Good morning good people,

Never did get officials from COMUNE DI SAMBUCA DI SICILIA on the phone, but they did reply to email; then i forgot about it for a few weeks; imagine that, forgetting something.

Anyways, here is a list of properties for sale for improvement. Please help pick out our c99 retreat if yo wish, see promise in numbers, 11, 14 and 10. Smile http://www.comune.sambucadisicilia.ag.it/Case%20a%201%20euro/Immobili%20...

zora and abica content to share the fire; between lickings and belly-scratches.

Friend down in Costa Rica marrying her daughter, a co-owner of Surf Simply; provides a needed get-away for me for a few days. And a chance to do laundry, casually, what a treat that is; i've brought over a ton, we bachelors. Smile

Thought a lot about you folks this week and c99. A special place, no doubts. Cheers, johnny and joe and everyone who contributes!

If you are new to c99, please pull up a chair or set in our porch swing, say 'ello; love to have your company.

And has absolutely got my vote. Of course, if I could live anywhere, I would love to go to a Mediterranean Island, so sign me up on that one. Although I admit that I would prefer a Greek island. Well, I guess technically Sicily counts if you want to count Syracuse.)

Feels great to be able to type again, but I can't overdo it too much. (Learned that last night. Ugh...) Hope to have a good day today, and plan on being out and about for a change.

Some say our back is to the wall, and we only have ten years left, but I remember that exact rhetoric as a teenager, trying to get us to rise up and demand of our elders that systemic change happen NOW. I've found that most of the time, California is the test bed for ideologies to be rolled out nationwide. If folks tell me that NO, this time it's different, I understand how you feel that way, it scared the hell out of me when I first heard this stuff too. Right after the big 94 quake. I'm not accusing anybody of lying, or falsifying data. Hell, I am cutting back on everything I can because I DO believe in climate change.

But the rhetoric is different. It's not trying to convince, it's trying to silence criticism. Find me one Democrat who will agree with banning air travel, and you'll find your honest environmentalist. Find the guy who wants to use the nuclear weapons for reactors to get RID of the stuff, and you'll find an honest environmentalist. There's so many better and more effective ways we could be immediately working on climate change, and instead TPTB want us arguing about how the poor will sacrifice to make it happen.

Frankly, I know what will happen with this "Green New Deal". The exact same thing that will happen with every other Democratic proposal. It'll be rolled back to only the corporate giveaways, then the Liberals will be blamed for "Socialism Doesn't Work". Seen this one far too many times to fall for it again. Time to switch to offense. When are they going to stop using their flights, security details, etc? Let's see some costs and carbon usage. Those computers you write off? I wanna see the environmental costs for using them including rare earth extraction damage calculation as well as human suffering from the slave labor used to dig the metal.

If we're going to do this, Lets get Serious.

perhaps a small cafe/bar on the first floor; possibly a community gathering place plus a place for breakfast for any bnb guests. We could serve free shots of Sambuca in the afternoons and evenings, i can bring fresh Kona coffee beans. Smile

Happy you are on the mend; me to btw, physical therapy seems to be working on the pain, knocking on wood.

The Green new Deal is at best a starting place, thankfully, it's pushing the conversation; need to take the Durbin's and Dianne's out fishing in the wilderness for a few days and persuade, change their corporate minds.

Enjoy getting out, and take care not to lift heavy objects for a while longer.

liked Patmos, too. So many places in the Mediterranean area are enjoyable. South of the US, too, as well as many places in the US.

I love to visit new places, eat local foods of different kinds and have different kinds of experience. I want to eat again in a bistro in Paris, visit the fish market I saw in Jiro Dreams of Sushi, barter in Cairo's Khan Khalili. I want to spend my third spring equinox in Chichen Itza and my first at Stonehenge. And more.

But for my always home, I want a city with plays and concerts and stuff. I want a supermarket that carries everything I am used to using and take for granted when I am home. I want my usual brand of cherry preserves and everything else I enjoy using or eating on a daily basis.

Or maybe I could order whatever I want online anywhere I go? Never tried that. Does Amazon ship to Greek Islands or Sicily? But, then what of the stuff at my local bakeries and delis? Folks, it's all to die for. And theater, in English at home, as well as checking out the amphitheaters in Greece and rome. Yes, even comcast on demand.

No, I would have to be home for most of the year. That would be incredibly embarrassing to admit, even to myself, if I had more shame.

Thanks for the vids, tunes and poetry. A good start to the day. Why is your friend marrying his daughter? Aren't there other girls available? Wink

Just finished reading Bernie's book 'Where We Go From Here'. Would be more descriptive to say finished skimming. Read the intro and first chapters about Hillary and the primary, DNC platform, etc. Huge holes in the story. Jumped to the last chapter which brought the timeline up to 2 months before the midterm elections. It was a painful read (skim). I like his enthusiasm for progressive issues, but the reality of the DNC and dem party are political uglies he glosses over. Wouldn't recommend the book.

Enjoy your doggies and the wood stove!

@smiley7 Ha. I'm not sure what dogs like. I do know with absolute certainty though, one thing our resident dog likes is to have his tummy 'scritched'. That is the extent of my knowledge.

Never worry about a paucity of c99 comments or presence. That is as it must be. We contribute as our abilitiy and time allows, life does get in the way. The fascinating mix of ideas and information that is here makes it a completely worthwhile place but we all have other obligations. No worries.

Here is another piece of after 5 music for you. Will be thinking of you and the doggies. Stay warm and dry and as content as can be.

Oh, and a c99 meet would be wonderful.

tin dipper would have been at "the picture show" or on TV. Such is the fate of a cement dweller. When I was maybe 5, I did pump water at some bungalow on a river somewhere that was communally owned and open to all comers and my family were occasionally among the comers.People were always barbecueing and there was salad and maybe something else and everybody who wanted to eat could eat.

I don't remember my family ever bringing food, though maybe we did. It would be very unlike my parents not to contribute anything and both my parents liked to cook.

Now that I think about it, I wish I knew more about the whole thing, how the deed was held, whose idea it was, etc. The bathrooms reminded me of the "boys' room" and the "girls' room at my elementary school. Why there was running water in the johns and the kitchen, but a pump on the grounds, too.

In a twist of fate, the man who taught me to swim there when I was five became my mother's second husband when I was sixteen.

Life at times can be weirdly wonderful or wonderfully weird or crappy. Just a roll of the dice sometimes and sometimes we can, and do, make our own joy or our own misery. Not exactly original thoughts, but my mind just traveled seven years and two dads in a paragraph, so cut me some slack, jack.

I wish you all a day and a weekend far more coherent than this post.

Well worth repeating, Henry; and flowing conciousness is cool; letting the words go frees the soul, somehow. Hate it when the words don't roll onto the screen.

i have the tin-dipper from Grandma's farm, the one we all grew up with, it's precious to me.

Would enjoy more stories about the bungalow or whatever; funny, your words carried me to Lilaand vivid scenes on the Hudson, Robert Pirsig created in that novel.

and thanks for the OT. Great piece by Nina. Our rain will return in very few days here, so we've been doing what we can outside while it is briefly gone. Farmers' market today, as usual, and my week to cook starts tomorrow, after a quick run to Dry Creek and Healdsburg, so another miniature cycle within the expanding nest of cycles kicks off. Why Sunday, and what is its great holy significance? It's the day after framers' market, of course.

Surgeon said 4 to 6 week rehab, so Wednesday will be either half or 1/3, heh. That's a 50% error bar there, but I guess some of it is up to me. Get up and move, keep moving, but don't lift, pull or push anything heavy. Walk in circles of what? What is heavy anyway, a sheet of 1/2" plywood, bag of potting soil, 5 gallons of H2O? No straight answer on that of course. Anyway, off to get moving. Wink

Take care of yourself.

good-speed; i recall after open heart surgery, instructions were to not lift or carry anything for weeks. Don't recall for other surgeries and cancer, think i got the same instructions as you, don't lift anything heavy; depends on the size of the wine bottle, i guess.

Know you will, but do take care. Celebrating having food on Sundays; works for me. With the exceptions of greens and cabbage grown locally, fresh produce is hard to come by on the mountain; all the grocery chain stores, even the organic stores, ship produce in from other countries during winter. I even asked the organic food market butcher why i should be interested in Australian grass-feed beef which the store was pushing, advertising as something special. After all that shipping, handling and freezing, i don't know how it can be worth the discounted, yet still premium price.

Sending healing vibes and hopes that you two have a wonderful day at market and a wonderful weekend.

Have a leak on the porch I'll have to tend to next week, but so much better than a leak in the house. Road needs to be graded too. So is the nature of the endless chores of upkeep.

So good morning to all, and have a good day!

yours included. Haven't gone to those links as of this writing. Been trying to put some thoughts together, needing time to contemplate; hope to catch up to those good PM's soon.

Yes, have you constructed an ark yet? From the window, i can see, about three hundred yards below, the ski school training area and closet parking lot to the main lodge and the cars keep coming and folks are skiing in the poring rain; El Nino, big time impacts on local weather this winter.

Driveway and farm roads need lots of attention in the mountains, don't they? Glad you got the tractor all good to go a few months ago, assuming of course that's how you grade the path.

Big wheeled wagons have advantages, don't they?

Again, thanks a lot for the PM's, music and all; be back at you in a while.

Hey, especially, is you're sitting Goldens, give those babies a scritch for me, OK? Between Mr M's medical travails, and now Miss K's "puppiness," have a more difficult time than ever dropping in, but, hoping that scenario will improve in the coming months (it should).

We've always planned for her to be a Comfort or Therapy Dog, but, now we're being encouraged--depending on her further development in the next several months--to consider showing her. Time will tell, I suppose. The truth is, once Mr M's fully recovered, more than anything, we want to get the heck outta here! Biggrin

Hey, please let me know if you've spent any time in SA--we're interested in Uruguay, Argentina, and possibly, Ecuador. Initially, since Mr M's been cautioned against moving too far from CONUS, we figure we'll look at returning to our old University stomping grounds in Mexico--to date, in a safe part of the country. (There's no pet quarantine in 3 of the 4 countries we're looking at. Still haven't checked out one.)

Hey, have a wonderful weekend with your furry friends.

It's great to see you in better spirits, and, hopefully, stronger health!

that Miss K is headed to Crufts tomorrow! Biggrin

Seriously, I've been told that she has potential, but, it was also pointed out that she's far too young for anyone to make an accurate assessment of this, yet. For instance, there are many joint/bone problems that plague this breed. Apparently, their hips can't even be accurately evaluated until they're 18-24 months of age, from what I've been told.

Plus, if she winds up with the very, very light colored coat of her European ancestors--called English Creme--her coat color could (and likely would) be treated as a 'fault' under US AKC confirmation guidelines. Which would mean that she could only realistically be shown in Canada, Europe, etc. (Obviously, that's not going to happen, unless she turns out to be "the dog of the century"--highly, unlikely, to say the least! Smile )

Last evening, posted, then pulled, a photo from Breeder, because it was also posted on her 'official' website. We'll be working with her in the months to come, so, the last thing we want to do is to violate any photo permissions/copyright. Unfortunately, the images that we've shot, thus far, (with a cell camera) are either very blurry, or the Pup's eyes are red or white. I've tried to play with the flash, but it doesn't seem to help. Eventually, we hope to be able to get a pic worthy of posting--maybe once she ages a bit, and calms down. Need I say, unless she's asleep, she's in constant motion.

Help

Biggrin

the jury's still out regarding how amenable she'll be to being babysat. In several weeks, she'll be day boarded for the first time, so we'll soon find out how she does with others. (We want her to have all 3 sets of puppies shots, instead of just the first two--which are required.) In all candor, Miss K doesn't have the disposition of 'the B'--meaning, the Springer quality of being "super eager to please." She's good-natured, observant as heck, and, I think, smart. But, she's definitely got an independent streak--at least, at this stage.

tea tree oil from trader joes - maybe they still sell it. one drop in a quarter to half teaspoon of water. stir w finger and then rub on gum where tooth hurts. don't use any stronger because it is not good on the gums. can be applied several times if necessary. tea tree oil is part of my travel pack along with... drum roll...

tiger balm - the red kind, for tonsil/throat problems applied externally and wrapped at night to keep warm, remove balm thoroughly if going outside;
alum (ammonium alum, powdered) - for canker sores;
tinctures of echinacea, oregon grape and myrh/goldenseal - echinacea increases the actions of macrophages if something is coming on and oregon grape root taken with it enhances its effectiveness. myrh increases the activity of soldier cells if you have a cut and want the edges to march towards each other. goldenseal good with;
dry mustard (Colemans) for bronchial problems - use 1/4 t with a T of white flower and mix with hot water to a paste, put in thin cloth and put over bronchies (can burn if too strong), cover to keep warm and leave on for ~15 minutes;
garlic, which you can buy over the counter to be used as an antibiotic (shallots are better but harder to find in a foreign country)- take 1/4 t garlic or 1 t shallots for flu and colds;
hydrogen peroxide for nasty skin infections - to be used externally. eats the skin but kills the infection so I only use it in cases which look urgent otherwise topical neosporin.

I have ended up using all of these at different times. and urine for bee stings if you are in the middle of the wilderness and have nothing else. also works for jelly fish stings...
