What is caucus99percent.com about anyway?
C99 is a nonpartisan open discussion platform. We've all heard that time and time again, but what does that mean?
Well, let me try to dissect its most basic tenet, tolerance.
Definition of "tolerance" according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary
1 : capacity to endure pain or hardship : endurance, fortitude, stamina
>2a : sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's ownb : the act of allowing something : toleration
3 : the allowable deviation from a standard especially : the range of variation permitted in maintaining a specified dimension in machining a piece
4a(1) : the capacity of the body to endure or become less responsive to a substance (such as a drug) or a physiological insult especially with repeated use or exposure developed a tolerance to painkillers also : the immunological state marked by unresponsiveness to a specific antigen
(2) : relative capacity of an organism to grow or thrive when subjected to an unfavorable environmental factor
b : the maximum amount of a pesticide residue that may lawfully remain on or in food
The bolding is mine.
Is it possible to have a civil nonpartisan open discussion board without reverence to tolerance by the participants? Yeah I guess you could but it would depend upon the definition of "civil", wouldn't it?
We are again entering into the political silly season, it's a little less than two years away and yet here we are. In the past, on this board, there has appeared a rift among the members. That rift has basically taken the form of those that believe in working within the current political process and those that believe it is a waste of time. That rift, from my point of view, is unfortunate because it highlights just how difficult it is to bring together those that lean left of the political divide, let alone bringing together the 99% from across the political spectrum. It goes to show how deeply divided we are.
I do agree that both sides of this rift are valid in their beliefs, there are solid points in both camps. But what I don't agree with is the occasional shaming that rears it's head in the discussions. And in the past I've seen it on both sides. My definition of shaming is the denigration of other users because of their political stance. That denigration can be both subtle and overt. Shaming others for their political views is not an act of tolerance. We are here to allow folks the space to believe what they will, and telling or assuming folks are wrong for what they believe is, in effect, the antithesis of this site's prime principle.
So, as we enter into another presidential election cycle, let us please be tolerant of each other. If folks want to vote and work within the system, that's OK. If folks don't want to vote and wish to work outside of the system, that too is OK. What is not OK is telling them, either outright or by innuendo, that their political beliefs are wrong. Be tolerant of each other's beliefs, just accept that they have a different point of view and leave it at that. That's what this space is for.
Let us show that we are different. Please allow adherents of both sides of this issue to believe what they will.
Tolerance. Please.

I always took the name literally
Caucus99% = Solidarity with the working class; F*ck the rich!
At least that's my attitude.
Yeah, that's true...
but that's not the point of this meta essay.
A good reminder, JtC.
Thanks for getting ahead of it. We (myself included) may still require refreshers the further into the election cycle we go, and the more frustrated and impotent we begin to feel.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going take my Purity Pony for a little trot.
Wait for me !!!
Thanks for the reminder jtc.
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
LOL
I don't mind being told I'm wrong.
What I mind is being pushed, niggled, denigrated into being "right". Tolerance is allowing others to be wrong without any resentment or hard feelings. It's like your child who turns 18, and you just have to let them go.

You aren't going to discuss the idea of "repressive tolerance"?
It's not as if it's of some brand-new intellectual coinage y'know.

2 things
First, you posted this on the Community Page not the Front Page. That's cool.
Second, as usual I have missed the turmoil. C99 has always been what you describe for me anyway. I can get snarky and a little off from the left from time to time. Call em like I see them.
Just between you and me...(quiet voice) my wife can't always tolerate me yet here I am always tolerated! Go figure.
Just don't stop. You're doing just fine and so are we!

Thanks for the timely reminder. DO and I have to “agree to disagree” or “acknowledge your point of view”. Keeps the sniping down and hard to believe after 48 years we still have disagreements!

I musta missed it.
For the most part, almost every essay I read (granted, I don't read them all) is tolerated, even when most people disagree with the content. Admittedly, some of the comment threads get a bit heated, but for the most part, people treat each other with respect and a word from the "site Mom" (JtC) usually gets things back on track.
I do agree that things may heat up as we head into the 2020 election cycle. But I certainly don't expect the kind of rancor and bad behavior here that drove me away from TOP. We're better than that.

Kinda wild starting the election season already....
...is it by design to keep the sheeple stirred up? I hope we maintain our usual fact based discussions and observations as we go along. Thanks for nipping the rancor before it starts.
Life is full of irony...I can't tolerate intolerance.

Mixing partisan with non-partisan,
or in this case, democratic party supporters with people against the democratic party is impossible without this tolerance you speak of.
But it won't work for all, something will give. I think the preponderance of Bernie supporters and democratic party supporters, combined with the political situation with Trump in the WH, will weed out those who want nothing to do with the democratic party. It's not far from combining republican party and democratic party supporters on the same blog. I wouldn't call it a "rift" per se, more like competing goals.
Remains to be seen, but just an observation.
