The algae has that intense green I so admire in the mosses around here in the woods. Wanted to share a pic my SIL took out her front door, south shore, LI, NY. The reds are wild.
You would by now have collected in your memory, a wealth of amazing sunsets and sunrises at sea. Lucky you!
This was not out my front or back door, but very close. Those greens are truly arresting in colour and texture.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

unfortunately I feel few have the capacity to make the connection between externally perceived beauty and the internal capability to absorb and transcend, to realize the inspiration leads to a greater awareness of our place in the mix. Words sometimes don't do ideas justice.
@janis b
sun approaching the horizon at sea, there would be maybe 20 scary gray's with dark clouds obscuring any difference between the sky and water, portending rough conditions. Kinda like life, the weight of the foulness magnifies the occasional beauty perceived.
And your description is a very stirring image of that. Wonderful!

I'm sure I've told you how envious I am for anyone who lives close to the ocean.
This is one of the hundreds of photos I took after I got my first digital camera. How cool to not have to worry about the costs of developing them.

nice shot of the sky to water intersection. Still waters run deep (sometimes).

You’re right about the freedom enjoyed since digital photography created greater possibilities. I also really enjoy the possibility of sharing our different environments digitally.
I hope you can arrange at some time to be on the coast where your self finds such solace.

sunsets. I too hope that I can get back to California and bodega bay. And mammoth lakes with my slr camera. I ran out of film after I hiked for an hour to photograph the mountains from a different point. Big bummer
I also went down a steep and winding road to Red's Valley national monument to hike and to see Devils Postpile. The area has all kinds of activities like fishing and horseback rides. The rocks are columnar basalt that were formed by a cooling volcano.
See why I want to go back?
This is Devils Slide in a canyon close by my city.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Thank you for these lion portraits which are so expressive. They urge me to contemplate about what they are experiencing and feeling. Do they respond to your presence in some way?
Thanks for Friday Night Photos tonight, Janis. I really like the colors in your first photo.
These are some shots of the lions I took last week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
@janis b
I think they might be experiencing some feelings of contentment. From their point of view life is good. They have food, a secure environment and someone to mate with. What more could a lion ask for? As for them responding to us humans, I've never noticed anything more than them looking at us looking at them.

True .. what more could a lion in a zoo ask for ; ). But somehow, I imagine the passion is diminished?

might remember how it feels when they were free to roam and not be limited to a little golden gage with mates and food. I don't remember when I used to go to the zoo regularly that lions gaze at their human visitors (unlike gorillas do)
I think lions purposefully ignore you and do not stare at you. May be they are ashamed to have given up into accepting their limitation of freedom. They can't be proud of it, I think, and therefore rather pretend to not see you to avoid facing the realities of their imprisonment.
A big old gorilla though places himself directly behind the cage's stakes, stares at you and expects an answer as to why you look at him. I never found an answer as to why I would stare at him and left often feeling sad.
Thanks for being here and host this little "beauty break" on Friday nights. It makes me forget the less enjoyable news and love it. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Hi Janis.
Just so everybody can get their internal juices upset I present:
My special concoction of carrots, spinach, garlic, onion, celery and basil that is added to all of my canned tomato sauces and juices.
Thanks for hosting tonight.

Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
From the colour, it looks like the spinach and basil predominate. I have never tried spinach before as an ingredient in tomato sauce making. I can imagine the spinach adds a certain unusual depth to a traditional tomato sauce. Enjoy!
On the stove at the moment is a sauce quite different in nature, but it is Spring headed toward Summer at the moment. Basil and cilantro stems were in the sauce before I strained it. By the time it's finished some fresh basil and cilantro leaves will again decorate it.

I just finished eating it on top of rice, sprinkled with soy sauce, lime and more cilantro. Not bad.
Did you recognise the fennel seeds, which also go great with tomato sauces.
My favourite form of soybean is the freshly boiled pods. You should be able to grow them well where you are, if you're interested. Parboiled, they freeze really well.

Got some good ones this week!
I found this juvenile bald eagle along the Mississippi one day on my walk:
It takes ~4 years for them to get the white head, tail and brown body.
Then my husband and I went to a lake where someone on eBird.org counted 170 (!!!!) hooded mergansers a couple days earlier, and we were in luck as there were still several there!
^I like this one, even if it is backlit and sillhouetted. Oh well, these turned out much better than my last ones! We first stopped at a small park on the south side of the lake and I spotted them further out, so we drove around to the radio station, got out and there were a bunch of them right by the shore but my husband didn't notice and kept talking and most of them flew back across the lake. But it was cool to see so many! We also saw some common goldeneyes, bufflehead and redheads.
Here's a few from my backyard; I've got my winter bird feeders all set up now.
Then we were walking on the trail the other day and saw this majestic fellow!
It's the height of deer hunting season here right now, but I don't hunt so I had to post him on FB and joke that I got my trophy buck!
And this common redpoll showed up in our yard a couple days ago:
It was just this one and I haven't seen it again but I was hoping to see some! I saw some here 20+ years ago but not since; I hope it brings more. They're so cute!
We also saw a pileated woodpecker the other day and watched it for a while but it kept hiding in the branches so I only managed to get blurry photos of it. I will keep trying!
Are there different species of birds there because of the climate?

off the top of my head: redpolls, snow buntings, and snowy owls. It's looking to be another good year for snowy owl sightings; we're keeping our eyes open!
I love the very still reflection of reeds and ducks, as well as the silhouetted Merganser.
Is that a Titmouse at your feeder?

That's a white-breasted nuthatch. I would love to see a tufted titmouse; they're so cute! They are in the southeastern corner of the state, but not where I live, alas.

Northern California coast surrounded by giant redwoods. My camp spot was right on the cliff by the ocean. Two weeks of watching amazing sunsets.

Basalt
Beautiful.
My photo icon is a waterfall flowing over volcanic dolerite (similar to basalt).
There is a distinctive trap-rock 'staircase' alongside the falls that you can walk up.
Would you like to share some of your rum,
so that I can at least imagine being there?
Damn, those formations are spectacular.
Maybe we can exchange places for awhile ; ).
Maybe we could arrange to leapfrog

That's one of my favourite aspects of photography - the surprising confluence of light, moment and motion.
Wonderful image, thank you.
