Sunday Open Thread 3-29-15
Sunday has always been special.
We religiously follow our Sunday ritual and go out for a diner breakfast. We are diner people. The upscale crowd can have their bistros, I am more comfortable at the diner. At the diner, you can put your elbows on the table/counter and talk to your companions, talk to neighboring diners, sip coffee with a newspaper and enjoy some comfort food.
During early adulthood, I would head out for Saturday night.

Moving south was tough, bakeries, delis and diners, just are not as common as they are in the rust belt.
It took awhile to settle into the NC culinary scene, but we finally were blessed with a home town diner. A trained chef moved down from New York City and opened this funky place in a little strip shopping plaza. Pastries are his thing. The banana cream filled doughnut with toasted coconut icing is worth the three Hail Mary's for not going to church.

New Orleans means a trip to Camelia Grill, my favorite diner.

Tim and 99percenters. Thanks for another great Open Thread. I was going to write a diary to do this but doing it here works just as well. The Open Threads for all next week are open except for Wednesday if you'd like to do one or more. The days are Monday through Sunday. Let me know here in this thread and I'll update the list below. I'm working on a calender that will have it's own page that can be filled in day by day by whoever wants to volunteer, I'll try to have that done by next weekend. We are putting in a VIM zero threshold system. Zero threshold refers to non lip or ridge between the bathroom floor and shower floor. It should be a tremendous help with shower transfers.

Tile and bathroom fixtures are ordered. I need to mix in doctors appointments and picking a granite counter top. The counter top gets paired with an under mount, rear drain, sink. The vanity has doors that swing out and slide back along the walls. In tandem with the rear drain it facilitates driving up to the sink with an electric wheelchair. We are putting in a comfort height throne with wash and dry cycles.
Taking Sweetie out to run errands is very time consuming. Getting into and out of the car is an ordeal. We are getting savvy about accessibility.
When the project kicks off, I will have to take Sweetie to the YMCA to shower. She is not real keen on the idea, but the family locker room has handicapped accessible showers.

two predictions that have started to happen
I don't make a lot of predictions
for example, I am not predicting the failure of the neo liberal economics in the US or around the globe - at least not any time soon
i listened to an hour speech by Allison Weir about 1 1/2 years ago on I/P. She is the activist, not the author. I found out about the Zionist project formulated in the late 1800's that included the model of colonial powers. The Zionist project has been used for decades to enact genocide on the indigenous people who lived there for thousands of years. My prediction was that the latest Gaza genocide would be the end of Israel as it has been. And I have been an avid follower of Max Blumenthal whose new book on the Gaza war will be out in a few months. There has been a sea change of support and when the US stops holding back the global tide, Israel will have to change.
My other prediction was that dailykos could no longer be an apologist for the democratic party and to shout down anyone who criticized Obama
This is happening as we speak. The TPP could be the turning point and the backlog of Obama and democratic failures are adding up. Gulfgal98's diary on the attack on OWS is a case in point. And the ongoing diaries of bobswern, gjohnsis, and the Evening Blues of Joe Shikspack are an example of the push back and the inability to put forth a coherent support for the dem party. Prediction 1: It is true the US is holding back the tide. I think for the near future it rests with the Obama administration and whether it holds it's ground in regards to the Iranian negotiations or if it caves in to the pressure. in the long run I think you are spot on.
Prediction 2: We shall see what happens when Hillary declares, I'm not holding my breath though.

Diners are great,
but as a vegetarian, I've always favored the 'cafeteria' chains like Morrison's in the South, and Luby's which I believe are primarily located in the South or Southwest (they may be everywhere).
Lowbrow or not,
For some reason, the quality of cafeteria food seems to be slightly above the restaurant chains which sell buffet meals--like Golden Coral. (Of course, cafeterias tend to be a bit more expensive.)
Hope you have wonderful weather for the ALS walk, and that you raise a lot of money. Also, that your renovation goes smoothly and quickly.

Diner just off 15/501
Hi Tim,
Is that fantastic soul food diner still going; located off the bypass on the left; can't recall the cross street, but many blocks north of the Duke's north campus' route heading northwest ... I do remember a Sears store with a sears tire center on the right before you reach the bypass to Oxford. Amazingly good food at reasonable prices.
