(Let’s forget politics for a moment): Penguins die in 'catastrophic' Antarctic breeding season

Penguins die in 'catastrophic' Antarctic breeding season

All but two Adelie penguin chicks have starved to death in their east Antarctic colony, in a breeding season described as "catastrophic" by experts.

It was caused by unusually high amounts of ice late in the season, meaning adults had to travel further for food.

It is the second bad season in five years after no chicks survived in 2015.

Conservation groups are calling for urgent action on a new marine protection area in the east Antarctic to protect the colony of about 36,000.
WWF says a ban on krill fishing in the area would eliminate their competition and help to secure the survival of Antarctic species, including the Adelie penguins.

*

“The risk of opening up this area to exploratory krill fisheries, which would compete with the Adelie penguins for food as they recover from two catastrophic breeding failures in four years, is unthinkable.”

This just bothers me to no end. One of my main gripes with the human race (beside the way we treat each other) is the way we’ve abused the other creatures who live on this Earth with us. I’m not going to go all PETA on anyone but I am going to point out that our fellow creatures of the animal world have as much right to this planet and it’s resources as ‘we’ have. I sincerely believe that. And I sincerely believe that are doing basically nothing to prevent the loss of so many creatures (and so much plant life). This does not make sense. If we’re as freaking smart as we think and say we are, why aren’t we in an absolute panic about the rate we are losing so many key players in our eco-system? The loss of every critter or creature has a deleterious effect the rest of them, and US.

If I had lots of money this is an area where a lot of it would go. Especially since I’m becoming more of a misanthrope by the day. I catch myself occasionally wondering if Darwin didn’t have some kinks in his theory. Because if ‘we’ are the epitome of evolution, then you gotta wonder why we’re such a hateful and selfish creature. The ‘lower’ life forms aren’t nearly as dangerous, destructive, hateful, and backward as we are. We are the species with the tendency to “shit in our nest”. Ours and everything else’s nests.

WE HAVE TO DO BETTER! Why bother cleaning up politics if we’re going to destroy the planet? Otherwise we should just throw a big party and go out with a ‘bang’. Something that the neocons and neo-libs have been angling for for a while now.

I may take my belief a bit further though.
I sincerely wish humans would disappear before all other life on this blue marble. It's not going to happen as long as many believe that humans should come first. As such, no mammal will survive the onslaught we pervade upon natural resources.
My last trip to Drummond Island in northern Michigan made me cry. The destruction of what were once pristine natural areas by off road vehicles (particularly the jeep jamboree) was sickening. The majority of visitors just don't care and those who live there welcome the money without care for their own back yard.
This is happening everywhere and I hang my head in shame.

I've never understood the need to tear up wonderful countryside in some god-awful vehicle.

Likewise, the pillocks that use jet-skis and ruin quiet times by a lake.

Idiocracy indeed.

So damn lazy we are willing to destroy our natural wonders because we’re too freaking lazy to use our legs to get there. And then there are the vermin who just live (and love) to tear things up.

But then again, our species dorsn’t even shop for groceries anymore. People are signing up for services to have the day’s dinner all purchased and prepped for them and all they have to do is pop it in the oven or frying pan. That way they can pretend they slaved over that hot stove and really did something.

**sigh**

Here is another destructive jackasd that I wanted to see locked up for the rest of her unnatural life. Someone this stupid is a detriment to what is referred to as the ‘human race’.

Woman who defiled national parks with graffiti banned from 524 million acres of public land

A San Diego woman pleaded guilty last week to seven misdemeanor counts of defiling rock formations with graffiti in seven national parks and has been banned from 524 million acres of public lands during her two years of probation

National parks are doomed.

One nexus with international politics: when the illegal Japanese whalers hauled members of the Sea Shepherd Society before American courts, did the American courts disbar themselves on the grounds that neither the cases' principals nor the territories and waters involved were American, as they should have done? No, instead, they sided with the illegal Japanese commercial whalers and against our long-term allies Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and South Africa!

Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson has apparently convinced the US Courts that his/Sea Shepherd's side of these cases has some merit, as his US Passport has been restored and he has entered the US safely in 2016.

But the whole "profit before Planet and People" thing pisses me off!

a resource is ‘renewable’ (fish, trees, etc.). They are NOT renewable at the rate we need them to be to maintain the needs of the almost 7-1/2 billion (and growing at an alarming rate) people on this planet. (A different topic for a different day.)

And we’re barely trying. The oceans are hopelessly polluted. So is our groundwater. The coral beds are dying. And now we have the Tiny Fungered Shitgibbin backing us out of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

We are so screwed.

I laugh every time I hear or read that a resource is ‘renewable’ (fish, trees, etc.). They are NOT renewable at the rate we need them to be to maintain the needs of the almost 7-1/2 billion (and growing at an alarming rate) people on this planet. (A different topic for a different day.)

A perfectly valid topic for every day!

I tend to have an attitude regarding anyone much younger than 70 ever bringing children into the world. (I'm 59 and have no descendants.) No one who cares about children would bring them into the shitcrap world that this one is now.

And unless and until we make serious strides toward breaking the Population Ponzi, we aren't trying -- at all. And we are indeed screwed. Especially those of us like myself, who depend on existing society to continue to function.

Why bring children into a world of famine?
We are, or should be very soon done.
Good riddance for the good of many.

...No one who cares about children would bring them into the shitcrap world that this one is now. ...

Exactly what I've been thinking over recent decades. Even my mother - well before her passing - went from mourning having had only one grandchild from one of her four kids to being grateful that she had only one to worry about. And that one has had a child for the rest of us to worry about...

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

It is heartbreaking and frustrating, and one of the reasons I stopped eating meat 3yrs ago. The way these factory slaughter houses kill these animals is so brutal it is beyond comprehension.
