Openly Eccentric - Open Thread 3/13/2016
Good Morning to all, on today's Open Thread.
First off I want to thank JTC for the opportunity to have one of the Open Threads here at C99. I know that I'm one of the Junior Members here, at least as far as sheer chronology goes, so the chance to write on a regular basis for a site I love is a real treat.
As far as what I'll be discussing, I'll leave that up to the day and what strikes me as interesting. For those who don't know me, I started posting over at TOP almost ten years ago, when I was in a weird relationship, and had lots of other strange things going on. In my blogging career, I've gone through a divorce, children, Army service, disability, Homelessness, and a bunch of other things that all fall under that nebulous category of "Life Experience". It's been a wild and bumpy ride, and I'm glad to be able to share what slivers of knowledge that school of life has granted me.
I also tend to ramble, and not get to the point right away, so thanks for sticking with me this far.
Normally I wouldn't mention the Gold Plated Toilet man, but he has decided to declare open war on folks who don't support him. Yeah, I know. Apparently, rather than deal with the violence that his supporters have perpetrated on protesters, he has decided to declare active hostile rhetoric and claim he's being attacked. Of course that's straight out of a certain playbook... It's times like this I really want to say thanks to Godwin. Not for the rule which has been abused, but for saving the power of Nazi until it truly applies.
Oh, and remember that whole thing about realizing that Nuclear Power was awful? Well, looks like that was just a passing fad. Looks like Nukes are back at work. I'm starting to wonder if anybody ever really thinks about the long term consequences of fragile power plants that, when broken, poison EVERYTHING around them for centuries.
And here's something kinda funny. Apparently China is starting to get the idea that the 1% should tone down the flaunting of wealth. Yeah, apparently the corrupt officials that have the cash aren't spending it anymore because they're getting caught being... corrupt. Starting to think that we can probably do something similar in this country with the customer list at Saks...
Remember when Australia had a problem with guns? They immediately set up national standards to solve the problem, and it went away? Well, apparently they are having a problem, like the U.S., with crappy social workers who aren't doing their jobs properly. So, Australia decides to solve this problem by... REGISTERING social workers. Holy Crap, right? Who would have thought that a National Solution to a problem that is national in scope might be the right idea, rather than relying on the local groups to solve their own problems. Ok, that one's a bit bitter in my mouth, because of the Abuse that my children personally suffered in Foster Care, which was ignored with a hand-wave and a "We looked into it."
I must admit that I'm a bit younger than most of the folks here, so as a result my musical tastes are a bit different. So with that in mind, I figured I'd finish off my first open thread here with a bit of fun music that's to my taste. I have a lot of sympathy and love for strange combinations of music, as well as contemporary takes on old styles. So I figured I'd bring up a few of my favorites, as a way to help folks get to know me a little better.
First off, some Pirate Metal. Yup, my current obsession is for folk metal that uses the hollywood interpretation of pirates for some FUN music...

Thanks for sticking with me this long, and I hope next time to be a bit more interesting in my Open Thread. To be honest, this is a proof of concept for trying out something I've never really tried before. Enjoy your discussions below, and I hope to join you when I finally wake up. (It's SUNDAY, c'mon, I can't be expected to jump out of bed at six, right?)

Morning Gerrit...
I did get a good night sleep. After I put the site in maintenance mode, it took about an hour to prepare for site the migration, started the migration process and then went to bed. Got up this morning and reversed the maintenance mode process and here we are.
Our web host did the migration and I got to sleep!
That's very cool!

Yo, JtC! This site's now 'fast as lightening!' Yeah!!!
And that's really helpful to me--and probably other folks like me--since I'm mostly using a Wi-Fi connection (supposedly high speed, but I wonder sometimes).
Also, logged in today without any error messages.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! (This is even better than I expected.)

I agree. Very fast
Before the new servers I couldn't read c99 in the am because it crashed my old broken computer. So I missed out on the open threads.
Thanks for all your hard work getting this site working so well.
And it is faster than kos's site on my computer. And that is a good thing

Sometimes they can be just as propagandist, but I find the different perspective helps lend them an air free of the spin du jour.

Morning dmw...
thanks a million for taking the Sunday Open Thread, that opens up a lot of time for me. It's very much appreciated, my friend.
Glad to do it.
I hope it helps build a better site for all of us.

Okay, I tried your music...
I am too old. Oh well, on to other subjects. Nukes! What a monumentally bad idea. Yes, plants break, and they leak. Sometimes catastrophically. But what happens when everything works right? In the best possible nuke situation, thousands of Navajos get cancer and die...miles of their land get dug up into open wounds that are permanently useless. The wind blows the dust east to...whoever lives downwind. (I fly for a living...I see the open sores...when it gets a light snowfall, I see the plumes of dust painted across the snow.) The hottest stuff gets turned into weapons. Weapons that can theoretically destroy the Earth several times over. Good deal. But, to make "enriched" uranium, you must by definition end up with a pile of "depleted" uranium. Well, you can't leave that shit sitting around; it's hazardous, and there is only so much room. How about we make armor out of it! And then, to complete the circle, armor piercing weapons! Win win! Then, you have the middle stuff. Lets put it in a giant sealed concrete box...but then it needs lots of cooling, so we better put it near a major water source. How about an island in a river? Or maybe on the ocean, near a major fault? (San Onofre is my favorite, because it makes some really nice waves poisonous. Keeps the crowds down. Waves, man.) Then you need plumbing to run the water into the box. But this stuff is corrosive! Not to mention really hot. And Joe the Plumber doesn't want to fuck with it...so it inevitably leaks. But only enough to slightly raise the level of "background radiation", you know, that normal amount that has always been there? Ensuring that your grandkids will have a higher incidence of cancer than you do. Then, at some point, the shit is used up...for fuel purposes, anyway. The leftover is only dangerous for another 10,000 years or so, so lets put it in a steel drum full of water, and stick it in a building somewhere, and put a big fence around it. That ought to do it. What could possibly go wrong? Yeah...CLEAN Energy, Baby.
I think I'll give that music another try.

I figure I'm doing better than the vast majority of corporate radio stations.
And yeah, Nuclear power... oy. About the ONLY place I can see it working as a power source is in space, and as FAR from civilization as possible. At least there you have a huge vacuum and an atmosphere/magnetosphere between the poison and any living things. (I admit that I still have my space program biases from when I was a kid, but I've GREATLY rethought them with the track record of nuclear power. Yeah, the odds are much lower than some other sources, but the eff up when it breaks... And it WILL break eventually...)
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I'd just hate to see a bunch of nuclear material
put on a rocket and launched...somewhere. They don't have quite the reliability I would like to see for that.

With all due respect What the hell was the president thinking humiliating a bully publicly? I know Herr Drumph is the GOP's id, but he's a horrible bully and for POTUS to do that in public at the 2011 Correspondent's dinner was (in hind-and fore-sight) a huge huge error. He's getting his revenge, playing on the racists, which he relishes. Drumph is insatiable.

that dinner
is about ridicule, and no one deserves ridicule more than the human septic tank that is The Hairball. He had spent the previous months flooding the nation with his racist birther vomit, and the target of that vomit felt nothing but disgust towards him, and, at that dinner, it shows. The Hairball is and always has been a truly disgusting creature, and he deserved everything he got at that dinner, and more. He should be ridiculed every time he shows his face, opens his mouth.

Good Morning DMW!
Give yourself a big pat on the back for a great first morning open thread. Also, I know JtC is grateful for your stepping up to the plate to commit doing one day a week. For a while, we had trouble finding people willing to do these and often JtC acted as the substitute on the open days. I think you are going to do a fantastic job on this.
For anyone else who thinks they might want to give the morning open thread a try, consider job sharing with someone else. One great thing about the open thread is that it can be all your own and does not have to be serious.

Top of the Pops, I hope
Interstingly enough as a kid...
In the 80's I didn't get a tape recorder till I was about 12. Prior to that I had a record player. I had a LOT of old "Top Of the Pops" records from the late sixties/early 70s, as well as a few Smothers Brothers Albums and Lily Tomlin's "This Is a Recording".
So, if you want to know where my bizarre sense of humor came from, that's a good place to start.

Welcome to and thanks for...
the OT, DMW, enjoyed your music and looking forward to many more mornings with you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pouring rain here in Portland, so it's a good day to just sit back and relax online for me.

Raining here, too...
love your beautiful state, spent two years in Ashland, with my toddler son, daily in the downtown park--another online friend here and I discussed our similar pleasures, living there about the same time just the other day. And I've a son who can pick up an instrument and play, he's near your age, and his music became my music and vice versa.
Been here less than a year...
But the change in air from California (Where I was born and raised) is incredible.
A lot of what California supposedly USED to be has been seriously tainted by obsession with money. My home town went from a fun little city to a Wine obsessed country club with a city council.

Nice first OT, DMW! Hope to touch on
various VA issues, down the road. My intent was to wait until the Dem Party Primary was over, but (thankfully) now it looks like it will go on quite a while.
Anyhoo, I'm following Zell Miller's 'replacement,' Chairperson of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and Georgia Senator, Johnny Isakson, as he proceeds to make the privatization of many VA health care services permanent, extending it beyond the 3-year test pilot program.
Later, I will write about our own experience with (active duty) military medical facilities, and 'why' I think this is a toxic policy, and a dreadful mistake if Democrats allow it to go forward. Although Mr M qualifies as a Category 3 vet to receive VA care, so far he has not needed to do so. But, I'll fight tooth and nail to stop the VA system from being destroyed, and the high costs of health care being shifted onto veterans. (which is what privatization will do, eventually)
Additional funding and personnel would have taken care of the problems of timely access, without a crisis, if lawmakers had been on the ball. I have to wonder if it was intentional--to set up an opportunity to call for privatization (since that's what has happened).
It's the old 'Camel's nose under the tent scenario' that Democrats so often employ when they 'negotiate' with conservative Republicans.
*Sigh*
Have a nice afternoon, All!

"The standard of living of the average American has to decline," he said. I don't think you can escape that."--Paul A Volcker, during Congressional testimony, October 1978
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Privatization just means...
crappier service for higher prices. Ugh.
Destruction of the VA in total is the end goal here. I can already predict the rhetoric: Why should soldiers get a lifetime pension for injuries when civilians have to settle in court? In fact, soldiers should have to go to COURT in order prove they are not faking injuries in order to get compensation, and we'll toss in punitive measures to make sure they don't waste the already overburdened court's time.
The reason the VA exists in the first place is that it's a VERY bad idea to have combat trained people ANGRY at the government. Just FYI, Oligarchic Party.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Here's another example of why I believe Trump is just the
same thing only different. His supporters believe he's challenging the status quo. I've even seen many progressives and democrats say they think Trump would be better on foreign policy than Clinton. I don't believe that because he adheres to the same false narratives and lies that all the imperialists do. Take ISIS for example. ISIS was created by the U.S., it's CIA and others to act as a mercenary army within Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen, and elsewhere (on to Russia and China), and as a cover to aid in taking down governments and tearing apart sovereign countries, just like Al Qaeda was created and used as such in Afghanistan when the Russians were there in the 80's., and in concert with the entire War OF Terror's purpose from the beginning. The U.S. and others have funded, trained, recruited, organized, and aided ISIS while pretending to fight against it. It's all been a sham, a standard type war maneuver that's been used forever.
So here's Trump's latest.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-claims-man-who-tried-to-rus...
I believe if you read between the lines with Trump, you see he tells the same lies and spouts the same propaganda they all do. It also shows his supporters are as big of dupes as the conservadems backing Clinton and Obama because they believe the War OF Terror lies.
Trump just ratchets up their rhetoric.
IMHO, the bastard is salivating at the thought of smiting his enemies via proxy.
The son-of-a-bitch gets the MSM attention and support for the exact same reason that Obama did. They KNOW he'll play ball with the MIC when he gets into office.
One of the reasons the continued media smearing and ignoring of the Sanders campaign gives me hope. As long as they keep doing it, it makes me hopeful that we might get a candidate who will not give in to their demands.
Of course, I also expect the MIC to try to kill Sanders at that point. They do have an amazing lack of morals when it comes to their profit margin.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Well, I believe that Hillary and Trump are working together
Where would she be without him?
1)He's the only Republican she can beat.
2)He's a fake populist who can draw people away from Sanders.
Now he's attempting to start a war between his supporters and Sanders' supporters, as a sort of sub-theme to the race war he's ultimately trying to start--and that I believe Clinton is also trying to start. But she's supposed to be the "face" in this fight, so she has to issue statements against violence while Trump eggs violence on. Ultimate idea is to have an election btw Trump and Hillary in which most people sit it out in despair, while black people support Hillary in large numbers and the angry, racist portion of the white population supports Trump in large numbers. And Hillary's campaign gets presented by the press as the "black" campaign, or the "POC" campaign, while Trump's is obviously the Racist White Campaign.
This narrative is a gift that keeps on giving, because it not only presents obvious opportunities for white working people to scapegoat black working people, and for that to turn into a fight between them which ends up erasing the existence of the rich bastards who have fucked everyone over--
It also will continue over the years, as Hillary becomes less and less popular due to her horrible policies and rotten decisions once she becomes President. As the austerity economy gets worse and the police state gets worse and the wars get worse, she'll get more and more unpopular. And guess who will get the blame. Black people end up taking it in the face (again), a portion of the white population sinks (again) to its lowest, worst self, and Hillary walks away with clean hands and a real good excuse for funding a bigger and better police state. And any idea that the rich white guys at the top are to blame sinks into silence.
I'm pretty sure this is the plan.
It's quite possible it will succeed.
Then again, it's possible the wheels are going to come off this plan, because her structures of control are fraying even deep inside the system--and Sanders is presenting a credible challenge. Also, the presence of the Sanders campaign has forced Hillary/Trump to play some cards sooner than they wanted, which will make it harder for Hillary to present herself as the Candidate for People of Color. Harder to do that when you compare people of color protesting Trump to the guy who bombed the church in SC.
"More for Gore or the son of a drug lord--None of the above, fuck it, cut the cord."

"I tell you I'll have nothing to do with the place...The roof of that hall is made of bones."
-- Fiver
Well, Bill Clinton said that just wasn't true,
and we all know Bill is a straight shooter.
But excellent point about his sudden focus on Sanders, just when Clinton could use a little help.
It's just evil enough to be plausible.
If a plan sounds completely slimy, I tend to believe that somebody thought of it. Mainly because I think politicians are that freaking evil.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I no longer believe that, although
I wondered about it for a while (whether Trump was trying to help FSC).
He is salivating (as he stated the other day) at the prospect of ripping FSC apart. Remember, Trump shut her and WJC down for almost two weeks, just by making Tweet insinuations about 'Bill's problems.' Frankly, I'm not certain that their reputations can survive a relentless attack by him.
Trump handily destroyed several of the Republican candidates, before they even got started. He's good at 'branding,' if nothing else. And, of course, FSC has high negatives, just like he does.
From what I've read and observed in some interviews with Trump (with Barbara Walters, for one), I have to think that he is pandering--which is disgusting--to racists. But, I'm not convinced that he, personally, is one. (Which is not to excuse him, or condone what he's doing by any means. It's just as destructive, whether or not he actually believes what he's saying.)
Frankly, from my experience, I've found that most uber wealthy folks could care less who you marry, what color you are, how many abortions you've had, etc.--or about any wedge issue--so long as 'the American People' don't want any of their money, and they can keep getting tax cuts!
IOW, the One Percent are all about distracting and manipulating the masses--while they fleece us.
*Sigh*
BTW, heard reporter Jared Rizzi, White House reporter for the XM Channel, POTUS, say that 'O' would endorse either after the Dem Party nomination process, OR MAYBE DURING THE ILLINOIS PRIMARY!
Would that move drive more AA support toward FSC? Dunno. But thought that it was quite interesting.

shaharazade and I have split it, which has worked out well with our work commitments but now we're getting busier so if anyone wants it let me know!

Just hang on until The Cranky Brooklyn Deli Man becomes the president. Then no one will have to work, but can just sit at home and collect checks from Socialism.
Ditto!
Hi Shah...
I can try to round somebody up if you want.
Just a thought,
With so many people here now I wonder if Thursday could just be open to whoever felt like doing it that day. Backyard Science has a thing they call The Daily Bucket and unless it's changed, anyone can start that thread any day that one isn't already in the queue. In other words if I wake up on Thursday and no one has an Open Thread posted I can post one up if I have something to say, or anyone else. I liked it that way, no pressure to come up with something but the opportunity was always there if I felt like it. Just a thought.
All I want is the truth. Just give me some truth. John Lennon
Hi bo...
great to see you about!
I'd have no problem with that, but with well over 900 members we might get more than one posted at a time, but I'm willing to try it. Although with this many members now, if Shah is serious, I'm certain we could find someone.
Hey, man, how about one of your beautiful photo essays, I don't mean as an OT, as a regular essay, unless of course you want to do the OT?
Hi Johnny,
You're probably right, in fact I'm sure you are, about getting more than one posted up in one day. With so many members posting here now it doesn't take long for things to get scrolled so far down it's hard to find them sometimes so it would be easy to overlook one and post a second. What a problem to have eh! Congratulations on that btw, it's been great watching it happen in real time. Sent ya a small donation to help with the upgrade a couple days ago, 3000
dollars, oops, I mean, pennys, just wish it could have been dollars. Anyway, not a lot but better than a kick in the teeth I guess.I've thought about posting another photo essay a couple times but to be honest I can't help but feel posting a bunch of nature pics doesn't really harmonize with all the thoughtful serious discussions that take place here. Actually that thought is what lead to me thinking about the open thread comment I made since open threads seem to be the one place where non serious things seem more acceptable and less incongrouous.
But since you seem alright with another photo essay I'll work on putting something together and try to get it posted in the near future. Thanks.
All I want is the truth. Just give me some truth. John Lennon
there is nothing
more important than nature. My view, anyway.
Hi again bo...
thank you very much for the contribution, we had a big outlay last night for the server upgrade we just made, every little bit helps, my friend.
Yeah, the last week has been amazing, had to do some fancy tap dancing to keep up with it.
I disagree, I think the members would love a nature/photo essay, I know I would. Please do.
well, as you all know, I have nothing to say
so all the OTs I do are just what I'm thinking about at the moment, rather than anything politically savvy. I'll still write when I have a chance, hoping that it entertains somebody.
