbound migration of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans, which could also result in a dramatic increase in refugees to the U.S."

and so on. signatories:
The 15 co-signers of the letter are: Reps. Pramila Jayapal (WA-17), Mark Pocan (WI-2), Raul Grijalva (AZ-3), Henry C. "Hank" Johnson (GA -4), Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Ilhan Omar (MN-5), Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ayanna Pressley (MA-7), Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-7), José E. Serrano (NY-15), Tulsi Gabbard (HI-2), Karen Bass (CA-37), Danny K. Davis (IL-7) and Jan Schakowsky (IL-9).

a criminal dictator, but no regime change, end the sanctions; it's not the citizens' fault. i'm supposed to call that 'anti-war' or respect it?

ilhan was gettin' a ton of grief on twitter for tweeting nonsense while the idf's been bombing the hell out of gaza again; she finally condemned it on twitter, as did bernie; he'd recently condemned the *current government* of israel. as well. so yanno; folks make of it what they will...and do.
