Monsanto going down, updated

http://www.oregonlive.com/environment/index.ssf/2018/01/oregon_sues_mons...

The Attorney General of Oregon has filed a lawsuit against the world's most hated company over contamination of Portland Harbor.

Monsanto intervened heavily in Oregon in 2016, I believe it was, to beat back a GMO labeling bill by about 800 votes. Payback?

Oregon is just the latest entity to single out Monsanto for developing and producing polychlorinated biphenyls, commonly known as PCBs. The colorless compounds were in high demand for decades because of their utility. They were fire-retardant and used in paint products, electric devices and hydraulic oils until the federal government banned them in 1979. PCBs are one of several chemical pollutants found in sediment at the Portland Harbor.

Oregon's lawsuit, along with those filed by the state of Washington, eight West Coast cities including Portland and the Port of Portland in recent years, contends the company knew as early as 1937 that PCBs were extremely harmful.

@Nastarana their fields with GMO seed. I don't understand why they didn't.

@Alligator Ed
Monsanto had to pay the costs of removal of GMO RU-ready canola from Schmeiser's field.

I think the problem is that Monsatan's lawyers say contamination is the fault of neighboring farmers who weren't careful. There is the problem of proving deliberate contamination. Midwest farmers don't seem to plant hedgerows or shelterbelts.

this past summer...with no success. Best wishes for the Oregon suit.

Their seed production oligarchy needs to come down too.

Monsanto filed 144 patent-infringement lawsuits against farmers between 1997 and April 2010, and won judgments against farmers it said made use of its seed without paying required royalties.

Many U.S. farmers have said their fields were inadvertently contaminated with Monsanto’s biotech seeds without their knowledge. The issue has been a topic of concern for not only farmers, but also companies that clean and handle seed.
