France and UK signed an agreement to be friends on this day in 1904. Seems they bartered their imperial holdings to reach some power arrangements.

question everything

@QMS
but couldn't really think of anything snarky to say or any good music to play to celebrate it. Then too, there's also the question of whether the French thereby bailed on the Irish, but they had been pretty much providing only moral support since 1798 anyway.

With no segue or rationale, just me talking to me (but y'all er welcome ta eavesdrop):

Fred Astaire danced incredibly and played very respectable piano. He was also a good actor, never indicating how klunky he thought some of his dance partners.

Light showers this AM and a rain due later today. Should wash a little of the pollen out of the air.

Often called the Roma or the Romani people, this minority group is also known as gitanos in Spain, as gitan in France, as Tsingani in Central and Eastern Europe, and by several names across Scandinavia that translate as "Travelers." Roma also refer to themselves by various names: Kale in Finland and Portugal, Manush in France, and Sinti in Germany and Eastern Europe.

Historically, in nearly every country where the Roma have lived, they have also been referred to as gypsies, a derogatory term used to describe an ethnic group that has migrated throughout the world over the course of several centuries.

The Roma have one of the most dramatic stories in human history, but few people know their ancient tale of travel, persecution and survival.

@Lookout
music, in one formulation or another, has always been phenomenal. You can barely hear Reyes in this clip, which is perfectly OK because Manitas, but Reyes does some awesome cante flamenco in his own right and especially with Manitas on occasion -

... and then there's this crew, who do absolutely the worlds' best version of "Hasta Siempre" - one you actually can dance to -

Ah, what the hell, here's Jose:

@lotlizard My diet has become almost lacto-ovo vegetarian as I get older (just because). Always experimenting with the food (first level of healthcare) different brands and last 8 years have made my own pet food. The length of live of the dogs has increased 2 years on average and the cats 5 years from commercial food days. Much less arthritis, obesity and illness in general end result, happy energetic lives and much lower vet bills.

One cats eats more meat daily than one Australian Shepherd. The dogs can digest grains better than cats which creates an opportunity to loser their carbon footprint. Each one eats more meat than I do in a month.

Interesting how the life choices we daily make on travel, pets and purchase habits effect the validity of bragging people use for showing their concern regarding global warming.

more cautious than you think necessary. I know that whenever I complete an arduous major task things aren't simply sore, they are out of whack for weeks or months, some joint or another or several telling me "Do Not Do That Again". It gets to be such a drag that I find it better to forego such tasks, or seek assistance rather than to spend so much time semi-helpless as a result.

It is still raining today, meh. Tomorrow the sun is forecast to appear, with wind. Last week was such a seed abbondanza I overdid it. The first ones showed up yesterday, a sunflower in the street dirt, and a bunch of ancient sativa I threw in a jar with leftover potting soil. boing The basil plant on the deck seems very happy in the fresh dirt with the evil vermiculite. Grub or something already chewed on the sunflower downstairs so I put ground egg shells around it for protection. good luck little sprout

Lemon balm, poppy, penstemon, culinary sage, rosemary, spinach, lettuce all germinate. yay spring

OBITUARIES
Richmond Young
AIDS activist
EXAMINER STAFF REPORT
Civic leader Richmond Young, a longtime San Francisco political and AIDS activist, died of complications due to AIDS Saturday at his Castro District home on his 43rd birthday.
Richmond Young was active in both local gay and lesbian politics and Democratic politics on the local and state levels. Mr. Young’s interest in politics was inherited from his mother and began when he served as Northern California coordinator for the Eugene McCarthy for President campaign in 1968.
Since that time he worked tirelessly for both gay and lesbian and Democratic Party candidates. Most recently he was a member of President Clinton’s San Francisco Steering Committee; he was a founding member of the Clinton-Gore Democratic Club. Mr. Young was a Clinton delegate to the 1992 Democratic Convention and also served as a delegate to the California Democratic Council.
He was a member of the California State Democratic Party and earlier this year was District Attorney Arlo Smith’s appointee to the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee.
Mr. Young served for three years as an officer of the Alice B. Taoklas Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club and was president of the Stonewal Gay Democratic Club for three years. He served as a Board of Supervisors’ Commission on Elections and in 1993 Supervisor Angela Alioto appointed him to the HIV Youth Advisory Committee.
“We have lost a spirited leader, a fighter for the underdog and a friend; he made our city a very special place,” Alioto said.
Mr. Young was a longtime member and office of Dignity, an organization composed of and devoted to the needs of gay and lesbian Roman Catholics. Members of Dignity played an important role in his life and he was preceded in death by his godfather and close friend Kevin J. Calegari.
Mr. Young was born in San Francisco and raised and educated in Marin County. He worked for many years as a legal editor at Commerce Clearing House Inc. in San Rafael.
Mr. Young is survived by his partner of almost 13 years, Peter Geiger; by his sisters Patsy Griffin-Young and Elizabeth Young, both of Sonoma County; by his brother, John Young of Lagunitas; close friends Dennis Collins, Bob Kane and Steven Kline, all of San Francisco; by many other relatives, friends and associates; and by his faithful cat, Michael.
A service of remembrance will be was held Sunday, April 23, at 2 pm at Dignity at the Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1329 Seventh Ave., San Francisco. Donations may be made to Dignity in San Francisco or Project Open Hand.

Dignity gave him a Catholic Mass and a local artist sang "San Francisco" for him at the end. All stood and she really belted it out, sending Richie home. He loved that city like it was part of him. His remains inside The Bay just off the north tower of the bridge. We threw flowers from there until 9/11 and then you could not throw flowers from the bridge anymore. of course

Peace & Love

Mine too was able to have a Catholic funeral and his friend sang "memory" from Cats. This song breaks me up every time I hear it.

My brother is also in the Bay. I think I did his close to where you did yours.. I love the idea of visiting him any time I go to the ocean.

Be well.

I actually submitted one of my sightings to a couple of citizen science projects because there were, as of then, no recorded sightings for my exact area at the time of year in question. While not "endangered", they aren't, overall, too common either.

I remember hearing that song playing on the radio as my Father's T-Bird overheated on the way to zoo. Somehow the memory of that song conjures up images of baby goats nipping at legs, learning a new curse word in German, and having to take the bus home when my Father had to drop his car off for repair.

The neural synapses go in weird places when triggered.

Thanks for the OT and the music!
