She might need that to recover and relax. Because when she comes tomorrow to Mr. Drummer, he will beat her hard and will dress her down and lead her to the backyard shack. Compare the differences in body language of a seductive Frenchman and a down to earth German Mutti. Don't expect kisses, hugs or anything of that kind. That's the expertise of the French. German Mutti will just throw an evil look at the Drummer when he does something not nice. If Merkel gets treated badly by the Drummer, I hope she ignores that completely and does her little sarcasm smiles to dress him down the Merkel way. I hope she stands strong and doesn't cave. I wished ... but it's a pipe-dream.

Among many other issues, this I mentioned to Big Al months ago, defending her. I consider it "telling" for both sides different humanitarian values:

Nowhere is the contrast between Germany under Angela Merkel and the US under Trump starker than on the issue of migrants and refugees. Whereas the populist president campaigned on a promise to build a wall between the US and Mexico to keep out illegal aliens, the centrist chancellor adopted a welcoming policy to the refugee "crisis" of 2015-16.

Shortly after his election victory, Trump told Germany's "Bild" newspaper that Merkel had made "a catastrophic mistake by letting all these illegals into the country." For her part, Merkel has said that a wall on America's southern border would "not solve the problem" of illegal immigration.

oh, yeah, I am already bored just thinking about all the things that won't be done right. Sigh.

Report: Vacation Rentals Impact on Maui

A recent report by the Hawai‘i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice states that vacation rental units (VRU) put pressure on Hawaiʻi’s already-stressed housing market by reducing homes for Hawai‘i residents and driving up rents.

The report adds that 1 in 7 housing units on Maui is a vacation rental unit. In Lahaina, it is 1 in 3.

“With almost 9,000 estimated VRUs taking up 13.6% of its housing stock, Maui is an example of unfettered VRU proliferation. Maui is an example of what the state of Hawaiʻi could become if we do not enact stricter regulations,” the report states.

Hawaiʻi’s housing costs are among the highest in the nation with workers earning the lowest wages in the country after accounting for cost of living.

Data from the report shows that:

43% of Hawai‘i residents are renters, the fourth highest percentage in the nation

Rent is more expensive in Hawai‘i than any other state

In recent years, rents have been increasing at more than twice the rate of wages

Hawai‘i has the highest rate of homelessness in the nation

In 2016, almost 13% of homeless services clients came from homes they were unable to retain

60% of condos and 52% of homes on Maui are sold to nonresident buyers.

66% of nonresidents who own Maui property report renting out their units.

Only 16.7% of these owners choose to rent to residents only.

Maui has the highest percentage of residential units being used as VRUs in the state.

Approximately 9,000 vacation rental units are active on Maui, only 223 are legal

A 2015 study by Honolulu’s Office of Community Services indicated that at 80% occupancy, the average Airbnb unit would bring in about 3.5 times more revenue than a long-term rental.

In 2016, 20% of Hawai‘i’s households were crowded (a household has more than two people per bedroom) or doubled up (where multiple households live in a single home).

The Appleseed report adds, “Unless Hawai‘i takes action against illegal VRUs, their numbers will continue to rise as investors convert more homes built for residents into vacation rentals for visitors. Home prices and rents will rise, and Hawai‘i’s families, communities, and economy will suffer.”

many worshipped here as a damn fine automobile (which it is), many a Mercedes Benz were your basic cab, there in Germany. Get in one of those and they'd shake, rattle and roll just like any basic Chevy here. This, I thought to myself, people were spending $15, $20,000 on? ('70s). Wow. But I give them credit. They took a lickin' and kept on tickin'. Cobblestone, beat up roads... they did ok. And could be had there for half what we paid here. Add $1,500 for shipping and you're still saving $7, $8,000! Today, more like $15,000.

imho, if you drive a Mercedes, your brain tools got a little

mixed up and if you drive a BMW, you are a unsocial show-off, if you drive an Audi, you try to hide that you are a show-off, but everybody knows, you are. So, to get that cleared out of the way.

All these cars are way too expensive, complicated and superfluous with an electronic that drives any sane person nuts. They have the worst buttons labels there are. It's a pain to find the right button to do the right things. For every thing the car starts beeping, reminding you that you are a dummy, its electronics is always right and much smarter than you are. And don't dare you go to a Mercedes service station and get something minor fixed. You need to get a loan to pay for it. They are what we call an "Apotheke" (which is the word for Pharmacy) and charge the last penny out of your piggy bank.

Even the Volkswagen is too uppity these days. The only reasonable car to drive in Germany is a Ford, a Kia or a used old Volkswagen. So far, I have only the money to buy a tag and no place to park it legally.

In my best German accent and with pride and my head up high, I announce myself as a fine resisting car buyer in Germany and use our excellent public transportation system.

Oh, and Porsche, that's for addicted gamblers. I don't even start looking at those. /s

Price list for Mercedes Car models One Euro is $1.23 these days. I don't think you get anything under $30,000.00 these days. Total waste of money.
I always get angry watching all those police cars being either Mercedes or BMWs in our TV crime series. What is left to bribe with them?

Ahhhh, Pee Wee Crayton

. . . from that era when the United States was culturally ascendant . . . and had every valid reason to be. The age of jump blues-turning-into-rock-and-roll. I LOVE IT!!!

Think about it: The late 1940s and the 1950s (which were before my time) had the following American popular artists recording and turning out some of the best work or their careers in their respective genres: B.B. King, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, T-Bone Walker, Elmore James, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, Howlin' Wolf, Sinatra and his Capitol Records recordings, Dino, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, Little Richard, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Johnny Cash. (And I'm sure I've left out many others who were also worthy of mention.)

But all cultures/civilizations have their peaks . . . and their inevitable declines.
