Saturday, March 5 Caucus and Primary Results!

I didn't see anywhere here to discuss the results that are coming in soon so I thought i'd start one. First time posting here so bare with me.

Huffington Post Election Tracker (You can exclude superdelegate counts)
NYTimes Election Results Page

6:14pm Cruz has won the Kansas Republicans caucus. Results there started coming in a couple of hours ago so hopefully that means we see Dem results soon.

6:18pm With 5% reporting in Maine, Cruz is up 48% to Trump's 35%. Rubio has 9% and Kasich 7%. No exit polls since these are caucuses. and Louisiana doesn't close polls until 9pm ET.

6:29pm Here is part of why I think that Bernie has a chance here.

6:43pm word from the comments is that results should start coming in around 7pm from Kansas. On the Republican side, Cruz crushed it with 51% versus Trump 24%, Rubio 15%, Kasich 9%. 80% reporting.

6:48pm Another thing worth watching. According to 538 Bernie needs 52 delegates today and Hillary needs 57. So don't let Louisiana disappoint you. We beat 52 today and we're on target.

7:01pm Results should be officially coming in soon. In the meantime, these unofficial results are being collected on reddit here (by user GMBoy):

Nebraska Caucus 13: Bernie 954 - Hillary 484
A Kansas Caucus: Bernie 534 - Hillary 154
District 3 Nebraska: Bernie 306 - Hillary 145
Kansas: Bernie 598 - Hillary 336
Kansas District 21: Bernie 530 - Hillary 154

So far those are awesome. The one "Kansas" qualifier suggests 6 delegates for Bernie against 3 for Hillary.

7:30pm well, this is boring with no D results. Kentucky has started to report. With just 4% in Trump leads Cruz 43% to 34%. Rubio and Kasich enjoying some Kentucky bluegrass with a cool 13% and 10% respectively.

7:47pm We need some D results as I hate all of these R posts. But it's good to pay attention. 100% is in for Rs in Kansas. Cruz 48%, Trump 23%, Rubio 17%, and Kasich 11%. 17 delegates thus far for Cruz and 6 for Trump. Zippo for Rubio and Kasich.

8:30pm There is a great post up on DK about the amazing turnout for Bernie in NE/KS. Here is one of the great pics in that post.

8:35pm I'm watching the NWHL playoffs so didn't hear this directly but word is Kansas has been called for Bernie!!! No numbers but here is confirmation from the Kansas City Star.

8:55pm Louisiana polls close in 5 minutes so we should start hearing stuff from there within the hour or so i'd think. It'll trick in like those things usually do. But the news out of Nebraska sounds just as positive as Kansas. The Decision Desk says 5% reporting and it's 61% to 39% for Bernie!

9:08pm CNN calls Nebraska for Bernie! Bernie up 54.8% to 45.2% with 75% in. That is two big wins tonight. They were expected as wins but the margins are very good.

9:10pm Louisiana is now coming in. With 5% Hillary is up 72.4% to 20.9%. Not unexpected there. The margin will be important here as well.

9:17pm And Louisiana has been called for Hillary. Right now she is up 72% to 21%. So we just await the margins to see if Bernie hit his goal of 52 and/or Hillary hit her goal of 57.

9:30pm Expect Bernie's lead in Nebraska to grow. 38 precincts are outstanding and 33 of them are in the Lincoln area. The anecdotal data I saw tonight had Bernie with huge wins in the Lincoln area. Also i've been ignoring it but on the Republican side Trump won Louisiana (9:50pm And all but Lincoln's precincts are reporting for the Dems in Nebraska. Bernie remains up 10.2% so Hillary gained about 0.2 I think. In any case, Lincoln should be a strong result for Bernie but we'll have to see to confirm. While i've heard good reports 33 is a lot of precincts so there might be others that weren't as good.

10:02pm WOW! Bernie won by huge margins in Kansas. 100% reporting and 68% to 32%. It's unclear what the delegate breakdown will be but that bodes well for 20+ delegates I'd think.

10:05pm Record breaking turnout in Kansas. 39,043 voters turned out compared to 37,089 in 2008. That's a 5% increase in 2008 which as we know was a high turnout year. So far Bernie has won all but one state with turnout that is positive or that is less than 20% decline from 2008.

10:55pm Probably my last update but Bernie is gaining in Louisiana a little which bodes well for getting a few more delegates. Right now Hillary is at 51 delegates and Bernie is at 45 delegates today. He'll win one more in Nebraska most likely. And then it's just a question of how well he does in Louisiana but looks likely that he maintains his current pace for his path to the nomination.

Ok one last note. Thanks all for participating tonight! It was so nice to spend most of the evening following the results on a site where we weren't subjected with unsolicited abuse. Looking forward to building up an independent netroots with y'all.

I'm going to consider an alternate universe, where Humphrey won the election. Instead of the Vietnam War continuing for 7 years let's say it continued 8 years. Instead of the EPA getting set up, let's say the EPA got set up. Instead of Nixon going to China, let's say Humphrey didn't go to China because it would give the Republicans political ammunition.

Now let's think about Bush vs Gore, with Gore winning and 9/11 still happening. We might have had to send young people to Afghanistan. We might have had to freak out about shoe bombs that didn't work. Which reminds me....we were shopping yesterday and I saw a woman who at first glance might have been a Muslim terrorist. Turned out she's a nun.

Ok. Moving on, what if McCain had won instead of Obama? We might have had a TPP on the verge of being approved, we might still be fighting Al Gore's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and maybe we would have expanded them into other countries. We might have McCain currently vetting a justice for the Supreme Court who ruled that it was ok for police to kill some dude with a taser because it wasn't unusual force.

So, I've got to tell you, I'm not concerned about Trump vs Hillary or Rubio vs Hillary, in the sense that we'd probably end up with the same results, no matter which of those gets elected. I'd prefer Rubio from the Republican side because he's obviously a puppet. Since the Republican establishment wants Rubio I can see them manipulating Trump into taking Rubio as VP, then removing Trump as quickly as possible.

But this Cruz guy...geez, how'd he get this far?

According to the comments in the BNR open thread on DK, lots of precincts reporting majorities for Bernie. One concern though: the absentee votes disproportionately favor HRC.

Interesting but I guess that makes sense. Bernie's base is more active (which is good because that base will also help GOTV in November).

Is it me or does Cruz look like he's picking up more support than his usual? I know a few of these are evangelical leaning which favors Cruz, but I am a bit surprised by Maine. I haven't quite been following the ins-out of the Republican side, since I still think Trump has it already bagged. Anyways, things that make me go ummmmm....

PS: Long live the edit option!

Progressive to the bone.

haha re: edit option. I honestly don't know. Maine is very rural and I bet Rs there are quite religious. So it could be that. I think in general caucuses work better for him. Caucuses tend to measure enthusiasm of the activist based relative to primaries which I think are more broad in scope. Of course, I think caucuses in primaries are great because they help get people out and talking with their neighbors so there is value in that. But i don't know, i'm just speculating.

especially considering the size of their turnout. the talking heads on cnn that i heard while i was out getting lunch today said that trump's ground game in caucuses was not all it should be, so maybe that accounts for a lot of it, but in other races, it was generally thought to be trump that was driving high turnouts.

cruz' lead in maine is much smaller and as of this point only 9% of the polling sites are reporting, so we'll see.

the avatar is our remaining (not so little) fellow, nicknamed Mister B.

The little Italian Greyhound in my signature line, was 'Lily,' a true (puppy) mill dog hero. She was rescued at age 7 from a Missouri Puppy Mill. She managed to live about 14 more months, before running out of surgical options to cure her terminal facial cancer. She had to be euthanized, but 'her People' decided that her death would not be in vain.

So they founded the excellent non-profit charity, National Mill Dog Rescue, to honor Lily.

Again, thanks for covering the horse race. Mr M and I are always 'hyped up' when the election results are rolling in. And tonight has been a very good night for Bernie!

Yay for dog rescue! So sad about Lily though. I wish we respected animals more than we do.

I also really enjoy the horse race aspect. I just do though i'm used to being disappointed.

I just looked at the calendar. Of course the cut-off is March 15th! What's up after that date?

Lots of West Coast, where Bernie is fairly strong. That's March 22nd and 26th. Wisconsin, where Bernie's strong on Apr. 5.

East and Northeast, NY, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, where Bernie will do well, on Apr. 19th and 26th.

Oregon, May 17th. Bernie will clean up.

Then California with 546 delegates on June 7th. New Jersey too.

Yep. It's unreal how tilted the calendar was this year. Kos and company would see that and acknowledge it if they weren't wedded to their own strange biases this year.

Chris M. was talking with someone this evening on his show who related a conversation he had with a Louisiana voter. When asked if she was feeling the bern? She responded ...what are you talking about?. She had never heard of Bernie. She was a low info Hillary voter. I think this explains a lot of Hillary's votes in the south where people don't have much choice in corporate media and I maybe no access to Internet?

up
0 users have voted.

When wealth rules, democracy dies.

Yes the biggest issue Bernie has to overcome is voter awareness of him and what he stands for. In the southern states it turned out to be too large of a hurdle. So I think he was right to invest in the northern states where there are more liberals and he gets a little more output for the money he has. Hopefully it pays off.

…that Internet access is a Human Right.

Like vocal cords are.

This is a tough concept for Americans to grasp, since they have no directly conferred Human Rights, like the right to affordable food, shelter, or health care. But the rest of the enlightened world is enabling human right to communication and access to information.

It's almost like there is a sentient species occupying this planet.
