Imagine no Bankers Open Thread

The sun is up, I'm up and there is no OT. OTOH, I've got a ton to do today, no plan, no topic, and no real inspiration. However, some ideas --

The machine demands a permanent underclass. Desperation for jobs keeps wages down & production up. Desperation for goods & services drives the desperation for jobs. Eschew faddist crap and non-necessities.

Resilience (self-reliance) is a revolutionary act
Gardening is a revolutionary act
Sharing is a revolutionary act
Charity is a revolutionary act

The first truth is that all life is suffering
The Second Truth is that this suffering is caused by selfish craving and personal desire.

Imagine Mario, resistance is an act, not a word

There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Another sunny day here.
I hope to meet Julian Assange when he gets here. I'm sure he will speak at the local University at some point. Smile

As for the 'strong drink' you asked me if I tried it? Nope nothing stronger than coffee.

Have a nice Sábado all.

catastrophic setbacks in my health. But yesterday, I bought replacement tomatoes and peppers because I am still fighting back. I have been introduced to vegetarianism, found some good products, it's a reasonable way to go but for BACON, which I have not had in at least 6 months.

My balance is still iffy, but I am walking a bit more every day. Broken foot (2/early) is healing but still swollen. At least I can get shoes on, occasionally! Now it's just keeping it together, faking when possible, BTDT. Beautiful blue sky here.

I've traded bacon for Spam. I slice it with a wire cheese slicer, about the thickness of a quarter, and fry the heck (fat) out of it or until crisp.
It's like a cross between bacon and ham, and not as much fat as bacon.

@riverlover I started having pain in my right lower back before Christmas. I just attributed it to muscle flu. In the ensuing weeks and months the pain spread to the front right, down the abdomen, up the chest, into the arm and neck. I had been running on the premise that which doesn't kill you makes you stranger, and seeing I'm already as strange as can be, I'd be fine.
Turned out I had plenty of gall and it's bladder was rocky as hell. Had it yanked Thursday.
In post-op they ask my pain level, and after six months of unrelenting pain I said I'd have to rate in negative numbers. I felt so good I played with grandkids and dogs like I haven't in months. Now I'm paying the price. I'm sore as hell. I should've taken it easier for a few days.

Could you explain what it is that you like about it?

I recently finished watching 12 Reasons Why and found it so intense. When she lost the bank money, it reminded me of the things I had done like that and how I felt after doing it.
I am open to recommendations of a great series to watch if anyone has some.

@snoopydawg Stars Billy Bob Thornton as a has-been, alcoholic attorney living in a dumpy motel, who unwittingly stumbles on a wrongful death case that appears to lead back to the firm he was once a part of. His stand-in paralegal is an active prostitute. Good stuff imho, complete with intrigue, mystery, quirky characters and eyebrow-raising scenes/writing. Not sure if the new season is out yet.

I will look into it. I have a fully Amazon loaded fire tv which comes with a program that allows me to watch almost every tv show and move ever made. I don't have to wait for Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or anyone to release the episodes. And no monthly fees for any of them. Just bought the device, hooked it to my tv and plugged it in.
If anyone is interested, message me. I've had this for over a year and have saved money because I dropped cable.

@snoopydawg

The story is about a new species of human. They are born in clusters of 8. While the members of the new cluster live separate lives all over the globe, they begin to "sense", see, and discover each other. Thus Sense 8 [sensate]. Because they are mentally and emotionally connected, they can materialize or emote themselves into each other lives and feel each others' pleasure and pain. They know when someone is in trouble, and they help each other out when it is needed. Each has a special set of skills or an experience that they can share, and together they help each other out when necessary. The story is about their own individual lives and their lives together as a sensate (Sense8) in the cluster.

The plot thickens as they begin to deepen their connections to each other and try to figure out who and what they are. What is happening to them and why, and what impact it all has on their individual lives. As the plot evolves, they discover there is a villain from a biotech company that wants to kill them, all of them, and destroy their species. It turns into a story about their lives, loves, and fight to survive.

The location and cast are international. The characters are multi-cultural, homosexual, trans-sexual, heterosexual, cross class lines and are good people. Their stories are sad, funny, violent, sensual, romantic, and loving. It shows sex scenes and full frontal nudity male and female in loving ways, and the relationships and bonding between the members of the cluster and their families and partners is also deep, loving, touching, and heartfelt. The mystery plot is dark and interesting. The whole thing is creative as hell and pushes every envelope there is. There is even an ethereal orgy or two.

It was a little slow starting and evolving. It is definitely something to binge watch. Once it gets going and you and it catch up with each other, I think you will love it too.

2 families are suing 'someone' because their daughters committed suicide after watching the show. The show showed her cutting her wrists and dying. Her mom found her in the tub and they are suing her school for allowing the bullying to happen. Most of the things done to her were off campus.
I can see why you feel that it was a psa, but I didn't see it that way. I was in the middle of the bullying at my high school, no one bullied me and my friends because we played sports and I guess off limits. The things or mistakes that she made were the types of mistakes I made and I guess I could empathize with her. The feeling of dread one feels after making a mistake that cost money.
I'm wondering if you tried watching it again if you would see it differently. But since there are so many better shows to watch, maybe not.
House of cards is a good show.
And of course, the game of thrones comes back next month. I read the books years before it got popular. Gave up on it after the 4th book. He didn't start where he left off after a big scene. Instead, he introduced new characters and a different plot line.

It's actually 13 reasons. 12 was a typo.

@snoopydawg

I was bullied K-3 in an inner city school in Detroit because I was white. It wasn't daily, and I never reported it or told my parents. I handled it. OTH, my grandson around 8 encountered one girl at school that constantly hit him. To not get hit, he had to run, so everyday he spent recess and school time being harassed, chased, and hit. He couldn't hit a girl back, and he was miserable. Didn't want to go to school anymore. The school was informed and it "observed". They reported back that they didn't think it was serious because he was smiling and laughing during. We asked if he had to also humiliate himself to tears in front of his peers to have it matter? With that, we called the school's police liaison and told him we wanted to file an assault complaint and we wanted a restraining order against her. That got action. Cop told the school and they called her parents, who put an end to it. She never bothered him again. It is possible she had a crush on him, and it came out more like a Fatal Attraction. Wink

I think parents need to assume more responsibility and control over institutions interacting with their children instead of passively relinquishing authority over their child to others and then blaming them. Not all, but a lot of victimization is agreed to.

I don't think I can appreciate 13 reasons. I might give it another shot though.

From the "Why I don't trust the Food Supply in GroovyTown" Dept.: 18 Salinas farm workers hospitalized after pesticide exposure

...Investigators from the commissioner’s office interviewed the workers at the hospital and took their clothing in for testing after learning of the exposure at 8:30 a.m.

Two fields nearby were treated with pesticides Lannate, Coragen, Movento, Pounce, Actara and Fulfull and fungicides Revus and Previcur around 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hospital officials said a supervisor from Tanimura and Antle said Lannate, the trade name for methomyl, may have been the culprit, but the county investigation is ongoing.

The county agricultural commissioner and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation are investigating the exposure and report the incident to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies because of the number of victims, officials said.

What if it were only 15 workers? Or 10? What's "the system" cutoff for investigating poisoning? Never mind. I don't eat much celery it is hard to digest. But it makes a great chilled snack during summer months I think, carrots too. Organic does cost twice as much here, can't afford to make a healthy choice so "out of sight, out of mind" but then I am part of the problem again. I am really really appreciating my fresh egg spinach and mushroom scrambles, feeling better than usual simply eating fresh food from the farm market. thanks

Trade names

Common names for methomyl include metomil and mesomile. Trade names include Acinate, Agrinate, DuPont 1179, Flytek, Kipsin, Lannate, Lanox, Memilene, Methavin, Methomex, Nudrin, NuBait, Pillarmate and SD 14999 [7]
Toxicity

In acute toxicity testing, methomyl is placed in EPA Toxicity Category I (the highest toxicity category out of four) via the oral route and in eye irritation studies.[6] It is in lower Toxicity Categories for inhalation (Category II), acute dermal effects (Category III), and acute skin irritation (Category IV). Methomyl is not likely to be a carcinogen (EPA carcinogen Category E).[6]
Ecotoxicity

Methomyl has low persistence in the soil environment, with a reported half-life of approximately 14 days.[8] Because of its high solubility in water, and low affinity for soil binding methomyl may have potential for groundwater contamination.[6][7] The estimated aqueous half-life for the insecticide is 6 days in surface water and over 25 weeks in groundwater.[7]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methomyl
At least it is "not likely" to be a carcinogen, although that could mean "not likely ever studied" or "study likely never released" or similar. May those workers be cared for until fully healed, forever.

Speaking of No Bankers: Cannabis labor organizer enters plea in Oakland to fraud, money laundering

According to Rush’s plea agreement, in January 2010 a marijuana entrepreneur loaned Rush $500,000 in cash, ostensibly to be used to develop pieces of real estate property under Rush’s control.

Rush promised to pay the entrepreneur $3,000 in interest per month for 5 years and then pay the balance in a lump sum in January 2015.

But Rush knew that the money he borrowed had been earned in connection with illegal marijuana cultivation activities and that therefore the money was the proceeds of unlawful activity, prosecutors said.
...
Rush used his position in the UFCW to make official recommendations to government entities for the individual’s marijuana business and accepted at least $250,000 of debt forgiveness from the individual, according to prosecutors.

Staying out of anything corporate unless absolutely unavoidable.
While I have given up the herb, (I've been diagnosed recently with 1st stage COPD), the SO is collecting quite a little supply of small glass jars that it comes in from the herb store (we live in Washington state). Don't want to throw them away. Can't take them back for reuse or refill. Definitely don't want to use them for target practice. Need some ideas from the community. They're the size of about a quarter cup. Nice lids.
Any ideas?

@earthling1 In keeping with the theme of De-corporatizing our diets (and everything else possible), radical self care and self-reliance, eschewing as much crap as feasible; use those jars.

I can never get enough small jars for all my spice mixtures etc.
Small jars are great to stick peppers in. I have an overabundance of peppers right now from my garden so I'm freezing them. You can put them in a food processor and chop them up with garlic or ginger or whatever you cook with spice-wise and then spoon them into those jars.....the amount that you would use for a recipe or two. Stick them in the freezer and then pull them out when your'e making a stew, soup, marinade or sauce. They're also good in egg dishes like frittatas etc.

@randtntx
They're pretty small jars, but if I dehydrate peppers and/or spices and chop them up, that might work out nice.
I too have a lot of different varieties of peppers, and herbs.
They are about the size of baby food jars, which reminds me of the old nut, washer, and bolt collections using baby food jars. They would nail or screw the lids to the underside of a cupboard and screw the nut filled jar to the lids.
Thanks for the help.

Apparently that's an scam that's been around since at least 2014. One of my roommates got one of those the other day, said that he was told that his computer was shut down because of porn? on my computer? (didn't occur to him that even if I'd actually had porn on mine, [which I wouldn't, unless some virus installed something] - who'd shut anyone's computer down over that? The NSA and other guys'd probably just watch it, lol. Or that even if it was some shut-down internet issue that it would have been my computer shut down, not his, or the internet access to the whole house) - so he clicked on the number on his screen and did whatever they told him to do... I know nothing about debugging myself, but he couldn't get what they told him to do to save (looked like a phony CCleaner 'link' on his NOTEPAD???) and wanted to get back to a Facebook game so, not knowing what to do, I unplugged his computer and when it came back on was warned about data loss, so hope whatever virus/whatever may have been implanted doesn't take, since they (Edit: it's my other roommate's computer he was using, and none of us can afford replacements...) didn't want to bother with it - but personally, I'd assume that there's a key-logger or something nasty on there, in both his case and yours.

There seem to be a number of different versions of this scam, but there also seem to be instructions on the internet for identifying and removing specific bugs, if you can find a scam listed that's identical to your own. And good luck!
