The MIC wins?

Pentagon strips Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria troop numbers from web

An asterisk at the bottom said, “with ongoing operations, any questions concerning DoD personnel strength numbers are deferred to OSD Public Affairs/Joint Chiefs of Staff.”

They also stripped Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan numbers from the previously released September report, with the same disclaimer.

The Defense Department has also now scrubbed years worth of the previous quarterly reports from the website.

You know, while all the distractions are going on, the important things - American lives and treasure - continue to be squandered around the globe for no apparent fucking reason except the continual health and profitability of the good ole MIC.

We were told by a real President in 1961. Alas, no one listened....

Crap.

Remember how they'd never talk about the locations of the battles in WW2 War movies? Same shit.

Whenever the Military treats civilian questions about the troops as intelligence gathering. you know exactly what they're planning.

@thanatokephaloides you know, the ones that always seem to lead insurgent revolutions.

Ghaddafi was a colonel--so was Ollie North. For that matter so was Colonel Sanders. But now we have chicken-shit clogging our arteries.

Don't forget the effing Colonels you know, the ones that always seem to lead insurgent revolutions.

I've actually sung the XTC song replacing "Majors" with "Colonels".

I live in a locality over-run by the latter, so this makes sense..... Wink

their own country and constituents, maintaining a state of affairs where the Pentagon, the so-called intelligence community, and huge swathes of civil society act as if it is normal to do the same.

For the obvious reason, the same phenomenon is even more extreme in Germany.

Americans’ children serving in the U.S. military have been manipulated into serving as Saudi Arabia’s janissaries and as Israel’s golem.

Enough of the 99% need to come together and do something about that, if we are to succeed in reining in the MIC.

@lotlizard This gave them fine tenor or contralto voices to sing over the heads they were lopping off.

Maybe this is why there is so much PTSD.

You have confused harem guards (definitely want them "fixed") with soldiers. Perhaps you were just making a joke, because I don't often catch you out.

Question: Harem guards were generally slaves made into eunuchs so they wouldn't try anything with the harem girls. So were ottoman janissaries eunuchs?

Answer: No. They weren't used as harem guards, they were used as front line shock troops - they (along with the Spahis of the Porte) were the standing army element of the Ottoman army, and were the elite of the Ottoman military. They were as good as any other troops anywhere else at the time, until a decline in standards of recruitment and discipline (for example, allowing them to marry and have families) from about 1600 onwards began to make them less effective as field troops.

Actually, allowing the yeni cheri or Janissaries to marry wasn't the principal problem. The principal problem was that no Muslim-born boy could be a Janissary. Only non-volunteers from Greek Christian families qualified. As the generations passed, fewer and fewer of these families existed as most folks living under Turkish rule became Muslims. So their effectiveness failed because their numbers shrank. The legalization of marriage, necessary for opening the ranks to birthright Muslims, was more an effect than a cause of the problem; the Sultans were trying to keep the Janissaries alive as a military formation by way of Muslim recruitment.
