Friday Photography - Changing Light of Autumn

Evening all. It's a perfectly warm and sunny day after some heavy rain and wind. Autumn has definitely arrived. We turned back the clocks last weekend, shortening an already shortening day. I'lll be back and forth in the thread for awhile, in between cleaning and gathering ingredients for dinner with friends. I'll open a special bottle of pinot noir I've been saving. Enjoy your evening.

Anyway

It's been snowing for nigh on two days. Ugh!

So, as I've been going through old photos, a shot from a warmer time:

And a little comedy, from a few years back, Santa Mato:

Going out to shovel stuff away from the foundation. Thank goodness it's Friday.

What's the first shot?

I see the snow is getting in its last licks. Sorry about the effort it requires to live with.

The photo is of two shells in a black bowl. One is a large muscle shell with smaller shells that attached themselves over time, and the other is a small scallop shell. I found both on the beach of a beautiful bay last full moon.

Thanks for the visuals, as always. Changing light, bulbs popping here. Amazing array of sights Bollox. Like the idea of a pinot, suffering with an old vine zin. Not bad. Love the greens in your forested wonderland Janis!

Enjoy!

Glad you appreciated the fern I passed while carefully treading the wet deck this morning.

One day I might make it back to the amazing San Diego Zoo. But in the meantime you bring it so alive.

I hope you're able to make it back for a visit to the zoo or safari park. Either one are a great way to spend a day.

@Socialprogressive
heard a kid try to say the elephant word and it came out lalaphoone. Can't seem to unimagine that one. Amazing beasts. And the tricks they do with their trunks! Love when they hold trunk to tail in a procession. Pachyderms.

Cheers!

This meadow is at the top of Sonora pass in the Sierra. Kennedy Meadows has cabins, a restaurant and general store and horse back trips to the incredible backcountry of the Emigrant wilderness. I have to find my other pictures of my trip there. This was the first time Bodega saw snow and she would run downhill and slam on her brakes so she could slide... over and over and over... funny dawg.

Smile

Man I wish I could have been there to see this.

I tried to link the results of my search for Kennedy Meadows and the surrounding areas but it doesn't link right. Try it and see for yourselves how incredible it is.

I did see your comment to him on what you first photo is. Interesting. Did you watch the video? Watching big waves is so mesmerizing.

I'm sure I have more pictures of this area. Somewhere. Do you get to the Sierra much? Aren't you close to the Bishop area? I never got that far, but spent lots of time at Mammoth lakes. It's the Ansel Adams wilderness area. Oh so beautiful!

Love your pictures of the baby elephant.

@snoopydawg
graduated high school I spent a week backpacking in Yosemite(a great experience) but since then I haven't spent any time in the Sierra's. Bishop is about 6 hours north from me. I'm in Santee, just a stones throw east of San Diego.

@Socialprogressive

I went on two backpacking trips from there. We spent two hours putting our food in the tree and it took the Bears two minutes to get to it. So we had to walk out the next day.

Pine Tree is close to Bishop right? Have you been there? Mammoth? If you get the chance to go to Mammoth do. The town is nothing to see, but just 10-15 minutes up the road you are in gawd's country. This is one of the very few pictures I took that turned out. I was using a film camera and went on a long hike to get better views of everything and got one picture and then ran out of film.
I hope you get the chance..

@snoopydawg There is a small town called Big Pine, 15 miles south of Bishop, maybe that is what you are thinking of? I was class of '73 there (high school). Lone Pine which is the gateway to Mt. Whitney is 45 mi. S. of Bishop. The Mammoth Lakes area is spectacular, so are June and Convict Lakes nearby. I have hiked a bit in the central Sierra Nevada, both east and west sides. The east side in particular is as scenic as you can stand it.

Guess I got the names confused. Sure wish I had taken time to go further on 395. I grew up going to Jackson Hole Wyoming for the weekend and thought Mammoth the town would be like that. Big bummer when it looked much like the most of Nevada. But then I drove to the lakes and just wow!

Mammoth and Bodega Bay sang to my soul. I felt so much peace when I went to either place.

Hopefully you will post some photos of the area you grew up with? How lucky for you to be so close to that wilderness. I've spent all but 15 years in Utah and have never been to Bryce or the Grand Canyon. Just not interested in either. Been to Zion and Arches though. But now they are crammed with people that it's no fun.

Great pix Janis. Funny thing how that scale thing is. Final answer for all the dough, the first picture looks like a petri dish with a battle of the bacteria in full swing, seen it many times myself.

Great Band-tailed Pigeon photo Magi! It is a BIG pigeon, and a beauty too.

Love the elephant shots SP. What a neat beast, great pix!

Just when I thought I had seen it all, there is a freakin Santa Mato! Good work B.R.!

I kept that mussel shell because whenever I look at it it reminds me of the cosmos.

I photographed it with the scallop I found on the same beach which was the colour of the full moon rising at the time.

No worries! I found that it can be correctly spelled with either one or two L's. Evidently, in the UK it's not unusual to find it with two L's.

The name came about as I used to travel from northern Kansas to the Gulf of Mexico every seven days due to work. I'd spend a week working, then head back. Those days are long gone, but the handle stuck around ... simply for the sake of convenience.

You may certainly use traveler or traveller, as you wish. My wife knows me as Terry. Smile
