Well, it's 11 - 19.

Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift, look out kid, ...

On this day in history:

1493 – Christopher Columbus landed on the island that would be renamed Puerto Rico. He and his compatriots immediately began the process of total extermination of the Native Taino by a combination of warfare, horrific brutal slavery and disease.

1863 – President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address, a very moving and powerful speech that began:

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Unfortunately, that statement is false, it was then and is now. It had only been 7 years since the last state stopped requiring people to own property in order to vote. And, by people, we mean free white males, nobody else was remotely qualified. Voting rights were but one enormous inequality. I have no idea at what point all jurisdictions permitted women to own property, for example. The 15th amendment was 7 years down the road, and women didn't get the vote for 17 years. It wasn't until 4 years after that that Indians were granted citizenship and the right to vote. .

1998 – The US House of Representatives began impeachment hearings against President Clinton. I will let the most illustrious Professor Izzard put this sorry spectacle into the proper US historical perspective.

Born this day in:

1873 – Elizabeth McCombs, the first woman elected to the Parliament of New Zealand

1888 – José Raúl Capablanca, chess player

1905 – Tommy Dorsey, trombonist, composer, and bandleader

1909 – Peter Drucker, management theory hotshot

1917 – Indira Gandhi, politician

1932 – Eleanor F. Helin, astronomer

1939 – Warren "Pete" Moore, singer, songwriter, and record producer

1943 – Fred Lipsius, saxophonist

1964 – Vincent Herring, saxophonist and flautist

Died this day in:

1785 – Bernard de Bury, harpsichordist and composer

1798 – Wolfe Tone, Irish patriot

1828 – Franz Schubert, pianist and composer

1887 – Emma Lazarus, poet

1915 – Joe Hill, activist, songwriter

Progress and Poverty

(After reading Mr. Henry George's book.)
Oh splendid age when Science lights her lamp
At the brief lightning's momentary flame.
Fixing it steadfast as a star, man's name
Upon the very brow of heaven to stamp,
Launched on a ship whose iron-cuirassed sides
Mock storm and wave. Humanity sails free;
Gayly upon a vast untraveled sea,
O'er pathless wastes, to ports undreamed she rides.
Richer than Cleopatra's barge of gold,
This vessel, manned by demi-gods, with freight
Of priceless marvels. But where yawns the hold
In that deep, reeking hell, what slaves be they
Who feed the ravenous monster, pant and sweat,
Nor know if overhead reign night and day?
Emma Lazarus. edit

interesting wellspring: "(After reading Mr. Henry George's book.)". YOu almost never hear anything about poor old Hank, no doubt because of his obscene heresy that people should own the value they produce themselves.

Happy world toilet day!
http://www.worldtoiletday.info/wtd2018/

Odd how we allow resources like manure to become pollution problems instead of a fertilizer resource. A shitty problem so to speak.
An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (more than 35% of the world’s population)
https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/global/wash_statistics.html

This is a pricey solution - https://homebiogas.com/shop/homebiogas-bio-toilet/
with a long term pay back.

OR less expensive wetland systems like this one -
http://efc.web.unc.edu/2016/09/23/constructed-wetlands-wastewater-treatm...

It is the same story with water supply. Most of the world lacks clean water, but all they need are fairly inexpensive systems. Solar stills for example http://solar-still.com/
Or simple sand filtration http://www.slowsandfilter.org/index.html

As to Puerto Rico, they've been screwed for quite a while now...525 years. I bet the vultures have been circling the island since the hurricane don't you?

Have a good day everybody. It's a lovely one here.

systems do require a lot of "feedstock". The average couple and likely the average family, using all of their bodily waste plus kitchen scraps and yard and garden green waste has trouble producing enough gas for cooking, heating and hot water. They can, of course scrounge feedstock from other sources. One wonders about a small collective using a central system to augment outside sources.

I don't know if it is still the case, but for the longest time municipal treatment plants simply flared their methane prodution. It always seemed to me that it should be possible to sell it to the local utility and thereby defray their operating costs and maybe also lower the cost of municipal gas supply, but I don't know if any such thing has ever been done.

of humanity on this planet is largely one of migration, one of traveling to a better place, following the food sources, following the water sources, and sheltering from the seasonal storms.
Then the "I was here first" crowd or the "I am stronger than you and will take whatever I want" crowd, proclaims new arrivals as immigrants or aliens and so justifies a series of crimes.

We are travelers all, but seem to have forgotten. We all want the same thing which is a beautiful sustainable place to live. If we would make our whole planet as habitable as possible, the necessity for migration would diminish. With all our brainpower this seems to be within the realm of possibility (although many say we have already lost that opportunity) yet we are more intent on destroying this place. I think we are out of choices though and have to embrace Emma Lazarus' idea of world wide welcome. If not we just destroy ourselves with wars over what is left of the resources.

Step one, in my humble opinion, is to recognize our similarities. A subcategory of step one is to care about the children. I think we are more alike than different and a large percentage of us share similar concerns.

@randtntx
hoi polloi perspective are not only artificial, but pointless and purposeless. At the beginning, the EU began to understand this. They serve to protect and enhance the power of the first thieves and greedheads, and benefit nobody else.
