Some Practical Advice for Nazi Smashers.

So, I'm watching the Antifa and numerous other groups that have decided to challenge the small groups of Nazis who infest our national discourse. It's really great that these folks have decided to attack the ONE group who everyone in the world pretty much agrees are slime.

However, let's be frank, They're doing it WRONG.

Yelling, screaming, and challenging a organized formation from the front individually DOESN'T WORK for anything other than an optic. If all you want are optics, feel free to continue on this path. It will look good on the news when your side is bleeding and the Fascists are standing triumphant, looking like oppressors. If what you really want is a national crackdown on the Nazis, then the best option is to just keep doing what you're doing. Keep harping on this long enough, and when the body count rises high enough, I'm sure that the politicians will be happy to ban protests for the duration of the emergency.

However, if that ISN'T what you want, and instead you want the Nazis to run, be demoralized and generally stop being an effective force, then you NEED to stop playing by their rules.

I'm approaching this as a Military operation, because that's how I think, and what I'm good at. If you don't want to play along, and instead see this as a "People's Movement" of good righteous citizens against evil cruel oppressors, feel free, but no battle has ever been won by a disorganized mob unless the numbers disparity is so huge as to be akin to the tide versus the beach..

So, let's get started, here's some PRACTICAL advice for folks looking to engage those they see as slime of the earth. You've already taken care of the dehumanization, so there's a lot of folks who are itching for a fight. IMHO, that's a poor choice, but since that's what I've got to work with, It's what I'm going to use. (Many of these tactics are VERY old, but we're at the point where we are truly looking at tribal/medieval warfare)

First, you're going to have to expect casualties. I include bruises, bleeding, contusions, and numerous other things that are going to be involved in any street fight. Casualty evacuation needs to be a high priority if you're going to fighting. While a bloody face looks good on TV for riling up folks AGAINST the Nazis, if you actually give a shit about your own people you'll be thinking about that first. Ensure that there's a casualty staging area with at least 5 to 6 folks with at least Combat Life Saver training. It will be better for your people in the long run, and while you do have numbers on your side, throwing away people will reduce your staying power over the long term. People may fight against something in the short term, but in the long term, people fight for their neighbor and their community.

Second, Nazis are using an extremely old tactic. Massed formations are the basic backbone of military strategy. As it currently stands, they are using the Saxon "Shield Wall" as their main tactic. (I misspoke earlier, referring to the tactic as a "Phalanx" when there are no spears involved.) Shield walls are extremely powerful against disorganized attackers from the front. However, there are several extremely powerful counters to the shield wall, which do not require much organization, and can be organized fairly rapidly provided that people are willing to subsume their own personal glory for a serious win.

The most basic counter is to turn the flank. In this scenario, a group of opponents engages the shield wall from the front. There will be fighting here. This group should remember that their goal is to ENGAGE the shield wall, and NOT to defeat it. As a result, you want to draw attention as much as possible. Use foul language, insults, confrontation, shoving, etc, but try not to get involved in a protracted skirmish. You want their attention, as I said. When the Shield wall fully engages, forming their line, that's when a second group needs to turn the flank. Engage from the side, preferably the Nazis RIGHT. (They usually have their shields on the left hand, and if they have any brains whatsoever will have their leaders on the right. Striking from the right has the double benefit of minimizing their ability to respond by engaging the leaders AND inflicting maximum confusion.)

If you're going to do this, remember you must NOT surround the Nazis. The goal is to make them run, not fight to the bitter end. If an opening is available, they will have a much harder time sticking to discipline and when one starts running, they ALL will. As a result you must leave them a clear line of retreat, hopefully one that resembles a safe haven. (A park would serve the purposes perfectly.)

Third, expect the cops to be on their side. While there were some riot cops, they tend to avoid fighting the fascists, because any tactic successfully used against the Nazis can be turned against the pigs as well. (Their tactics are remarkably similar) Expect escalation in the form of chemical weapons, riot pigs, and firepower. At this point you CANNOT win the battle, and need to disengage. Immediately withdraw to the nearest rallying point, which should be set up before hand, and disperse. (Unless of course you WANT to go to jail and fight the cops.)

Street fighting isn't pretty. If you're going to escalate, do it properly. Battles can be won, but it requires a hell of a lot more than talking about how bad the bad guys are on social media. You want to fight, it takes a hell of a lot more than a lone hero.

Surprisingly for me, this is not a snark article. War and fighting are UGLY. Anybody who thinks they can be the hero has never seen a real battle and has no idea what is actually involved. The enemy most certainly is thinking of this shit. If you're going to fight them, remember that they are not as stupid as you think they are.

Excellent advice. As a trained and certified combat medic(at one time) this is Extremely practical advice.
However, engaging these folks in direct confrontation is much like trying to engage the piglice in direct confrontation-a fools errand.
Amateurs speak of tactics, professionals look at logistics. How do we Nullify THEIR logistics and support/improve Ours?
I've written of choke points of power, find these and leverage your power while subsuming theirs. Also, be aware no matter what you are doing or where you are at we are All under surveillance by opposing forces At All Times. @Tall Bald and Ugly Far too many people are itching for a fight, which I have to quote Bill Mauldin on...

"That can't be no Combat Man... He's lookin' fer a fight."

If I were actually to plan something, I certainly wouldn't spell out exactly what I intended to do online. Fortunately for anyone opposing the Nazis, they tend to do just that, not even bothering to code it.

Sometimes, it would be nice if people learned to pay attention to intelligence, especially when it's just handed out.

by John Ralston Saul and there's a chapter where he goes into military tactics pretty heavily, historical and some references to Sun Tzu. The book deals mostly with our new "technocratic" mind set that says everything must be a process, formally laid out, and adhered to under all circumstances. He points out that when this is done in battle, it accounts for lots of casualties and is not flexible in adapting to reality on the ground. Your advice here makes a very similar point. I'm not quite doing it justice as I have not finished the book yet and am still trying to digest lots of it but I see your point here. IF one is going to engage with these loons it can't be done using their tactics.

It doesn't hurt to read a bit about the classic battles where the Shield Wall was defeated. The Battle of Hastings, 1066, is an excellent example.

DMW, this is a work of art worth realizing in practice. Practical advice for weekend warriors or full-time activists. Street fighting is a military operation and has to be treated as such. As someone's tagline says: "Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat".

The worst way to attack is a frontal attack. Yet that's all these disorganized ruffians on BOTH sides are doing. Defenders usually have prepared positions of strength. Attackers have to leave places of their own strength to enter the enemy's strength. Unless you outnumber them at least 3 or 4 to one AND are willing to sustain heavy casualties, this is not the way to go--especially as DMW points out.

Two battles famous in history come to mind. The Battle of Hastings in 1066 is THE classic battle of shield walls. Harold's Housecarls made a magnificent defense, repulsing at least four of William's charges with little loss of their own. But when William's troops feigned a withdrawal in disarray, the Housecarl's smelling victory broke formation. Then William's cavalry turned the Saxon flank--the rest is history as they say.

The second Battle coming to mind is the Battle of Cannae. In this battle, Hannibal's forces were greatly out numbered the Roman legions. But he turned their numerical advantage against them by performing a double envelopment, in effect completely surrounding the Romans, giving them no place to go--and they were slaughtered like pigs in a pen.

Now this tactic again requires training, rather than a flash mob of ruffians (no matter what their cause). Training requires discipline, a very unlikely thing for mobs to achieve, especially anti-authoritarian mobs like antifa. This tactic also requires close quarters fighting, hand-to-hand AND the ability to receive heavy casualties.

Thus it appears that these unruly counter-protests are doomed to failure, fighting the battle the neoNazis wish to fight.

Give the neoNazis a way out, and they will take it. Then adopt a siege mentality--starve them out. Deprive them of funds, respite, sustenance. It takes longer to prevail but the victory will be more complete.

The problem with sieges is that the besieged can often rally reinforcements. But this too requires the reinforcers to be numerous. But even the arrival of reinforcements does not guarantee victory as the Battle of Alesia demonstrated. The crux of the issue is that for more complex military maneuvers such as double envelopment amongst others once again requires discipline, training, clear chain of command and willingness to accept losses.

Should we ever come to the point that such strategically well-planned battles occur on our streets, then the Revolution will have started.

This is all so fucking stupid.

A local club of fancifully dressed civil war buffs decides to protest the removal of an old statue and everybody is treating the non-event like the second coming of Adolph Hitler.

This isn't the 50's where people rightly protested governmentally sanctioned racism. In this case it was the government itself that was on the anti-racist side. The antifa has already won the fucking war. Protesting just gave the defeated side credibility when they deserve none.

And let's be honest, all this 'anti-protest' really tries to accomplish is a groupthink witch hunt of unreconstructed non-believers. It's just as authoritarian (and creepy) as the ideology it is meant to counter. It's simply not possible to mau-mau racism into oblivion, no matter how superior it makes people feel to try.

The best solution: stop trolling other peoples' protests. Ignore the idiots (or simply laugh at them), and everyone else will too.

There's litigation pending over the city's plan to move it, and I just read that back in May the court ordered a six-month delay on relocating the statue so it hasn't been moved yet, and it might never be if the city loses the lawsuit.

Why would Charlottesville racists do so much to protect a Robert E. Lee statue?

The Confederate general has been there, on his horse with hat in hand, since 1924. He remains there, despite a close City Council vote in April to sell and remove the statue and rechristen Lee Park as Emancipation Park. A circuit court judge gave it a reprieve, issuing an injunction that prohibits any sale or removal for six months.

Anyway this is about more than one statue, which is one of hundreds of confederate monuments throughout the south. It looks like a skirmish in a much bigger clash, and it's far from over.

can result in any sort of strategic victory. Pitched battles between opposing groups of protesters will not serve to weaken the far-right extremist cause. On the contrary, such displays of civil violence are more likely to publicize it, and broaden its influence -- an influence which is as of yet, still relatively minor.

Strategically, these kinds of scuffles, protests, and demonstrations are important only to the extent that they can influence or define public perception of the protagonists. We are essentially engaged in a war of perception, not in a war of arms. The "antifa" belligerents would do well to keep in mind that they are playing to a mass audience, and that their actions serve a primarily dramatic purpose, far more than a military purpose.

Furthermore, demonizing the police who are tasked with keeping two opposing sides at bay, is a very poor strategic decision. Even if some, or perhaps many of the cops are sympathetic to the right-wing cause, they are not the enemy. Or rather, they should not be cast in the role of "the enemy", when in fact that is not what they are, for the most part.

Strategically, the best tactic for the Left to use at this time would be strict non-violence. We can ill afford to be widely perceived as aggressors -- as window-breakers, rock-throwers, epithet-screamers, and so on. On the other hand, the American far-right, given enough rope, will surely hang itself. Those clowns who assembled in Charlottesville, dressed up in quasi-military combat gear and bearing Nazi symbols, are their own worst enemies, dramatically speaking.

And the pigs do nothing except fan the flames. The only time they do a damn thing is when some rich person might be inconvenienced.

Public perception is that there is "Nothing we can do to stop" the idiots, legally... so of course we must counter protest! And then comes the head bashing and the Nazis looking like tough guys instead of the idiots they are. There are a LOT of people who think they have nothing to lose, and while it is easy to look at and identify mob mentality when you're outside of it, it's amazing how easy it is to get sucked in when you're in the center.

Yes, the proper thing to do would be to just ignore them and let them play their dress up games. The media is just as responsible for promoting this as the actual perpetrators. There's a reason this is still on the news.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

All I can add is, I have an on going argument with some well-meaning friends that getting into on-line flame wars with people who spout pro-Trump, anti-whatever propaganda accomplishes nothing and choosing to not engage like that in that arena doesn't mean I care any less. Maybe it's that I stay away from almost all social media, but I listen to so much of how people I know talk and it's just so amped up all the time. I always ask if anyone really thinks they're going to change anyone's mind by out shouting them and no one ever has a convincing answer.

I don't know what the answer is, and I'm not suggesting allowing ignorance and hatred to go unchallenged. But it's suicidal to think taking the bait when you're being intentionally provoked accomplishes anything other than more violence. When you behave as they do, you've lost the moral high ground and the rightness of your cause becomes irrelevant.

is being intentionally focused on events and issues that divide, rather than unite the people. Anyone who still does not recognize the fact that our media conglomerates have a manipulative and ideological agenda, has not been paying much attention. Or maybe they've been paying too much attention to msm's highly paid "anchors" and "pundits".

The actual real life differences of opinion that distinguish each of us, one from another, are not nearly so extreme, nor so mutually incompatible, as they are portrayed to be by "The Media". Corporate media create a communal lens, through which the world at large may be perceived, albeit second-hand for the most part. They provide outlines and priorities for the "stories" we are meant to follow, en masse. But the msm lens is not the clear and impartial lens that it pretends to be. It is rather a heavily filtered and distorted lens, through which only selected and approved facts are allowed to pass.

Only quite recently has the msm's inherent duplicity come to be somewhat widely recognized. This has left an enormous gap in the fabric of what most Americans have long considered to be unquestionably true. In my not-so-humble opinion, it's about time we woke the fuck up.
