Caucus99percent must grow quickly!

"I've been watching politics a long time and I've never seen anything like the Hillaryites' incapacity to make an argument for their candidate." -- Doug Henwood

"The American ruling class has been trying to figure out for years, if not decades, how to manage decline, how to get Americans to get used to diminished expectations, how to adapt to the notion that life for the next generation will be worse than for the previous generation, and now, how to accept (as Alex Gourevitch reminded me tonight) low to zero growth rates as the new economic normal. Clinton's campaign message isn't just for Bernie voters; it's for everyone. Expect little, deserve less, ask for nothing. When the leading candidate of the more left of the two parties is saying that -- and getting the majority of its voters to embrace that message -- the work of the American ruling class is done." -- Corey Robin

Dear Caucusers,

Please pay no heed to all the nice people on Daily Kos trying to rationalize Markos's early declaration of victory for the Clinton campaign. The problem is not that Clinton isn't going to win -- it's too early to tell still -- but rather that there's really nothing there for us to win beyond, as one diarist here put it, understanding that Markos sold out. Let's take a look at the money paragraphs of Markos' statement. First, on the rhetoric he's planning to ban people for:

Do I need to spell it out? It’s the difference between “We need to put pressure on her to do the right thing on TPP” versus “she’s a sell-out corporatist whore oligarch.”

As if anyone at Daily Kos would ever have the power to put pressure on Hillary Clinton! I can see two ways of putting pressure on Hillary Clinton. 1) threaten not to vote for her if she doesn't enact our agenda. I wrote an organized diary about that. But it's not as if Markos and his team of hall monitors would ever permit it. and 2) make a contribution to Clinton's ceaseless accumulation of money. I suppose that we could all save up our pennies in a few strategic piggybanks, and then when we’ve got enough money, say maybe never, we’ll invite her to speak in front of our organization while being able to pay her standard speaking fee! And maybe, just maybe, at this event she’ll issue some of her patented retractable promises, or whatever she does at those engagements (since we never get to see the transcripts).

Okay, so here's Markos on bannable labels for Clinton:

In general, if you’re resorting to cheap sloganeering like “oligarch” or “warmonger” or “neocon”, you might want to reframe your argument in a more substantive, issue-focused and constructive matter. Again, I’m not interested in furthering the Right’s hate-fueled media machine.

As if the Right wanted to use any of these words! It's not as if the Republicans were against oligarchy, warmongering, or neoconservatism. So, yeah, these are all "Left" labels for Clinton - never mind their appropriateness -- and we are not to talk about them because we are to be brought into conformance with what I once called the "Elmer Fudd Theory of Electoral Victory." Say something nice about Clinton, declaim the Republicans as worse, and be VEWWY VEWWY QUIET about why she wants to be President, about what we expect from her, or, well, about anything.

Oh and this idea of "constructive" criticism of Clinton! Can anyone imagine it? Constructive criticism, as you may have gathered already, has to pertain to what exactly is being constructed. So what would constructive criticism of Clinton look like? "Secretary Clinton, I can't really think of much to suggest that you're not already doing. Be sure not to lie too much when you might get caught by too many people. Censor Sanders some more -- make sure the word about him doesn't get out. Pay the other members of your syndicate well." Or something like that.

So let's be clear -- real political organizing isn't going to happen at Daily Kos. But it needs to happen somewhere -- so why not here?

We should have a bigger server sometime soon here. I know, that's going to cost money. It cost a ton to run a Presidential campaign, too. But that didn't stop Bernie! Anyway, why limit ourselves to a donation box? Let's auction stuff! Or how about a benefit concert or two? Caucus99percent has a chance to be far better than Daily Kos ever was -- because this is a forum for the 99 percent, and not for an owner who wants to bring us into conformance with the 1% in the name of the "Democratic Party."

First thing we have to do around here is create some regular avenues for culture around here. Anyone for a regular column on climate change? Music history (with appropriately danceable videos)? The travails of the 99% as they hope to pay their bills?

Let's recruit a ton more people too. Growth is fun! It's sure a lot more fun than voting for neoliberal candidates year in and year out.

not own me. Political party's are a means to an end that end being representation and a platform that means something. The owners and their enforcers have showed thier hand and I for refuse to have my vote or my loyalty extorted by the elitist neoliberal/neocons who own and run this party. I can and will criticize and oppose what these anti-democratic grifter's tell me is inevitable and then threaten me to support and give my consent to, No way.

I've been floored by the good folks here coming forward the last couple of days offering assistance in making c99p all that it can be.

Just tonight I was contacted by a generous member offering to hook me up with a friend of his in the server business. He quoted very reasonable prices for a dedicated server that will surely meet our needs, now and in the future. I will contact this gentleman tomorrow for further information. That is great news!

I have also been approached by several members who are web developers offering their help. One in particular with many years experience in Drupal development, offering assistance in the site UI/UX and performance. More great news!

Things are moving behind the scenes folks. We will make this happen. When I have a plan put together I will essay it.

Donations are already coming in, thanks to those that have given, you know who you are.

Of the 99, for the 99, by the 99, indeed!

Thanks for this, Cass.

Hey JtC,
Just letting you know that you could add me to some kind of Drupal/Mod/Admin group.

I've done a bunch of CMS/Community development, some even on Drupal.

I'd love to see this site get sexied up a bit and get some better organization of information. Would love to have recent diaries in the sidebar, and maybe even the sidebar on the Right... Wink

I had a recent diaries listing in the left sidebar originally but removed it because it was redundant when scrolling down the diaries page essentially equated to the same thing. Removing the recent diaries list also allowed me to lengthen the recent comment list that many people use to monitor the comments. I'll add the recent diaries again.

after you mentioned about donating by check I went into the PayPal donation page and couldn't find the "donate by check" info. That confused me as just a couple of months ago I had the button up here and the "donate by check" function was on there. So I just gave PayPal a phone call and unfortunately they have temporarily discontinued the "donate by check" feature. That's a real bummer as it was really a handy item. I'll have to go into "Donation Info' link and update that since that was from a couple of moths ago when the donate by check was still a thing. Sorry about any confusion.

I will open a post office box with USPS though for folks to send donations via snailmail. I'll post about it as soon as I get it set up, I hope that will help some folks.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

. . . let a person send money to another person's email or cell. Sender pays a small fee. Recipient gets an email or text, accepts ands the fund are deposited in her bank. Both people have to provide email and bank routing info to Service. My small local bank provides the as part of its service package.

Just an idea.

I use this app to send money to my grandsons at school. Everyone signs up with their email and hooks their account to a bank debit card. They do not take a credit card. It withdraws and deposits directly to this account. It is FREE. NO FEES to the sender or recipient. If you run a business, you can also bill using it. It also keeps a ledger of your transactions. I was very reluctant to hook my bank account to this new-fangled financial app. I did a lot of checking. I called my bank about liability and to find out how much access they could get to my other accounts. I was worried about hackers. My bank said liability on my debit card is limited like a credit card, and they could not have access to any account beyond the checking account assigned to my debit card. I believe Chase is the institution behind the app. Bottom line, it works like a dream. Much better than pay pal or anything like that. It does require all parties to be on the app. however.

We are raising funds to move to a dedicated server that will hopefully be the last migration we'll need to make. We're trying to get ahead of another potential influx of new members that may happen if Kos follows through on the March 15 crackdown. We were caught with our pants down a few days ago with the initial wave when our server crashed from the extra load. We don't want that to happen again,

I'm getting a not insignificant dose of irony (and some schadenfreude as well) observing the difference between DK and c99p with respect to donations.

DK is begging and cajoling users to contribute dollars, and is infested with ads as well. And donations are few and far between.
c99p's users are battering the doors down wanting to give those same dollars!

Something tells me that c99p is doing it right!

but it takes nothing away from what we are trying to accomplish here. If on March 16th, nothing happens, and it's business as usual (I know, highly unlikely, but you never know), having a primary avenue (this site) for truly progressive discussions, causes and action, will keep us more focused and dare I say, rebuild a community of fellow-minded people.

Daily Kos should now be used as any other tool- to spread the word, get more people involved, etc..., I see a future of many crossposts, and I am more than fine with that. After all this , at the very least, it has forced many of us out of comfort zone, to actively seek out a new place, and here we are. That is a great thing. Personally, between Daily Kos, here, and reddit, my plate over-runneth, and I am a happy clam even though I expect to eventually lose DK.

I've never known tomato juice to do much more than make a bigger mess to go along with the stink. Here's a better solution to skunk spray scent removal. Dissolve 1/4 cup of baking soda in a quart of hydrogen peroxide with a good squirt of liquid dish washing soap. Pour it over the dog and rub into the fur. Use all of it and don't try to store it. Leave it on for about 5 minutes then give your dog a bath. Keep it out of their eyes but other than that just have at it. I've used it on both of our 65#+ pit mixes and found it to be completely safe and effective. I suspect it might even work on cats but cats are generally smart enough to not mess with a skunk. Plus a cat bad ass enough to take on a skunk might not take too kindly to the cure. Banking your own blood in advance of trying this with cats seems prudent to me. Good luck.

belonging to both sites is exactly what many of us did. dkos had the megaphone, but it is also had a snake pit full of toxic people mostly supporting Hillary. The threats, taunts, and stress made us want a place where we could relax and enjoy good company on all of the topics we were interested in. c99 is that place.

I logged out of dailykos. I go there each morning without logging in to read LD's BNR and any other diaries on Bernie that are on the rec. list. I make as few clicks as possible. Unless there is a dramatic change of attitude at dkos, I don't want to be there. I do not belong and do not want to belong to any community that gushes over how much they love each other in one diary and then ambushes and skewers a member of the community in the next. There are no loyalty oaths at c99.

I'm working on some essays on topics related to spirituality. I am Pagan, so my form of spirituality contacts and encompasses everything you mention above, Cassiodorus. (And lots of other things, of course.)

One example:
I'm working on getting my Diaries for the Pagan Sabbat (high holiday) of Beltaine (April 30 - May 1) salvaged from DK and prepared for posting here in time for Beltaine of 2016. These Diaries relate to the Haymarket Incident and the Heroes who suffered and died therein, and why we modern leftists should continue celebrating May Day to remember them. I've also got some other materials which plug the cause of the 99% into dancing, too! (I haven't forgotten Emma Goldman's demands on this topic!)

So be careful what you ask for! As you see, I'm working to make sure you -- and the rest of us -- get it!

As if the Right wanted to use any of these words! It's not as if the Republicans were against oligarchy, warmongering, or neoconservatism.

— From Cass responding to "Markos on bannable labels for Clinton."

Aside from satire, there is something mildly sinister about this twisted thinking. It's planted disinformation, of course, but why those three particular words? For sure, they were meant to set a counter intelligence back fire, but why not include at least one smear-word that a Republican would actually use? This seems to go beyond Markos' usual social engineering of his commentariat — which is always on a low boil on the front page.

These are words that do actual harm to Hillary, as a result of the Third Way democrats allegiance to a right wing foreign policy. I recently looked at a few "New Democrat" think tank documents. I recall these words popping up in reference to proposed strategies for presenting the Democratic president as a peace candidate and reluctant warrior. The Third Way strategists walk the razor's edge, talking-the-talk that the Democratic base wants to hear, while signaling the opposite to their backers in the financial and defense sectors, and dog whistling to right-leaning independents. It was artfully done in 2008, and again in 2012. When they complained, disillusioned democrats were told, "You weren't listening. He said he was going to do this. You would know that if you had been paying attention."

But I digress. On the topic of creating a media blast here for authentic democratic values, which includes the forceful defenestration of neocons, warmongerers, and the oligarchy, has everyone seen the breaking expose' of Blue Nation Review? They neatly paralleled Daily Kos by abruptly evolving from a blog where progressives can freely debate — into a ruthless attack dog for Hillary Clinton. The expose' goes deep and names some familiar names.

Hillary Clinton’s Hit Men Target Bernie Sanders at Blue Nation Review

Is a propaganda arm of Hillary Clinton’s presidential juggernaut masquerading as an independent news and opinion site?

That, anyhow, is the charge being leveled by the campaign of Clinton rival Bernie Sanders. They may have a point.

Back in the summer of 2014—when Blue Nation Review was a fledgling blog dedicated to creating “a place where progressives can debate where we want to be as a movement,” per the website’s mission statement — it treated Sanders as a liberal hero.

This was 18 months before BNR, as it’s known, started attacking the 74-year-old Sanders with a zeal normally associated with the Republican assault on Benghazi and the former secretary of state’s private email server.

These days the blog celebrates all things Clinton and relentlessly blames the socialist senator from Vermont for nearly every misguided, corrupt, hypocritical, or wretched thing in American democracy — though it does admit, from time to time, that he’s no Donald Trump.

Even before Sunday night’s CNN-sponsored Democratic debate had ended, BNR’s lead story was accusing Sanders of rudeness and sexism under the headline “Women React to Bernie Sanders Telling Hillary ‘I’m Talking.’”

BNR is “the pond scum of American politics,” said Democratic political consultant Tad Devine, a top strategist for Sanders’s campaign against the Democratic frontrunner. “I’m sure they’re going to do whatever it takes to throw mud at Bernie and discredit him and lie about him, and deceive people. And that’s their business. That’s what they do for a living.”

Devine added: “Our approach to most of this is to ignore it, and I suspect that’s all we’ll continue to do.”

It has been, to say the least, a stunning about-face for BNR—and for the blog’s small coterie of loyal readers, a baffling one as well….

I like Cassiodorus' idea of going big, even beyond Bernie. I bet the money is out there, with no place to go at this point.

about "constructive" criticism of Clinton. One thing to be wary of is Clinton's reputation for "listening." I'm sure she's great at "listening." But just because the other party is "listening" doesn't mean your words mean anything to them. If you want to offer "constructive" criticism of Clinton, you need to address what exactly is being constructed, which for Clinton doesn't really involve you or me.

Clinton manipulates, she doesn't listen. Those "listening" groups of a few people, both when she ran for Senate in NY, and then again in Iowa were just photo ops.
The announcement ( surprise) she was running was a VIDEO! Paranoid control freak, who has never, never listened to anyone or anything, except her inner circle, which is quite large by now, but still controlled by a very few people.

Great. For a start, if anyone is still posting comments at DKos, please be sure to include a link to here.

It's a message to DWS/DNC/DLC not to take us for granted.

If you support Bernie Sanders and you won’t support Hillary Clinton then let the DNC know that by signing and sharing the petition below. This petition doesn’t necessarily mean you will not to vote for Hillary if she is the eventual nominee, but that she will not have your personal support in a general election, such as donations and personal advocacy. Better to let the DNC know now before the race is decided. Hillary is universally unpopular amongst voters 18-29 and independents, two demographics democrats need to win a general election, in addition she has an over 50% disapproval rating. Also Hillary is only winning in states that are not going to matter much in a general election while losing in those that are, by wide margins. Meanwhile Republicans are have broken records for participation in all of the first nominating contests. If Hillary and Trump win their perspective nominations then Trump could not only become our next president but he could also obtain super majorities in the house and the senate.

Be nice to see this get Yuuge. Anything to wake up the DNC/DLC.

Ty. I signed.

One of the things I hope to see here is total truth and honesty. I don't want to be censored by asking about POC supporting Clinton, for example. I don't want to be censored for saying that Hillary Clinton cannot interrupt Bernie Sanders and then have Sanders be called a chauvinist. I want the truth, to hear it and to speak it. I think Identity politics is killing us all. We have more in common than we have differences. We must fight together, as one and not be split by race, gender identity, religion, etc. It's fucking killing us. I like the brutal honesty over at Naked Capitalism and hope it's replicated here with more people writing, blogging etc.

Oh I'll help w donations to get you a new server. This one's a bit slow and with all the traffic that's going to come, you'll need another. Good luck and lets all work together to make c99 a paradigm of what we want in real life.

Thanks for having this site. It's a breath of fresh air.

Don't believe everything you think.

Hi everyone.... just want to thank the creators of this site for giving us an alternative to DKos. I just crawled out from under some flagging for pointing out that the Clinton Foundation has become a money laundering machine for the enrichment of the Clintons and for Hillary's campaign rather than staying with being an international charity with noble goals.

I guess the truth will not be tolerated anymore on that site.

However, I still intend to insert it there whenever I get a chance! ;>)

but what better place to try to make that leap. I'm juggling a few ideas that I would like to write a regular series on, either weekly or bi-weekly. Once my shyness has been fully handled, and I've properly hashed out a good idea, I think I'll give it a go!

And don't worry about making it a series, or whatever.

Just write what you want. It's what I always do. Smile

I fully expect whatever response it gets to be less emotional and more well thought out, independent of the state of agreement. I find caucus99percent to be a much more comfortable posting environment... which is to be expected given that I haven't drunk the blue kool-aid.

A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

Open Thread with someone and write every other week on it until you feel comfortable. It is a good way to get your feet wet and you can write as much or as little as you wish.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy

"Clinton's campaign message isn't just for Bernie voters; it's for everyone. Expect little, deserve less, ask for nothing. When the leading candidate of the more left of the two parties is saying that -- and getting the majority of its voters to embrace that message -- the work of the American ruling class is done." -- Corey Robin

I must admit to an admiration of the elegance of the construct, though. The sheer efficiency of training millions of slaves to not only vote every two years to elect their masters, but to fight over which ones to vote for and to feel empowered by the act of doing so. Since the beginning of "The Great Experiment", the most important voting bloc has not been left or right, liberal or conservative, not the "silent majority", not a racial minority. The most important one is the one that turned "self-interest, rightly understood" inside out. These I call the IVAMBI's : I Vote Against My Best Interests. All the massahs had to do was to maintain the ability to instruct us all in what is best for us. It is so well done, such a perfectly closed loop, so completely reinforced, that it will never be detected by more than just a few even (and perhaps especially) when the evidence is right before our eyes. This reluctance to face the facts seems to be a reaction against asking the question: "If not this, then what am I?"

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody..........

Excellent statement about why we are here. The Hillary campaign is in a big hurry to get to their "lesser evil" argument because they think it will silence progressives. Attacks from the right don't pose as serious a threat as we do.
