I haven't been to a zoo for eons, but I've heard that the one in SLC has been redone since I went there as a kid. The last one I went to was the SF one and I wasn't impressed.

Hope you had a good visit with your mum.

Love the photo of the clouds with the window framing them. It's cool to look at clouds from their other side.

Took the dawgs for a walk last night and 3 houses down I saw this lil guy sitting on the lawn. I stupidly asked, "is that a fox?" Of course it is, but who expects to see one in their neighborhood?

@snoopydawg

you can be excused for wondering, for a minute, if a fox is what you saw! Wink

Always love the 'bird' photos. Our backyard 'regulars' definitely give us some solace, not that they can fill the void that our 'Sweet B' left. Still, I'm their caretaker, and that's a role that I greatly enjoy.

(Unfortunately, don't have near as many of my 'rabbit buddies' coming around, since they no longer can access the seed/cracked corn ground feeding area. Changed the location, and blocked ground access through the gate door--not that cats can't jump over the fence--to discourage them from picking off our bird buddies.)

Thanks for the help with my emoji-problem last night. And have a nice weekend!

But since egrets are my favorite bird I went with that one. Just so damn cute.

Bollox- was the fox visiting or your parents? This fox is a pet and they got it from someone who raises them. Not sure how I feel about that ..

Magia- I agree that the bird is a she. Precious

Mollie- I think most people would say that just because they don't expect to pass the bushes and see a fox just sitting there. The gal just said, "yup." Like duh! What does it look like silly?

Janis- great song. I wasn't thinking about that when I commented. My favorite part of flying is looking at cloud formations. I always want to walk across them. It's even better when they are full of lightening.

Danny- I agree with you that's a great shot of the talons. Great site for birds. BTW. I saw a woodpecker again today. Red head and face with a brown striped body. Beautiful.

I find it so fascinating to see the clouds and earth from above, and am always checking on the map the areas flown over. My favourite way though to see the landscape is of course close up on land.

I hope all is well with you.

Very much enjoy your bird photos. Feel very fortunate to be in a community with so many wildlife/animal photographers. One reason we loved Alaska so much, was the state'a natural beauty, combined with the abundance of wildlife--very often, just outside our front door!

images, Magiamma! I'm getting to the point that I may try to learn how to use my new cell phone camera (that has a 12 Megapixel camera) when we get a new addition to the family. Especially, since it's been 27 years since we've had a young pup--the last two dogs were adolescents when they were adopted.

Yes! Just jump right in and start taking pics. It's easy, it's digital, it's de loveley, (think that is from an add for DeSoto back in the day) Anyway, it's free to take them and you can delete them if you don't like them. And it's so fun. Daenerys's picture

Not a whole lot of interesting things to see here lately as birds are starting to migrate. Monday we saw five loons on the lake, in various shades of their winter plumage:

I knew they changed color, but never saw it in person before, nor seen them this late in the year. According to the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union web site they don't migrate until late November.
I think our swallows left today or yesterday; I only saw 2-3 of them out flying around today. It sure is quiet when they're gone.
I keep hearing the red-breasted nuthatch once in a while though; apparently we're having an irruption of them now. I hope it sticks around over the winter!

Love the cloud photos Janis. Snoopy, your fox is super cute! I see them here once in a while too; only managed to get a blurry photo of the tail last time I saw one when I had my camera on me.

Cheers!

@dystopian

That they start out as bugs and then wake up with the freedom to fly. Does anyone know their lifespan? I had no idea that birds molted. Why would they molt before winter? Abby starts molting in the spring if I don't keep her cut, but isn't that because animals pile on 'fur, to get them through the winter? Anyone know the answers?

dystopian's picture

@snoopydawg Most butterflies and moths live a single season. A few live two. The silk moths of America only eat as caterpillars, once metamorphosis occurs and they are flying adults, they only mate and die. Often only a month. Mayflies only live a few days after emergence, and do not eat as flying adults. Dragonflies are similar with an aquatic larval stage that is usually a year, but two years for some larger species. Once they emerge as flying adults, they live a couple or few months at most.

Birds molt because the feathers literally wear out. Torn and frayed. No longer being the most amazing insulation, or an airtight airfoil to get lift with. Most birds molt once per year. Most adult birds molt after breeding season, and once per year. Some have supplemental molts in spring to acquire breeding plumage. Many though molt in fall after nesting into a 'winter' plumage that is somewhat dull. This then wears away over the winter to reveal 'summer' (breeding) plumage. Red-winged Blackbird is a good example most can see. Some birds like gulls and eagles have 4 different molts and plumages between juvenile fledging the nest and becoming a full adult, it takes 4-5 years for many large birds. Ten species of gulls may have 40 plumages to learn, and fresh vs. worn may not resemble each other.
