I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna to take this anymore!-- Howard Beal in Network

Buenos dias. Welcome once again. Slightly scattered visions today. Had an IDEA to intelligently address media encouraged ignorance. A brief overview of what passes as local news made me wonder ~~~ is it news as entertainment or entertainment as news? Regardless, the themes seem to bombard a thinking mind with basic, low level insanity. "Why, one would have to be stupid to believe / do that!" And that, and it keeps going further down the rationality scale. So the daily dose of dumb is done.

Network film circa 1976 --

“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be."

Looking at the news reminds me of a fun little novel describing the rulers' reaction to a socialistic push in the past. It Can't Happen Here A Sinclair Lewis story circa 1935. Interesting how both Network and It Can't happen are regarded as satire.

I tune in only for the weather and any announcements about road closures ect. Much of the so called reporting is slanted right and must be taken with a large grain of salt. There is an effort (mostly lawn signs) to boycott the local news from a Sinclair owned station.(channel 6 the CBS affiliate) They have been blatantly airing right wing propaganda editorial pieces. Providing a platform for spewing lies and half truths in an unchecked atmosphere. It all reminds me of how we as children growing up in the 1960's were told of how Soviet people had to "filter" the news they were receiving due to propaganda efforts. How sad infuriating that this has come to pass here in the US. Makes me mad as hell for sure!

Yessir. It is scary to think people actually believe this stuff.

Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon.

The poem inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, in part...
~
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Guess it no longer pertains.

@QMS to stem the rise of imports we decided to create our own huddled masses yearning to be free. We perfected a whole new method for creating homeless and wretched refuse domestically that is the envy of the world, and automated it, saving on labor costs. More millionaires in the US have golden doors than at any other time in history. So, I think you owe the Statue of Liberty an apology.

@Snode had in mind while penning her sonnet, but the symbol of Lady Liberty has changed. The French ideas of democratic independence were noble. They were fighting a repressive monarchy. We now have a repressive oligarchy. My apologies to the green lady. She stands for lost values.

@QMS I am just tired of everyday being a downer. The only humor I can muster these days seems to be dark humor.

Special Report: How Republicans are using immigration to scare voters to the polls

Republicans have poured millions of dollars into advertising that depict illegal immigrants as criminals and vowed enthusiastic support for Trump’s proposed wall at the Mexican border, the Reuters review shows.

This year, 20 percent of pro-Republican ads in congressional races have cited immigration, according to an analysis of broadcast advertising data through Oct. 15.

My 2500 population hometown in Iowa had a great weekly local paper. All the other towns that size did as well.

Now, small cities in Texas (25,000+) have nothing. Small 5 page handouts that are mostly ads and "society news."

Last year I witnessed two events that surely should have been covered. My son and I were at a stoplight when a speeding car and 10 law enforcement vehicles sped past us at a 100 miles an hour and only about a foot from our vehicle. We first viewed the chase about 10 miles west in the opposite lane and said, "wow. A high speed chase. Never seen one before." Apparently they made a u-turn. Very frightening. Couldn't find information about it anywhere, even though it spanned 2 counties.

Then there was the giant train derailment diesel oil spill. The force that arrived for cleanup was like 50 semi trucks with heavy equipment. Looked like we were invaded. They evacuated at least a mile around. Big Big deal. Took days to repair the track. Then, poof . . . it was gone. Heard from the locals that the local gravel company ultimately made a deal to just come and bury it. Very little news. "Train derailment in Malakoff, TX. No one got hurt." That was about it.

About five years ago or so, there was a website around here - Waco based I think- where people could post local news. That was pretty cool, but I can't find it anymore.

I am about to go outside and pitch hay. We have a couple of meadows that produce beautiful hay, but we have no baling equipment. Always made me feel sad to mow it and not use it. However, last month my husband found an inexpensive pull behind device that will pick up hay or leaves. $200. He has been mowing with the tractor, then he pulls this behind the lawnmower with the blade off. At the cost of hay bales it has already paid for itself several times over this past week. Put lots in with the chickens. Ruth Stouting my fruit tree/raised beds. Cardboard down, hay on top and hopefully some manure for the big potato patch in January. Finally, hope to build some more raised beds for late winter planting.

Sorry, but I can't help but mention gardening. That and homeschooling is all I do.

Harvested peanuts a couple of weeks ago. Had just planted a handful of them as a test. They were already sprouted and planted in July. For every seed I got about `15 peanuts, so yeah . . . we'll do this again. Smile

Since I am on a roll . . . I am hoping for a warm November. Why? My tomato plants are loaded with blossoms and tomatoes. They need some warm weather to ripen. This week is warm, but I am thinking about building a simple frame with plastic around them to try to extend the season. So far, this year was a fail for tomatoes.

Hope you all have a great day. Rambling on a bit here as a form of procrastination. Smile Will come back and read more later.

Cheers!

The media is on the Bolsonaro's election in Brazil. All the talking heads are proclaiming the fascists victory. No one is talking about how Lula - the candidate that would have won was imprisoned on trumped up charges...nor how duly elected Dilma was removed under trumped up charges too. Reminds me of the way we wanted to elect Bernie but were denied the option. Something else the media failed to touch.

Local news is a total joke, but they have a good weather model usually worth the watch. Though it is 120 miles or more away, Atlanta provides the local news channel (with our digital TV antenna).

Usually you catch a snippet or two of politics when walking around trade day, but didn't hear a thing today although the election is next week. May be that most of the Georgians have voted? We have no early voting in AL.

Another beautiful day in the neighborhood. Rain due tomorrow night and Thursday. Hope you all have a good one!
