Think of the holy and enshrined, within the imposing halls,
imagine not the proud edifice, nor the beatified profiles,
Conduits as they are for the idea. That solitary belief,
no matter the derision of the cynic, sans the gilding of the ages.

Beyond those structures, created to elevate an idea,
and now merely holding their place to retain themselves.
Useless would be too kind a cut, Cancer far kinder still.
No longer a pedestal, but a cage of gas and fire.

I'll take my BLT with Cheese, and enjoy a fine shrimp cocktail.
For God understands. Which is why despite all the claims,
despite your eyes upon every nook and crevice,
Despite the eternal punishment you promise for defiance.

Abbie Hoffman I am not.

But, at the same time, the "You" in the poem is of course the PTB. Since I have no way of addressing this to them directly, this will have to do. Smile

Edit: Changed the last line upon further reflection of the idea. Seemed quite in tune with the rest of the poem's eclectic religious imagery.

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

Also the part where a pedestal is now a cage of gas and fire.

To this, in the spirit of the third verse, I shall add "R'amen"

@Alligator Ed Just was thinking in those terms because of a few things rattling around in the brain that day.

Original last line was very teenager and I'm really glad I dumped it in favor of a more erudite choice.
