Sunday Open Thread: July 29 is Global Tiger Day
and it is also Setting Orange, Confusion 64, 3184 YOLD
(for you Discordians out there)
World History this day
1148 - This is the official end of the Siege of Damascus and the Second Crusade, even though the whupped crusaders bailed and retreated to Jerusalem on the 28th. Hey, whatever.
1588 - English naval forces under Lord Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake hammered the Spanish Armada under the Duke of Medina Sedona off the coast of Gravelines. Medina Sedona, fwiw, knew zip shit about ships and the sea, whilst Drake was a pirate of reknown.
1921 - Adolf Hitler became leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party.
1950 - The 4 day No Gun Ri Massacre ended when the US Army 7th Cavalry Regiment that was committing it was withdrawn.
1965 - The first 4,000 101st Airborne Division paratroopers arrived in Vietnam
US History this day
1858 - The US and Japan signed the Harris Treaty, a one-sided treaty signed on the deck of a US warship. This is perhaps the classic example of US "gunboat diplomacy"
1914 - The Cape Cod Canal opened.
1932 - US army infantry, cavalry, and 4 tanks under Douglas MacArthur dispersed the remains of the "Bonus Army" of Veterans, their wives and Children from DC and destroyed their temporary dwellings and possessions.
1958 - Ike signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating NASA
Science & Technology this day
1818 - Augustin Fresnel submitted his "Memoir on the Diffraction of Light" which pretty much demolished the oldest argument against the wave theory of light.
1851 - Annibale de Gasparis discovered asteroid 15 Eunomia.
1987 - Maggie and Frank signed an agreement to build the chunnel. Both Bonaparte and Hitler rolled over in their graves
2005 - Astronomers announced their discovery of the dwarf planet Eris. That's ERIS, the goddess of strife and discord, patroness of discordianism and mother of all of the lesser evils! Bwahahaha, just in case you're wondering why everything has gone to hell. Hail Eris!,
2015 - Microsoft released Windows 10. Did I mention that everything has gone to hell?
The Arts this day
1836 - The Arc de Triomphe was inagurated. It is momumental architecture, no doubt, but is it art?

That's really a great, heartwarming song.
Thanks, el.
My pleasure, O'Lind. Good morning and thanks for reading.

Perhaps especially if nobody else sings along. Good morning,
eyo, and thanks for reading.

Sunday
Good morning, enhydra and everybody.
Gorgeous tiger photo!
It was such a relief to see on the weather page just now, low 70s F for today and tomorrow. It has been so hot for too long. Ran around and opened all the windows to get some cool morning air inside.
Hope all is well with everyone.
Mornin', OLinda. Glad the heat is abating. It dropped from
a few days of 90++ down to eighties town to mid-to-high seventies, and we, of course, still find that "hot" because we get so acclimated to sixties. Yet, when it gets to low sixties my wife tells me it's too cold for shorts. Heh.
Enjoy the weather and enjoy the day.

good morning everyone
Nice and cool here in NE Alabama too. I'm running the whole house fan for awhile, and then will shut up the house to hold the cool and keep out the heat. Oddly enough our summer has been mild and wet.
It's tomato time with a table full daily. Making lots of sauce. Hope you are all having a nice summer. I hate to see the fires in CA, Sweden, Greece, and so on and hope none of you have to cope with them.
Have a good one!

Hola, Lookout. Tomatoes, eh? I don't think I've seen tons at
the farmers' markets, and ours haven't been pickable yet. Enjoy them. Enjoy the weather too.
Have a good one.

River Fire is now Mendocino Complex
In case anyone wants to watch us burn. Right after I kibitzed about lacking air support, Huffman twitted about the heavy lift equipment being brought in... the vineyards are full of grapes ya know. Populations are under stress worldwide, why not here. That's the system, no more quotes.

Good luck on this one, eyo. It shouldn't
rip south out of Hopland, I wouldn't think but I'm no expert and one never knows anyway. Try to have a good day.

And also for you Discordians...
New Logos. It's Eris, and she pulls a trick I think nearly any trickster god would be proud of.
And that's really crazy, because I was planning on excluding Eris until this morning when I had a horrible nightmare and realized that she needed to be in this play. Coincidences are really happening with this Piece. (I SWEAR I didn't read your OT until after I posted).
Feeling pretty good in general, although I freak out sometimes about what's going on. However, it's nice to have work, both physical and mental, that I enjoy. The fact that I'm not getting paid for it doesn't matter.

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Heh, you know how she is, you're not really going to see her
coming, and doesn't come when summoned, but when she sees fit. Funny. Glad you're feeling generally good and take care of yorself. Have a great day.

Meet Apricot
She may not be a tiger, but she's fun to play with all the same.
And here's some music. I actually discovered these guys by accident last week while watching old music videos with Beavis and Butt-Head on commentary.

Good morning, Aspie. Apricot appears likely to be a great
source of entertainment. I vaguely remember ours when they were that size. Thanks for reading and have a great day.
