Tim Canova Denied Access To Florida's VAN

Ever since Tim Canova announced he'd be running a primary race against Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, I've been following his statements, the occasional post on DKos (which reminds me, someone needs to invite him over here as well if that hasn't been done already), and contributing to his campaign when I have an extra $20 on a downticket race. I haven't seen this posted here yet, and I haven't checked GOS either, so here goes. I got this email this morning from the Canova campaign:

Dear Steve,

Last week, I called the Florida Democratic Party to request access to the voter file database and software known as VAN that is routinely used by Democratic candidates across the country.

I was told that our campaign would be denied access to this database because I am running against an incumbent Democrat, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. I was also told that any Democratic candidate running against an incumbent Democrat would be denied access — even a lifelong progressive challenging an out-of-touch incumbent.

This is unfair and undemocratic. My opponent already has untold advantages against an insurgent progressive campaign like ours. We are refusing to take corporate money, while she has taken millions of dollars from Wall Street bankers, payday lenders, private prison companies, and other corporate special interests. How much more of an advantage does Wasserman Schultz need to silence the voices of grassroots voters in our district?

It goes on a bit, but if you're supporting Canova, you likely received the same email.

My question is simple: Has it always been standard practice of the DNC to shut out access to the voter registration software in a primary with an incumbent candidate? Any answers would be helpful, since I can't find any historical evidence to this on the Googlez.

Cheers

She cheats, lies, steals and betrays. She needs to be booted back to private life and denied any further access to the levers of power.

I just want to know if it's SOP for us (Democrats) to shut out access to voter information in a primary with an incumbent before I throw a clip of word bullets in the laptop and go all gonzo on it.

That's just bullshit. I should make a batch of shirts that read "Who Needs Democracy When You've Got DNC?"

Are there good reasons for this SOP?

for them to tell you why. I assume at that point it becomes pretty self-evident. Smile

This type of policy would have maybe helped protect some of the more sane GOP reps against Tea Party crazies, (or maybe they have the same policy - I don't know) but it seems to presuppose (for the DNC) that the incumbent is a progressive and competent and thus deserving of continued office, and this is not always the case - certainly not in DWS' case - she is a scourge on the party.

I guess I can see why it was put in place, but its quite obviously self-serving. There is nothing to say any incumbent is a better candidate than a challenger.

Nothing against the actress. Pam Ferris is incredible, and can portray evil VERY well.

Sanders should be thinking along the same lines. Develop his own system from accessible info.

Tim Canova needs all the support he can get on this one. The other day he said that the 23rd district was one of the more liberal bastions in Florida, so a good ground game could make the difference.

for this very reason. It would be nice if he could report a huge fundraising # off this event, since there seems to be little else he can do against DWS.
