The harvest begins

Snake Gourd or Italian Cucuzzi squash (L. siceraria). Beginning near the blue drum, it nearly encompasses the greenhouse structure. So far only one fruit, about 3 ft. long. I don't know when to harvest it for maximum flavor or ripeness.

Hummingbirds on raspberries.
Tomatoes are really starting to ripen. Pear, Early Girl, and Roma have to be harvested daily.
Zuccini is still proliferating and neighbors no longer answering the door.
Broccoli is about done.
Raspberries in cereal, smoothies, over waffles and ice cream. We're keeping up though. Cucumbers and green beans still coming on strong.
Peas are done and I don't know what has happened to the corn. The ears are really small with full sized kernels. Will keep watering and see what happens.
Potatoes and mini sweet peppers are not quite ready yet but we are pulling "new" potatoes and green minis as needed. Romano Red, Anaheim, and Joe Parker Numex ripening long and fat.
Harvesting every day or two is keeping us close to home but this is normal summer for us. Stay around town while the grandkids are out of school.
But we wanted to go south for 50 or 75 miles for the long weekend to enter the total eclipse zone for the Monday morning show. We would have to take four days to avoid the traffic so we're just staying home. Still got our special glasses though (ISO 12312) and will watch a partial eclipse here.
Have a great weekend all.
Happy Harvesting.

No garden fresh tomato salads yet, but
I've certainly eaten more than my share of watermelon.

Didn't plant any Mellon this year.
Local Mellon is so cheap. We buy it twice a week.
Enjoy, fruits of summer, yadda yadda.

Which shade walls do you refer?
I'm asking because I tried to upload a photo of my green beans stretching from the fence up to the roof, but couldn't get it to upload beyond thumbnail;

The greenhouse structure
My plants area pygmies in comparison. Of course it got down to 37 degrees three nights ago.
It took me a while to learn to load pictures. I copy the file, use a photo editor to decrease the size to about a 4x5 inch picture and change the resolution at 480 pixels. There is fewer megabytes to upload. The times I have tried to include a thumbnail it was a disaster.
If we are lucky another diarist may post a comment on the best method for including pictures. I tend to just keep pushing with the computer to get what I want and rarely know exactly why it works.

Thanks for suggestions , SOE.
The entirety of my work is off of a Samsung 3 with no WiFi so I'm amazed I can do what I do.
I think there is a photo editor app I can download, so I'll give it a try.

Great essay . . .
I am about to plant cucuzzi for the first time.
I still think we need to use Moodle to create continuous content. So we can keep the conversations going about our efforts.
Once I get the fall plantings in, I may do it.

Not a big fan of most squashes
so none growing in our small vegetable plot. However, the tomatoes are coming along nicely, with the bell peppers and basil. The Serrano peppers seem to be happy, in addition to the mystery hot pepper that I grew from a farm share seed (probably a Jalapeno, but I don't remember). Anything hotter than a Serrano or Jalapeno is regarded with horror by the rest of the Bollox clan, so I have to stick to various sauces and dry condiments for any real heat.
Carolina Reaper anyone?
Gëzuar!!

I always plant one red cayenne
plant and when I harvest I run a needle and thread through the stems and hang the loop in the kitchen. I just snip what I need till next year. Red Thai peppers too.
Thanks for your comment.

More about Italian Cucuzzi squash
I have no expertise, as I am about to go outside and plant seeds today for the first time. But I watched a bunch of YouTube videos about it. Apparently, to get good production, you have to help with pollination. Below is a video of this guy taking a male flower and dusting a female flower. He says 2, 2 1/2 feet long is the best time to pick them. Finally, he provides a recipe and talks about how he cooks them.

Thank you, Marilyn
for that video. Solves the problem of why I only have one gourd. I'm gonna go have sex this morning. Have many babies.
And the recipe sounds great. I didn't know you could eat the leaves too.
