in the barn, but a little smaller. She (a rare female orange kitty!) and her sister (a striped tabby) are ready to go to their forever home soon. I hope they'll be able to stay together.
Foster carers of rescued cats, living next door to close friends, allowed us the opportunity to take in Fred.
Haven't felt much like posting, so thanks for Friday Photos.
I gained some notoriety this week among the local birding community here when I found this female harlequin duck, which is very rare for this area:
I spotted her Monday morning; I immediately posted it in the Minnesota birding group on FB and since then lots of people have gone to see her and add her to their life lists. One person said he even skived off work for a while to see her! Some people even went to the other side of the river so they could count the species in two counties! (IDGAF about county lists personally, just state.) She was still there yesterday.
And I did get my pileated woodpecker, finally! I followed her around for about 20 minutes before I was able to get some decent photos. They are notorious for being hard to photograph.
I love their eyes; they just have so much character!
We went looking for snowy owls last weekend, but didn't see any yet. But we did find two great horned owls!
Owl #1
Owl #2: sleepy owl
Then s/he woke up.
We also found this northern shrike, my latest lifer:
We'll keep trying for the snowy owl; there's been a few not far from here.
I haven't been anywhere interesting to take photos. These are from my time in CA and a old gold mining town in the foothills. I don't remember how old this bridge is, but it might be 200 years.
Dang. Now I'm missing the valley oaks.
Photos sure have a way of evoking pleasurable memories.
There is mystery in looking through covered bridges, tunnels and lighthouse internal structures that is quite evocative.

I'm still not quite sure what it is so please enlighten me. I'm still walking at the cemetery and haven't been able to go out to take pictures. It's pretty bleak around here because of shoveling snow we are setting temperature records. I'm not complaining about lack of snow, but our air quality is pretty rank.
Hopefully we are getting some storms next week.

That image is understandably unclear. It's actually a bulge in the sandstone cliff where the water trickling down creates a shape that looks more like a tree, especially with the green plants growing out of small cracks in the stone. Those long strands are aerial roots from a larger plant (which will eventually be a tree) above that you can't see. Hope that's more clear.

for posting the Friday Photography Thread, and for the very interesting photos that you've shared with us, tonight. This thread is always a highlight of my week!
Because we're getting ready to hit the road during the wee hours of the morning, I didn't get a chance to dig up a stock photo. Also, for some reason, the upload button (for my images library) seems to have disappeared. I sure hope this isn't a permanent problem. (It's happened once before, but showed up after a reboot.)
Also, thanks to SP and all the rest of our excellent Caucus photographers for sharing their work.
Everyone have a nice and safe weekend!

but, for some reason, I couldn't play it. Could be it can't be played in the US--maybe? Or, it could be that something about my browser is outdated--I don't always keep my plugins updated properly.
Anyhoo, I found another version, in case other folks stateside encounter the same problem.
all the excellent photos that Daenerys and SD posted--thanks!
I so much enjoy bird photos. We routinely feed birds and rabbits (and those dastardly squirrels!). Of course, our numbers are greatly diminished at this time of the year.
Glad that BR has a new friend. Fred is a very handsome kitten, and a very lucky one.

@Unabashed Liberal
I don't think I've ever seen a squirrel here. Our cats keep most small critters away. We do get rabbits though; one of the cats got one a week or two ago. Picked it clean she did! Then there was the opossum that got in our feed shed; my husband was the one to shoot it the other night--he's a country boy now! (Opossums carry a strain of encephalitis that the horses can get so we have to get rid of them.)

@janis b
I don't know, how do they know other animals can't get in them? Maybe I just didn't read enough.
We have live traps that we use to catch the wild cats/kittens so we can tame them and spay/neuter and rehome, as well as raccoons and skunks.
Is the A12 trap a danger to cats? "It is extremely unlikely that a cat will trigger an A12 possum trap because the trap can only be fired through deliberate action. A combination of the lure formula and trigger design make the trap unattractive to cats and require the Bite Block to be deliberately bitten and pulled down with 700g of force for the trap to fire."

there seems to be a neighborhood opossum--thankfully, he/she only shows up a couple of times a year. (Course, can't really tell if it's the same one!)
Oddly, he/she always walks along the perimeter of our property--almost like he knows where the property line is. Go figure.

Hi Daenerys
I'm glad we all here enjoy sharing our special places and interests.

Some shots from a recent visit to the lighthouse at Pt. Loma.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
That first photo is great!
I find it very entertaining and it makes me laugh at its incongruity, even though it's just the way it was.
Thank you, Janis

That's what looking up through the lighthouse structure
looks like? Wow!
It's inside the lighthouse,
but I'm at the top of the stairs looking down.

I guess I can't tell up from down : ).
Thanks for hosting tonight, Janis

Can you smell the wood of the barn?
Janis, love the first photo. It took me awhile to figure it out.
Bollox, cute kitty. Love the name.
Dani, how cool for you to be the first one to see the bird. Like the owls.
SP, the photo of the staircase is way cool. You wouldn't happen to have a spare bedroom for cheap rent?
Thanks mollie. You seem to be on the road a lot. Be safe.
Do you mean the first
or the second photo?
Ahh, yes the second photo
