From The Guardian: "Bernie Sanders beats Hillary Clinton in stunning Michigan primary upset"
Bernie Wins Michigan in Big Upset
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From The Guardian:
Vermont senator had trailed in polls by more than 20 points but opposition to free trade and growing African American support won votes in rust-belt state
Bernie Sanders pulled off his biggest win of the Democratic presidential race on Tuesday, defeating Hillary Clinton in the Michigan primary on a night which also confirmed strong anti-establishment support for Donald Trump in the battle for the Republican nomination.
In an industrial state hit hard by the decline of manufacturing, the Vermont senator’s consistent opposition to free trade deals appears to have been a decisive factor, but he also showed signs of weakening Clinton’s dominance among African American voters.
I love this image from Nate Silver's 538 -
Not quite "Dewey Defeats Truman," but oh so sweet:
Well...?
A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma
. . . holy shit, this is
. . . holy shit, this is definitely Nate Silver's "Dewey Defeats Truman" moment.
And I like Silver. He doesn't just have egg on his face now; he's got an omelet.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things - and no good thing ever dies.
A factory farms worth of Chickens just had an orgy on his face!
It's Funny
...my wife, at her ropes end with arthritic knee replacement surgery, decided to try medical marijuana. This is Day One, and so far so good. It is helping.
Bernie is a win-win.
weed for arthritis
Weed for what ails you.
It solves Raggedy Andy's PTSD issues and it solves any issue I might happen to have on any given day (except when I'm at work, teehee).
Which Is how I settled on Blueberry and derivatives. Nothing helps as completely for my personal biochemistry.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I'm glad to know that.
I'll talk it over with Raggedy Andy. He's also found that some kinds are better than others for certain issues. I appreciate you sharing your insight!
And this is why Nate needs to get out more.
That's his "Dewey Defeats Truman" result, right there. He didn't just predict a Clinton win; he predicted a Clinton blowout. And he was so, so very wrong.
This is a Great Day
This is a Great Day! Bernie won Michigan, and I joined a very nice new blog!
Pardon the toxic stench... I know, smells like Flint water, don't it?
Yes, one might say I come from a very toxic place.
But who cares, let's go Bernie!
Bernie is a win-win.
Welcome my Brother or sister from Flint!
Thanks for helping get the man with the best plan a win!
We all need him, but you guys need him more than most.
I don't know much, but I know a Sanders Presidency would NEVER let this go unrectified or unpunished!
Haha, not from Flint
I have several good friends
I have several good friends that live in Michigan. They're progressives who have viewed the Republican Party's screaming race rightward over the decades with alarm and disgust. (We've been friends for over 20 years.) For the last few months, I've heard more about Bernie from them than I have anywhere else, except for Daily Kos.
These ladies have been busy phone-banking and getting the word out. I don't know how the Sanders campaign has been working its ground game in Michigan, but I'd say that if my friends are any indication, Michigan voters didn't need much convincing. They're horrified by the politics of environmental racism in Flint. They've been outraged by the Constitutional violations committed by the so-called "emergency managers" appointed by Snyder. For that matter, many of them seem to want Snyder's head on a lead platter.
And with all that, I was still biting my nails until I saw Michigan was called definitively for Bernie Sanders.
My friends are very smug tonight. As they should be. Well done, ladies, and well done, Michigan.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things - and no good thing ever dies.
Beautiful story, plz give those MI ladies our heartfelt thx.
Michigan lead the working class to its greatest victory once and it can do it again.
Hopefully, tonight is just the beginning.
If it's a boy, name it Bernie?
Heck, if it's a girl, Bernice works as well.
That's Daddy's little Girl Zoe.
She is my fishing buddy. That pick was when she was tiny, she is now a 45 pound ball of energy that makes me play frisbee at least 3 times a day. (I think she does it just to make sure I get out of the house once in a while.)
We got her from a shelter, she picked me. I was looking at a smaller dog in a kennel to her right and she reached through the grate and smacked me right in my forehead like, "Hey, I am over here you idiot!"
It was love at first sight. Then when I found out she was born on 4/20 I had to take her home. (I wanted to name her Kaya, wife vetoed and wanted something lame and we settled on Zoe )
She is 4 now, and we just got her a little brother I Wanted to name him Gozer (The Destructor from Ghost Busters) because he ate 3 pairs of my fishing glasses plus a couple pairs of Flip Flops in the first week (I never name a pet right away, I let them determine it from their personality) but again we eventually compromised on Loki
(Which was what I actually wanted, so I am figuring out how to get my way! YEAH! )
He is certainly full of mischief, and now right after his first birthday this rescue that was supposed to be a cur breed that maxes at around 40 pounds is now 65 and thinks he is a lap dog, lol!
Poor Dude got a 5 or 6 paragraph reply, more or less the dog's entire life story. And he's not even my dog! (I'll have to watch that, in the future.)
Life is just better with dogs (pets)
I'm a total sucker for them too --->
That one in the photo ate half our sofa when he was six months old. He's five now and has thankfully stopped destroying furniture but it was a rough couple of months until he outgrew that stage. Still, I wouldn't trade that doggie stare when the alarm goes off for anything. It's wonderful to wake up to all that love and adoration in the morning.
(*please note that my husband loves me too, he just need coffee before he can express it)
We have three fur pups
One elderly, over sized sable pomeranian named Willie Bear who is my baby. And two liver and white English springers (Gidget and Roux) like Unabashed Liberal's dog above. Our springers were both rescues out of Louisiana.
I had to learn early, but developed a love for it!
Mostly because my mom, Don't get me wrong, I love her, but she could burn cold cereal, lol!
When my parents got divorced I was like 12 and she went back to work and would be wiped out when she got home so I started cooking dinner for her and my sister and I and I think that is what made me love it. The look of joy on her face when she came home from work to a home cooked meal that actually tasted good and I cooked for cheap was awesome and made me really appreciate the power of a good meal and good people.
I still love to have people over several times a month for dinner parties and now that my wife is going to be "Moving up the Corporate ladder" and I am retired I get to be the good Company Wife.
I send her to work with home made monkey bread, Sweet Amish white and whatnot since I got into baking and now her girlfriends are trying to "poach" me, lol!
Sanders' plans for infrastructure repair
will not only provide jobs, but it will help the Flints and other places in this country with aging pipes, many of which are lead-infested.
Not only that
But it could give some young adult residents a decent career. The average age of a plumber in the US is 56. There is a giant projected shortage coming because a college degree is useless. You have to learn it by doing.
Yes. I've been watching Rick
Yes. I've been watching Rick Snyder run roughshod over a lot of people. Kudos to your friends. I used to live in Michigan in the 1980's and it's now unrecognizable.
Bernie blows the doors off
Bernie blows the doors off MSM, Hillary and Nate Slither who will all now eat humble pie for breakfast this morning.
Michigan has a big voice right now.
It's the water, stupid. And manufacturing, housing, income and racial inequality...these have rattled and shattered the entire state. Those who supported HRC last night, save for the wealthy, seem to know nothing about HRC's true positions and intentions. Those who supported Bernie showed the country and world a thing or two about one of the most oppressed and depressed states of our union. It's devastating what they have had to endure to unite and make this statement.
Great comment, Quilldriver!
I live in the Deep South,
I live in the Deep South, where things are not that great either. Seeing Bernie win Michigan was great...and not so unexpected for me.
The vote in my state March 1, however, was depressing. If people looked even marginally close at HRC's record of not helping people ("super predators", welfare "reform", etc ad nauseum) some clarity would come. It is apparent that many in my region seem to regularly vote against their best interests.
Persistence is All
Michigan has a lot of pissed off people right now.
In addition to the human trajedy, do you have any idea how much Snyder is costing this state? 1.2 so far in legal fees for the Mayors personal atrorneys. Add in lawsuits, new pipes, 734 million emergency manager debt in the Detroit schools, tax cuts for business, and we have to be in the billions and billions. Meanwhile have the worst roads in the world, slashed and destrroyed K-12, Universities underfunded, fracking going on in residential neighborhoods, and Tea Pots in office evereywhere. Yep, I think Michigan was ready to kick some ass.
I am so glad to see the Clinton's finally get theirs in this state. Every election, our lame ass Michigan Democratic Party would haul Bill Clinton's sorry ass into Michigan to rally the troops for whatever lame ass establishment neoliberal they were peddling. Seriosly - NAFTA, TPP, housing crash, stagnant wages, no jobs in this state and the party brings in Bill.
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon
Apparently, noting that Hillary's a regional candidate is now
verboten on DKos. It's "offensive" to note that each and every one of Hillary's "blowout" wins has happened in the former Confederacy, because apparently some Clintonista fee-fees get hurt.
Reality-based community, my ass. No point trying to engage with a Clinton supporter - they just look for excuses to claim that they're the victim. Assholes.
Ironic
The whole confederacy argument is a complete strawman designed to end discussion of the HRC is a regional candidate narrative.
just read an article in the nation's mar 21 issue
that said the dnc purposely set up the primary calendar to favor conservative candidates & put financial pressure on the more progressive ones to stay in the race by letting southern states vote first.
looks like bernie's blowing that plan up
Wouldn't surprise me
A lot of California's being last in line is our own fault (we tried the March primary thing in 2008 but folks complained that it made the election cycle for state and Congressional offices too long), but I would love to see a regional primary system -- let IA and NH take the first two just for tradition's sake, but then after that hold primaries on the same day in each region -- South,Northeast, Midwest, South -- and take turns with the order each Presidential election cycle. Could cut back on the amount of cross-country travel (which would be better for the environment and for candidate schedules). Would probably need more study to determine feasibility, but I think it could work.
And now the Clinton Cavalry have TO'd me for
pointing it out. Fuck them and the horses they rode in on.
Confederacy? They made that up!
Saying Hillary is a strong candidate in the South (the South!!! Not "the confederacy"!!) is so obviously true that they've made up this weird confederacy business to distract everyone and continue the "you're racist...and sexist too if the racist thing doesn't work" meme.
Hillary doesn't do issues and Hillary fans really don't do issues. All they have is their Peggy Noonan style outrage. "
Still in a state of shock here
Very Serious Person Matt Yglesias is getting HAMMERED on Twitter for this Tweet from last Wednesday:
While I think we Bernie supporters can be adult enough to refrain from "fat fuck" and "hack" references, the schadenfreude is delightful this morning.
Fat fuck is an irrelevant
reference but hack is right on the money. I have learned that political hacks come in all flavors and are on every media from RW to so called progressive 'moderates'. Speaking of hacks The Guardian hired Richard Wolfe to cover politics in the US. He's been writing hit pieces like crazy that are billed as reporting rather then pundirt opinion. Think I'll mosey on over and see what he has to say for his nasty self.
fat fuck . . . you make me laugh girlfriend!
as I said to your hubby, so glad to see you both again.
as for your very important distinction: reporting vs pundirt opinion. we need to keep reminding people of the difference, whether in person or on social media . . . keep putting it out there.
