I was planning on helping you out with a POT so that you could prepare or eat dinner without distraction, but you’ve got it covered. Thanks for all the covering you do.

As I was walking along my local beach at low tide I noticed hundreds, no thousands of very small white things ahead. They were congregated in protected spots or flying around in the strong winds.

They are the sea creature, Velella, who ride on the ocean currents with a little sail like feature of their bodies. Originally they are blue, like the Blue Bottle Jellyfish and the blue Moon Snail they are cosy with in the first photo. But because they are so small and delicate they are quickly bleached and dried by the sun, and drift about like snowflakes on the beach. It was sad to see such a mass stranding, but also a wonder.

Hoping you all enjoy a light and wonderful weekend.

My favourite food is raw and rawish fish, but have never overcome my tendency to sea-sickness (with the exception of canoes or kayaks), nor learned the art of fishing from the beach. So I make due with fish markets. Fortunately, there’s fresh fish easily available.

Just for fun ...

Kind of busy tonight, so here's one I took back in September:

Blue heron in early morning light along the Mississippi river.

The other day I decided to see if my camera could take a picture of the Milky Way, just for shits and giggles, as we get really great views of it here at the farm on clear nights. I messed with the settings and did end up getting stars, but it looked more like a meteor shower. (Haven't uploaded it yet; maybe by next Friday.) The wind is another issue to contend with here. I'm really hoping to get some auroras; we missed them the last couple times they were out. At least I know my camera can pick up stars though.

Clapping

I have a 'stock photo' of a gorgeous scene of autumn leaves, but, because I'm a little unsure if it's copyrighted, decided that it's best not to post it.

So, instead, here's a stock photo of an interesting old building that's now an 'historical building' in our southernmost residence. I believe it's the old American Legion building.

@Unabashed Liberal

I’m torn and thought you might provide some help. I met a beautiful cat just now who I think is the source of some vocalisations I’ve heard over the past two days. He/Her (I haven’t investigated which yet) visited me on the deck. I think it’s a wild cat. The sounds I heard were more throaty and plaintive than a purr. I debated briefly whether to encourage its presence since my favourite guests are the local birds. It sounded like it was begging for something. I made a spontaneous decision to feed it the only kind of milk I had, coconut milk, which it drank. Any advice?

@janis b
So pretty, and healthy looking, just from the face. She doesn't look like a stray, but domesticated cat's are the, um, well, opportunistic whores of animal kingdom.

I suspect she's either just playing you for food, or maybe something happened, like a recent move or death or upset in her people, so she's looking for loving.

I wouldn't feed her if she only comes around occasionally. But you already did lol. Cats pick their people, as they say, so you just might be her new person. Enjoy?

@Deja

I’ll keep in mind your insight and knowledge of cats before I fully commit or she returns home.

Yesterday, or the day before I heard a short segment on the evidence that dogs behave in a similar way to cats in order to seduce their carers to give them what they want. I guess we all have strategies to find what we need/want ; ).

Thanks Deja.

If you're in the country, she might be a prego dump by a horrible person.

Those are the types of people I can fantasize about using the death penalty on. Sorry! I just, ugh. Makes me so mad! Sigh. . .

If so, she checking you out to see if you're safe, and is likely looking for a safe place to have her babies.

You'll learn soon enough lol. Good luck!

janis b's picture

@Deja

She didn’t look or feel pregnant, but it could be early days. I’ll check more carefully if she returns. I didn’t see or hear her today. Yes, I’m in the ‘country’ (called the ‘bush’ here). I’ve heard of locals dumping pets for a variety of reasons. It seems to increase when the summer holidays approach and a fair percentage of the population abandon the bush for the beach. Shameful I know!

I’ll keep you informed, and thanks heaps for your contribution to my understanding of cats, which is totally deficient.

Unabashed Liberal's picture

@janis b

very possible that Deja could be right that she's got people (somewhere), and just came around for attention. Of course, I'm probably not the most knowledgeable person to ask about feline behavior, not having ever had a cat.

Now, about five years ago, we had a very thin stray cat that hung around for a week or so; so I bought some cat food (kibble and wet) the next time I went shopping, and proceeded to put it out in a prominent place in the yard. Along with milk. I watched the food, saw him/her approach it, smell it, and circle it several times. But, he/she never actually touched any of it. I put it out a couple or three times, as I recall. In the end, I assumed that it was a feral cat, and that 'regular cat food' was not going to appeal to him/her. It's a sad situation, when folks refuse to feed cats/abandon them, and force them to hunt for their survival.

For the past couple of years, we've had a growing problem with feral cats killing 'our birds.' And, I'm still at a loss as to what to do about it. So, if you do have a lot of local birds frequenting a backyard feeder, you might want to consider that, when deciding whether to encourage him/her to stay.

Best of luck, whatever you do.

Hey, have a nice weekend! Pleasantry

Daenerys's picture

@Unabashed Liberal They cannot digest it as adults. Cats, like many mammals including humans become lactose intolerant once they are weaned. That's why cats get diarrhea from milk. Being able to digest lactose into adulthood is the exception, not the rule!

I'm also enclosing something that might be considered a
family heirloom. It's a pin that belonged to my Aunt Lizzie, for
whom you are named. It has her initials (for Lizzie M. Griffin) and
the year she acquired it, '89 (for 1889). Lizzie was a wonderful
woman – a school teacher and administrator for 60 years, and a
brilliant musician who played piano and organ, taught both, and
founded early music society in Sacramento. She was also one of
the gentlest and most loving woman I have ever known, an Aunt
and Great Aunt to be proud of. I like to think that something of her

spirit comes to you with this pin.

It did for a while, pretty cool. Object arrived with a card, September 1981:
