6 BCE
was the Year of the Consulship of Balbus and Vetus
Emperor Augustus sent ferrets to the Balearic Islands to control the rabbit plagues. (The islanders were great slingers so it made sense for a military empire to cater to them.) I wonder if they were folk slingers, or more formal?
Tiberius Claudius Nero was sent to Armenia, then retired to Rhodes. Another opportunity for me to play ...

6 CE
was the Year of the Consulship of Lepidus and Arruntius (Lepidus = hare, FWIW)
Josephus says that Quirinius conducted a census in Judea which caused a revolt therein which was led by led by Judas the Galilean. The revolt was put down and the rebels were crucified, but it gave birth to the Zealot movement. The zealots wished to establish a global Jewish theocracy and fought the Romans until about 70 CE. They left behind their name.

Meanwhile, in China, an occultation of Mars by the moon caused some to fear for the life of emperor Ping Di who, in fact, died of unexpected causes within a couple of months. This left it up to good old Wang Mang to select a new emperor, and he picked the 2 year old Ruzi Ying.

Still no sleep. Days of no sleep. Panic attacks bubble up. I have turned on my TV for the first time in months and am watching House of Cards, from the beginning. Depressingly evil.

Only the three-part U.K. original (which, if one is in any way an idealist about politics, was also downer enough).

Thanks, el, but I believe I'll pass on Malaria day. Well maybe I'll celebrate later by having a gin and tonic (that contains quinine).

Malaria Day commemorates the day when French physician Charles Leveran first observed malaria-causing parasitic protozoans in blood. In 1907, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery.

Pan American Malaria Day should not be confused with World Malaria Day, a United Nations observance held on April 25.

It continues to be a problem disease especially in Africa. From wiki:

The disease is widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions that exist in a broad band around the equator. This includes much of Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In 2015, there were 296 million cases of malaria worldwide resulting in an estimated 731,000 deaths. Approximately 90% of both cases and deaths occurred in Africa. Rates of disease have decreased from 2000 to 2015 by 37%, but increased from 2014 during which there were 198 million cases. Malaria is commonly associated with poverty and has a major negative effect on economic development. In Africa, it is estimated to result in losses of US$12 billion a year due to increased healthcare costs, lost ability to work, and negative effects on tourism.

Here's wishing you all good health and happiness.

When we went to Kenya years ago, we were given two options on medication and one was described as having possible side effects that were rare but horrible. Iirc, my wife tried that, with no ill effect, and I stayed away from it.

Fifteen years later, the 9/11 families are still trying to hold the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accountable in a federal court of law for the mass murder of our loved ones. And, unfortunately for us, the Kingdom seems to still remain “in favor” with the U.S. government—which is probably why our path to justice has taken so long and why our court case against the Saudis is constantly getting delayed and dismissed by the Judge. To wit, 16 years after the cold-blooded murder of our loved ones, we have yet to even reach the discovery phase of our federal court case—the part of our case where we get to show our evidence (the money transfers, the checks, the FBI reports, the travel documents, the correspondence, the wiretaps, etc.).

culprit, and the sole investigative task is to find crimes to pin on them. Why? Hezbollah has strenuously defended southern Lebanon and the Palestinians living therein from Israeli attacks and incursions. This makes Hezbollah a global terrorist threat and Iran a backer thereof, which, accordingly, must be destroyed. Besides that, the Saudi's have this thing about Iran as well.

"on climate change". Fair warning, nobody can make me f-bomb like Jerry. Not even Trump, he's New York trash. Jerry is All California. As usual, Jerry says "please clap" but do not look closely at my actions, especially where I live.

Vatican City

Gov. Jerry Brown challenged the world’s religious leaders to further engage as he minimized the negative effects of President Donald Trump on meeting the climate-change challenge.

“The Trump factor is very small, very small indeed,” in comparison to the commitments taking place around the world, Brown said to a burst of applause Saturday at an event organized by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences. “That’s nothing to cheer about, because if it was only Trump that was a problem, we’d have it solved. But that’s not our only problem.

“The problem … is us. It’s our whole way of life. It’s our comfort … It’s the greed. It’s the indulgence. It’s the pattern. And it’s the inertia.”

OMFG! Anyone have a mirror for Jerry? Anyone? Bueller?
FUCK

Brown, who arrived Friday for nearly two weeks of climate talks across Europe, said the path to transformational change must include the mass mobilization of the religious and theological sphere, but also the prophetic sphere.

“The power here is prophecy. The power here is faith, and that’s what this organization is supposed to be about. So, let’s be about it and combine with the technical and the scientific and the political.”

To slow the devastation of climate change, society cannot rely only on science and technology and must begin to accept the need for more transformational approaches, Brown said. He spoke for more than 40 minutes, punctuating his remarks and answers to attending scientists to reflect on his own experiences.

Because of course, Jerry cannot stop talking about his own experiences, as if they were not formed within the bubble of wealth and privilege he was born in to, literally.

"Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Water_Project.

Anyone else ever wonder how much methane was released during the "largest transformation of wetlands to agriculture ever seen"? Any affect on the climate there? Gee nobody studied that, never ever? Huh. Okay back to you Jerry.

“We need to wash our brains out and see a very different kind of world.”

Who is the WE you speak of Jerry? The ones who DO ANYTHING except provide workers with living wages, and affordable housing. Especially not to the brown immigrants from down south. Huh, and those are your pals.
---
Gee you guys, please send your "thoughts and prayers" out to California, I am down to 124 pounds again and I still don't want a friggin' food subsidy, I want a job that pays enough to buy healthy food. Freezing my ass off right now, and I still don't want a friggin' housing subsidy. I want to pay 30% of my income for housing, like we were taught to budget for growing up. It's not me who fucked up the budgets Jerry, it is you and your crony pals.

FUCK. If it's Newsom 2018 we are I am so totally screwed, to the wall.

Delaine Eastin for Governor, if you must vote D, that's what I say.
Thanks for the rant space, keep going.

I get down to socal most years to spend part of the spring in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It is almost a pilgramage, towing our tiny travel trailer. East & down to and over the Tehachipis and then on down, and then eventual return by sneaking back west and up through Pomona and Fillmore to the coast near Ventura and back up along the coast. And some point much old music bubbles up.

When I worked for Edgar Winter he would spend about a half an hour before each performance selecting and getting the reed "just so" for his saxophone. He would open a new box of reeds and select the best one from the box discarding the rest. This would involve a visual inspection. As he was nearly blind each one would be help up about six inches in front of his face and carefully inspected. Once the selection was made he would spend a very long time wetting and fitting it to the mouthpiece.

Also this....
