Friday Night Photos - unauthorized version
Hi all,
I can't 'host', as I will be in an out, and have no freakin' clue about how this is supposed to work, but since I don't see a thread up, figured I put a place maybe where some could toss some pix. Since I like seeing everyone's photos so much... So just have at it and I apologize if I am stepping on a foot... Here's a couple to get it going...
Little Yellow - ventral on the right two, dorsal on left individual, puddling as it is known, spray water on dirt to attract butterflies. We keep a small muddy area, it is magic.
Black-and-white warbler - Audubon called it Black-and-white Treecreeping Warbler, as they
act like Nuthatches, they are a bark specialist.
Many birds sun, seeming to go into a trance nearly. It may be to heat up and kill mites. This is a female Cardinal sunning.
If you see one of these keep your eyes peeled for a coyote with a box that says ACME.
Male Painted Bunting, one of the prettiest birds in America
Hope I don't get in trouble for this... I have regretted hitting send before...
Thanks for all the great posts all week to everyone, especially JS's EB, and GJ's news.

hope this is ok to do!
Hopefully some of y'all will save me and put some pix up so I dont get in trouble...
Or is this how you get 'volunteers' here?

thanks for posting...
this being a holiday week, i presume the usual suspects who post this diary are resting and relaxing.
here are a few of my older photos to help things move along...
GREAT butterflies!
Outstanding butterfly photos JS! Do you know which Fritillary the first one is? One of the Lesser Frits methinks. I'd have to get out the books, I never lived where they were common and there are a bunch of them. Then maybe an Eastern Comma or Questionmark, and the Common Buckeye is a beauty. Great work! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for Friday Night Potos tonight, dystopian.
Very nice selection of birds.
Here are some shots from a recent trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Wonderful photos SP
Wonderful photos SP! I love yer resolution! I think the green Macaw is a Military, which is found into N. Mexico, and the bottom macaw is a Hyacinth, big money big bird. That Ring-tailed Lemur is a neat animal. I don't know the other bird, some foreign job.
Thanks for posting! GREAT pix as always!

Thank you, dystopian.
You are correct on the ID of both Macaws. I love the Lemurs. They're fun to watch when they're active. The Bald Eagle is a rescue that can no longer fly.

Nicely done
Thanks for hosting tonight. Love the photo of the roadrunner. Meep-Meep.
I stayed in the cabin at the bottom left in 1989. There was a full moon and high tides that weekend. The cabins are north of San Francisco close to Stinson beach.
This was just a few days before the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco. Game 3 of the World Series was just about to start when it did. I lived 90 miles to the east from it and felt it. Rocked and rolled for about 15-20 minutes.
Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?

At Lake Matheson, Victoria BC
At the lake outside Victoria BC last week-end. I love the colours of the arbutus tree. This tree is found everywhere near water.
My grandson testing the water. He did go in. The advantage of a 200mm lens is that you can be back in the woods taking photos of the lake and family and people don't realize you are taking their picture.
Dystopian: Great job on this essay, love your photos.

thanks!
Distant candids are good... I liked zoom lenses for that flexibility, I shoot birds to beetles and it hard to do both well with the same lens. Generally zooms do no have the resolution of fixed focal lenth lenses. But you get to shoot from afar, and closeup.

@dystopian
Yes, it's Madrone. When the smooth reddish bark peels it reveals an lemon/green bark.
A wonderful tree. It's protected here if the trunk is 8" in diameter or more.

Hi Marilyn
We were so close in location at the same time. I was a little more north and west of you. It was my first visit to Vancouver Island, and a place I very much wish to return to. It had a very familiar feeling to me of where I live, almost like its northern counterpart.
@janis b
Janis!! did I miss you? Are you still on the island? If so "come on down."
Imagine you coming all that way to Vancouver Island. It is a wonderland here isn't it? You can see why I returned here after living in Montreal most of my adult life.
You can email me. I'll post my email address in my profile.
To thine own self be true.
Wonderful images - especially the tree-creeping warbler.
And thanks for the advice for attracting butterflies.
If these are your photos I would welcome hundreds more
Yes on Varied Thrush, and thank you!
www.xeno-canto.org and in the search bar type Varied Thrush. When the list comes up, click the file# number at right of screen. That file will come up, click play on the video/sound window, and have a hear. One of the most awesome North American bird calls and songs. In a foggy ferny redwood forest it is hard to beat. Easily imitated by humming while whistling, I had interesting conversations with several.
For those that don't know about Varied Thrush... sure they are drop dead fancy gorgeous, but really, ya gotta hear one. Go toWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Such a shy Fox-sparrow-like way of investigating things
Not the best resolution
But shot on December 11th in Vancouver, Wa.
Note the christmas ornament.
Thanks for the post. Great photos.

Thank you dystopian for covering Friday Photography,
and for your sweet photos and knowledge. Help is always welcome.
