Proof that Bernie won 2017

This was the Democratic Party two years ago.

This was the Democratic Party last spring.

DNC Chair Tom Perez has claimed that the Democratic Party supports universal health care, but he has refused to support the policy that would create a system providing it. On May 24, he told late night host Seth Myers, “I would love, if I were king for the day, to do something akin to Medicare for all. Because Medicare has been a very good program, and it’s helped a lot of people.” His invocation of having to be “king for the day” to make Medicare for all a reality perpetuates the false narrative among establishment Democrats that supporting Medicare for All is unrealistic and intangible.

This is the Democratic Party today.

A prominent liberal think tank just put out an ambitious new health care proposal.
That doesn’t sound like news, until you consider which think tank it is ― and exactly what it’s proposing.
The think tank is the Center for American Progress, which is based in Washington and has close ties to the Democratic Party establishment. The proposal, which its authors call “Medicare Extra for All,” would create a new public program, based on Medicare, that would be open to anybody.

The Washington Post described it this way.

It’s significant that this plan is coming from the heart of the Democratic establishment, a think tank that is the closest thing to a Democratic government-in-exile. When it has officially put its imprimatur on a sort-of single-payer health plan, that means the general principle is now all but consensus among Democrats, something that wasn’t true even a year ago.

So if you were part of the Democratic establishment, how would you spin this so that Bernie doesn't get any credit for what everyone knows is his issue?
You do it like this.

A new single-payer health care proposal has just come out, and I think it has a better chance of eventually becoming law — in whole or in part — than Bernie Sanders’s plan.
...Before getting into the details, I want to emphasize one political point. A big reason that Democrats have become so focused on single payer — even Democrats who are to the right of Sanders — is the Republican Party’s scorched-earth response to Obamacare.

Of course! The Dems didn't spend the last year telling us that we couldn't focus on Medicare For All because we had to spend all of our energy defending the hopelessly flawed Obamacare.
Your memory is faulty if you think that is the case.

But I have to admit, it's the sizzle that sells the steak...

Insofar as any Democratic mumblings about health care, my problem with anything they say is, "On what basis would I trust them?" It's hard for me to imagine what a Democrat could say to me that would make me believe they'd follow through on that (or any other issue I cared about) with vigor. So yeah, I'm sure CAP is all in favor of talking about helping the 99%. The question is whether there are any intentions beyond talk. History suggests, "no."

@SnappleBC Didn't that used to be their big thing with Trump, before Russia proved more profitable? That he was a gaslighting fool who couldn't be trusted? Hmm...

Also, yeah, I don't trust any of these people at all. They have consistently proven they can not be trusted and that they are fond of Orwellian double speak. Not to mention if this is to be taken at face value, let's see them propose it at a time it's in danger of being able to pass, as it's not now. Should the dems return to power, I'll bet it "won't be the time now" and more Grand Bargains.

Yep. It's Hillary and Obama who are suggesting that the democrats pass this. Their organization is called Center for American Progress.

One can stop reading this after the first sentence.

A leading liberal policy group is raising the ante in the health care debate with a new plan that builds on Medicare to guarantee coverage for all.

The plan's authors acknowledge that the plan would require significant tax increases.

Even though it has no chance of passing in a Republican-controlled Congress, center president Neera Tanden said, "there is consensus on the progressive side that universal coverage should be the goal and health care is a right."

Yippee! Garanteed coverage. Not single payer like what Bernie was offering. Gee, they are feeling bold, aren't they?

See how people in Utah feel about this new plan.

Voting is like driving with a toy steering wheel.

They need to get more pragmatic. What next, unicorns & rainbows?

@SnappleBC Or how about raising CHIPS to 21 and dropping Medicare to age 50. Get the oldsters free of jobs they hate but keep for the insurance and make room for the next gen. I can't wait to see what new insurance plan the dems come up with. Did Romney have some backup plan to Romneycare laying around?

@Snode

I'm not interested in "insurance". I have one simple question. It's a multiple choice question.

Q: People get sick. What should we do about it?

[ ] Let them die in the gutter.
[ ] Give them medical care.

"Insurance" is not medical care. It is a product sold by corporations which may or may not give access to needed medical care. Either healthcare is a human right or it is not. That's my litmus test not "insurance".

@SnappleBC I'm not interested in insurance either, the last part was supposed to be sarcastic.

More seriously, I think it's good to remind people that "insurance" should not be conflated with "health care"... people in this case referring mostly to new readers on this site since most of us regulars already get that.

Hell, I'd settle for finding a cute male Russian spy under my bed. They keep promising that they're there, I keep checking, never find anything but cardboard bogeymen... never trust known liars, is what I'm starting to think!

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.

The proposal, which its authors call “Medicare Extra for All,”

"Medicare Extra Lite for All" is probably more accurate if CAP has anything to do with it.
