Sickday Open Thread II
OK, guys, I'm really ready for this to end now!
This is one of those diseases where you feel OK, go back to your normal life, and relapse again immediately. It's happened to me twice.
On the up side, I slept very deeply last night, and haven't felt sick at all today. I feel tired, but like I've come through something, not like I'm ill.
So I'm giving myself a couple more days to get better. By Thursday night, if I'm still feeling sick, I'll schedule a doctor's appointment. I hate the doctor, and especially hate going to the doctor for a virus, because you spend hours of time (fairly unpleasantly spent), a fair amount of money, and then they tell you: "Rest. Drink lots of fluids." But if I'm not genuinely well by Thursday night, that's what I'll do.
Here's hoping this is the real thing this time!
Better Open Thread next week, I promise.

Get well and take care!
About all you can do for the flu is two aspirin and two clean sheets. Keep hydrated too. For stomach issues I recommend clove tea (made with whole cloves) or mint tea to just calm the belly.
Yellow root tea is bitter but really curative too.
(quick summary - http://everygreenherb.com/yellowRoot.html ) It is common along our streams and rivers. I usually just chew the bitter root for sore throat.
I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I don’t do links, but check out Wikipedia on goldenseal. It
does appear to have some bad side effects.

Wikipedia on goldenseal
The Wikipedia article can be found here. Although goldenseal has potential bad side effects (what doesn't?) at least an equivalent concern is that the wild herb is endangered in most of its range and that goldenseal products may contain unsustainably harvested wild goldenseal rather than sustainably farmed goldenseal.

Endangering a species is a valid concern.

a valid concern
Of course it is. But according to the article, it isn't so much human consumption of the herb that is endangering it so much as the consumption of coal mined by mountaintop removal, which destroys large amounts of the species' natural habitat.
Yet another reason to phase coal burning out ASAP.....

Sleep is good.
Hope your body can fight it off by itself (with tender loving care from you).
I had something similar this summer for about 2 months. The only way I managed to go to work was to not eat. The upside was I lost some weight. I had tests run to make sure I wasn't contagious (for work) but nothing showed up in the tests. The doc still wanted to give me antibiotics but I said no (of course!). Whatever it was seems to be gone, I don't know what the heck it was.

Lots of good advice here . . .
Sleeping . . . drinking water . . .
It is terrible when something like that just hangs on. Last spring I had a rather light flu that morphed into a terrible cough. The kind that sounds like you are dying. Never turned into bronchitis but could feel it almost in my chest. My husband teased me about having TB.
Awful. Otherwise I felt fine. Finally I went to the store and bought gummy vitamins for building immunity and doubled up on them. It finally went away.
My parents would have rolled over in their graves at my taking drug store vitamins . . . who made us take teaspoons of brewers yeast, safflower oil, and lecithin . . . amongst a collection of another dozen organic vitamins.
Hope you will find the magic formula that makes it go away quickly!
Marilyn

@mhagle I'm guessing the magic
I am also taking what we around here call the Death Tonic, which is something one of my partners invented: one bottle Bragg's apple cider vinegar (large), one large onion, three hot peppers (any kind, really hot), one quarter cup grated horseradish root (fresh is best), garlic (a whole head if possible, as much as you can stand), a tablespoon of turmeric, and a tablespoon of cinnamon. Whirl all vegetables in a food processor or mince them fine. Then put them in blender with turmeric, cinnamon, and vinegar. Puree on high. Strain it, and pour liquid back into the vinegar bottle. What results from this is a bottle of fierce yellow intensity, which, depending on your feelings about onions, horseradish, garlic and hot peppers, ranges from unpleasant in taste to downright nasty, but is a great immune system boost. Start with 1 teaspoon diluted in one cup of water, and work up to one tablespoon diluted in one cup of water. Do not exceed 1 tablespoon, or you will regret it. It is potent, and can make you vomit if you don't respect it.

Love the first three ingredients
But my stomach really can't take the hot peppers.
Btw, where does one get fresh horseradish root, and what does it look like? My brother-in-law has a marvelous recipe for a horseradish sauce that is so finger licking good with ribs, you need a bib to eat it!

I find it at our local co-op
IIRC, it sort of resembles fresh ginger? (It's been awhile since I purchased any, so don't take this as truth, lol!)
Second day in a row I feel tired, but not sick.
Fingers crossed!

Please remember that that tired feeling is your body still depleted, therefore not yet recovered, and be sure to continue taking care of yourself. Don't push it - but thank you for keeping in touch with those here who care about you - and need your insight!

Keep up your protein intake if you can
from eggs to canned salmon to a bit of chicken liver with bacon. And sleep. The garlic in your vinegar mixture is excellent. There's also a good commercial capsule with 500 mg garlic concentrate that has 8000 mcg of allicin, alliin, and gamma-glutamylcysteines.
In other news, the first juncos appeared here yesterday in glossy new dark hoods; it's now officially fall.
Add me to the list of folks wondering
...how you were feeling. You seemed so certain that it was going to be bad when you were coming down with it. i had flu of sorts — the kind that come with relapses, a couple of years ago. It was very discouraging and took a long time to get rid of it. And the cough lingered for months. I hope you're feeling recovered by the end of the week.

This sounds a lot like the flu I had in the spring. I was sick from mid March through the end of June. Every time I thought I had gotten over it, it would come back. Eventually is went away completely. I wish I had a cure for you. For me, it was just time. Get well soon!

Ginger tea helps, too.
Sorry you are ill. I am not a doctor person either. Shred some ginger root and make a tea. It really helps the tummy and the immune system.

Those symptoms match
the initial symptoms of Lyme disease. So if you were outside in the past week where ticks are, it is something to consider. In the case of Lyme, the 'flu' symptoms only last 2-3 days, then disappear. Then the joints begin to ache.
Good luck. Hopefully, it's just a passing cold or flu.

Good morning CStMS, sorry to hear the illness continues.
Among all the herbs and concoctions consider taking an average sized coffee mug and adding:
Juice 1/2 lemon (Meyer preferred)
1 shot Brandy
1-2 t. sugar
top up with hot water
Can't hang out, have to run up to Berkeley to see dentist.
Take care and get well.

Hi there, sorry to be late....
but I do have L. Borreliosis and as a result am allergic to most prescribed and otc meds. I have to get over bugs on my own.
One set of options which have helped a lot with flu and pneumonia are essential oils. usually I use them in steam, topically mixed with coconut oil and rarely, ingested.
Some suggestions: Ravensarra, Incense (botsweii), chamomille, Eucolytptus, Olive Leaf, citrus, and others. Look up your symptoms and healing naturally, the same oils will turn up over and over.
Agree with ginger and tumeric tea with block pepper corns and clove . Best luck.
