WTF, NYT? Perpetuating the "BernieBro" lie 2 years later

My grandfather, who passed away last year, was a lifelong and thorough reader of the New York Times. You might say he was their core demographic: A quintessential New York Jew lawyer, one of the first Jews to be admitted to Harvard, whose life was oddly spared by the Red Scare inasmuch as when he was in the Army and the Korean War broke out, his affiliation in his younger days with certain left-wing groups caused the brass to deem him too much of a security risk to send overseas. He once described himself as a "sociable socialist." I wonder what he'd say if I could show him this:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/05/us/politics/bernie-sanders-obama-miss...

If any 2020 coalition of Sanders voters was as monochromatic as his supporters in the last campaign, he would find it nearly impossible to win the Democratic nomination, especially given the abundance of party leaders expected to run who could raid his political base of white progressives.

Dude. This has been addressed.

At the top of the wreck'd list: For starters, Bernie...Say his fu*king name!

Barack Hussein Obama is the duly elected and reelected 44th President of the United States of America.

Say his fuc*ing name, Bernie— President Barack Obama!

President Obama earned that honorific for the remainder of his life.

And it sounds quite Jim Crow-ish when you don’t say it.

You know what this reminds me of? Fox News with their "say 'islamic terrorism'" bit.

I didn't realize that the useless empty suit known as Obama deserved such respect.

I have to say that it is amazing how much dailykos has increased sexist and racist tensions among at least its audience. The dailykos blog has produced the opposite from what it had claimed in the beginning to stand for. I don't see in what way dailykos has improved the conditions for Latinos, African-Americans and women. I do not see any progress, only more of what they claim to fight against, ie I see it has been regressive.

@gjohnsit I think none of the formers should be referred to or addressed as President So and So. They are supposed to go back into private life after their terms end. They should perhaps be respectfully addressed as Mr. So and So rather than by first name, and referred to as former President So and So. The USA is not a monarchy and we don't have royalty here.

Senator Sanders, and I still love the guy, could and should have been president but he blew it. He underestimated the depths and lengths to which Mme. Killary would go; he failed to exercise due diligence over his own campaign to expose and dismiss DNC plants; and, most important, he still to this day, IMHO, does not understand that American public opinion has decisively turned against the alliance with Israel.

I don't think a recalibration is necessary. There are fixed guideposts that tell us everything we need to know about America's political future. This is one example, and I believe it accurately infers the 2018 and 2020 outcomes and beyond, until the collapse, regardless of who the candidates are:

Despite former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s loss to alleged sexual assailant and former game show host Donald Trump in November, top Democratic thought leaders continue to peddle the “Bernie Bro” myth to major media outlets. Markos Moulitsas — publisher of liberal blogging site Daily Kos — insisted to the Huffington Post’s Ryan Grim last week that Bernie Sanders supporters were overwhelmingly white and male:

“We remained steadfastly focused on the bigger picture, the Democratic Party picture. Again, less sexy, less excitement, but Clinton wasn’t Joe Lieberman and she was running on the most liberal platform in party history. We saw little reason to further divide our party,” Moulitsas said, when asked about why his site didn’t endorse Sanders despite 60 percent of its users supporting Sanders over Clinton. “Not to mention, given the decidedly white complexion of the Sanders coalition, it made little sense to hitch our wagon to a person who had such difficulties attracting the party’s key growth demographics — Latinos, African-Americans and women. In other words, we were focused on the future.”

They are not the market makers of the future.
They are the products being sold.

@Pluto's Republic That explains a lot. " Latinos, African-Americans and women." not the
"decidedly white complexion of the Sanders coalition". More and better democrats, within a certain criteria. Got it. That explains the instant backlash so many posters experienced.

Bernie-hate fest was in full swing at the Meese pond today. They thought that Jane & Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard, Nina Turner, Nomiki Konst should all be in prison for treason. Treason for going up against Clinton machine which tried to smear Bernie as a NRA darling, misogynist, and a racist ? That's rich.

Of course, Bernie called out the weaknesses of the Dem Party that have already been reported elsewhere, see Donna Brazile. Forget the context of the event which was an invitation of a socialist black mayor in the deep south. You can hardly get anyone from the Establishment Dems to go into Trump country to discuss economic justice. That would be too much effort for donors to support.

I had only read brief reviews about his paper in Salon: "Thomas Piketty says Bernie Sanders’ electoral strategy is the way to beat back the right" and in the Rolling Stone: "Is the two-party system doomed?"

So, I downloaded Piketty's PDF and waded into it. Piketty is adroit in using the academic context of the never-ending preface to lift the hood on the mind of the Reader and locate unique cultural or personal variables to lock on to. His meaning can come in a rush of reflection. Not that it is obscure. In fact, the object of Piketty's monograph is so familiar and ubiquitous that we forget how to differentiate it from everyday reality. And suddenly, it stands out in stark outline, along with the baggage it carries.

...It's Impressive to see much of my internal political algorithm expressed in math. Not joking. I could follow the math because I knew the word problem.

Oh yeah. I know that feeling. I can see, too, why it resonates for you. It does for me.

These are things we already knew — perhaps better than most since we respect the sovereignty of unallocated evidence (effects with no apparent cause, yet). But I do think it takes a certain amount of time to "believe in" the inevitable consequences of "history in the making," even when we are well aware that certain events unfolding in real time will trigger a reckoning in the future. Beyond interpreting what has happened and why, Piketty also confirms that what we saw then was the real deal. Even if our observations were denied or dismissed by the variety of fools bleating the propaganda narrative.

I found the comments at both links, above, revealing about the general state of things. The establishment elite appear as zombies, now. Walking dead. They must feel this. I would.

@The Voice In the Wilderness
they were dominated by conservative southern evangelicals . The conservatives who run the D party are happy to promulgate the lie that the right wing D-voting blacks of the south are representative of the aggregate national population of blacks. The truth is that a large fraction (I'd guess a majority) of the African American south votes D only because the Republicans are so transparently -- even overtly -- racist, not because they prefer a liberal political agenda.
The HRC campaign successfully portrayed her relative strength among southern blacks as a nationwide phenomenon, but it wasn't, not ever. Her support amongst blacks in the north, and especially in the midwest, was tenuous at best, and it ultimately cost her the White House. She lost the election because she didn't turn out enough of the African American vote in Wisconsin and Michigan. In Wisconsin, it was all about Milwaukee, and they didn't give two fucks for HRC. Meanwhile, she enjoyed a small boost from Republican women all across the country, who then voted R on the downballot, crushing the Dems at the state and congressional elections. Thanks, Hil. You're a peach.

The democrats did lose 1,000 seats during his tenure, Correct? People did give him a pass for his drones, his upping troop levels in Afghanistan, his expansion of the war of terror and especially his regime change in Libya. Then they gave Hillary the same pass for her role in Libya.

Quick. What was the best piece of economic legislation passed during Obama's tenure? The ACA that saw people's insurance premiums go up or was it Lily Ledbetter? What did Obama do that made our lives better?

But the fact that his only mention of Mr. Obama was in reference to Democratic defeats, particularly during an event honoring Dr. King in a heavily black Deep South capital with a painful racial history, struck some critics as tone-deaf and even insensitive.

This is B.S!

“The real question is why it happened and it’s no secret: Everybody underestimated the backlash that would come to the first African-American president,” he said.

This is why Obama couldn't do anything? Because people were still racist? Bull. Pucky. Besides I thought it was because the mean republicans wouldn't let him be president. Oh wait. Maybe it was because he was afraid of the CIA doing to him what they did to MLK? Pick any excuse for why he was the president that could have been.

Mentioning again that people say that he left office scandal free. Not in my book. That Donald F*cking Trump following his presidency is a direct reflection on his tenure. How people can't see that is .......
