Trump upends Mexican politics
Donald Trump's presidency is proving to be a disaster for the ruling, neoliberal political party in Mexico - PRI.
By the time the last brick is laid atop President Donald Trump’s Mexican wall, it’s a fair bet that someone more antagonistic toward the U.S. will hold power on its southern side.
Especially if that someone is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Which, thanks to Trump, looks increasingly likely.
Lopez Obrador is a left-wing Social Democrat that barely lost a hotly contested 2006 presidential election.
You could see this one coming all the way back in September.
"If Trump were to win, Lopez Obrador would have a field day"
- Miami Herald columnist Andrés OppenheimerPeña Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party lost six of the nine governorships it held going into that election cycle, a defeat attributed to corruption scandals, the country's weak economy, and rising violence, all of which have dogged the party.
Nieto wasn't popular before Trump won, but since Trump started openly humiliating him, it's gone from bad to worse.
All of this has inflamed Mexican nationalism and helped the left-wing Obrador.
Popular feeling is running so strong that Mexican politicians have little choice but to fall in line. Online campaigns are calling on Mexicans to vacation at home (“Adios Disneylandia... Hola Mexico”). Local governments and activists demand boycotts of U.S. products. Many Mexicans have draped the national flag across their social media pages.
It just sounds less convincing coming from leaders who’ve made a career out of close U.S. ties. Pena Nieto’s approval rating is 12 percent...“The president is a boot-licker,” Solis said. “Lopez Obrador has the guts to stand up to Trump and tell it like it is.”
At the rally, Lopez Obrador -- a 63-year-old with a shock of white hair who’s recently taken to sporting sideburns -- did what he usually does. He blamed “neoliberalism” for rampant inequality and violence, and vowed to protect local farmers from northern competition. “Everything depends on strengthening Mexico,” he said, “so we can confront aggression from abroad with strength.”
Amusingly, the conservatives fear this outcome that they've created.
If Amlo can repeat Lula’s feat, it will spell trouble for Washington, according to Jose Cardenas, a former senior official at the State Department. The Brazilian toned down his populism once he took office. Lopez Obrador, according to Cardenas, bears a closer resemblance to another Latin leader who didn’t.Amlo is a “Hugo Chavez wannabe,” Cardenas wrote in National Review. He warned of likely disputes “on everything from border security, counterterrorism, and drug-war cooperation to deportations and restricting Central American migration.”
Every item on that list is a hot-button issue for Trump. But, as seen from Mexico, they’re primarily northern problems.
Ironically, Obrador's win could grant Trump his wish - gutting NAFTA.
Lopez Obrador would add the country’s U.S.-friendly energy and agriculture policies to the catalog of woes. He says Mexico will consume its own gasoline and food on his watch, instead of importing it.That would mean changes to Nafta, probably not the ones Trump has in mind -- assuming the trade pact survives at all. Its impact on Mexico is hotly debated in any case, and both sides can cite data that backs up their arguments.
Nafta has made no inroads into Mexico’s poverty rate. It stood at 53 percent in 2014, pretty much unchanged from two decades earlier when the trade accord went into effect, according to the World Bank. ....
“Nafta is a straitjacket that has kept 50 percent of our society in poverty” said Senator Manuel Bartlett of the Labor Party. “This is not about being antagonistic to the United States, it’s about being nationalist in defense of Mexico’s interests.”

Be a good change of pace for Mexico. They surely deserve better.

The one hope that Trump brings
That people become so pissed at the ruling parasites that the whole corrupt system is rejected.
Beware the bullshit factories.
Ironically, Trump is invigorating the NWO of neoliberals in ways
he didn't consider. The foregoing statement must be taken with a shaker full of salt because if Trump considers anythings besides the profits he'll make and the size of his hands, it would amaze most of us. As I wrote before, Trump's Mexican Wall will not be brick and mortar, it will be economic--but not in the way he thought.
If Lopez Obrador ousts the PRI candidate, then neoliberalism in Mexico will be immediately be replaced by something the elites will definitely hate--until they learn how to take advantage of it (which they might not be able to do). Raising tariffs can work in two directions. Even if Mexico has a positive trade balance with the U.S., significant American businesses depend upon healthy U.S.-Mexican relations. Volkswagen builds cars in Mexico and may concentrate on selling more of them in a southerly direction--less business in the USA.
Regrettably one cross-border trade will continue to flourish until the US government deschedules marijuana. This of course will be a continuing bonanza for the Prison-Industrial complex and because of asset forfeitures, more money for the police--who then can properly equip themselves with L-rads and tanks.
Here is my fantasy take on what happens to pot trade

Haven't seen that crap here in years.

I live 50 miles from the border. There's already a wall.
Here's an excellent article that covers it all.
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/tomdispatch-operation-stream...
This article is a detailed read that explains how this started under Bill Clinton, in anticipation of the destruction of Mexico's economy under NAFTA and the flood of economic refugees they knew it would create.
It explains how the deportation machine and mandatory prison prior to deportation is what feeds the for-profit prison industry here, far more than the pot trade or drug wars. (And this deadly machine will certainly increase even more now under Trump.)
By the way, most of our weed around here comes from California now. What drugs do come from Mexico these days are not weed, and it comes in on planes, not carried over the border.
Trump's "wall" is ridiculous political bullshit that is utterly disconnected from reality. (Like everything he says.) I won't be surprised if at some point he does a photo op of himself next to the walls and fences that already stand, slicing up our desert, and takes credit for building it.
@Alligator Ed Let's hope the US doesn't
Health and long life to the guy. He sounds like he cares about his people. Let's hope that's true (sounds like it might actually be)

The Mexican Drug Cartels...
The Mexico Cartels are shifting to production of Fentanyl which is blended with heroin. The Fentanyl is synthetic and made in a lab, the Sinaloa cartel has increased poppy production 50% in the last year, the Fentanyl package is small and easier to move undetected. In addition the profits are huge, dwarfing the margin on marijuana...
Here in the northeast heroin addicts are overdosing at an incredible rate. For some EMS is called on time and naloxone is administered in time, others are found dead and too late for EMS...

I hope that the 'leftists' do boot out the neoliberals.
If they can feed, defend, and take care of their own people more power to them. Certainly that's what the people would prefer (IMO) as opposed to having to put their lives in the hands of coyotes who may or may not smuggle them across the border in order that they can make a living. We destroyed the farmers with our cheap (subsidized) grain/corn. How we ever got them to accept it in the first place is a testament to American opportunism and the Mexican government's incompetence/corruption.
It would be hilarious if Mexico was the death of NAFTA.

The American left will be cheering.
Don't bet the farm on that, CSTS. (Although it wouldn't hurt if those of us with already-established Mexican contacts, especially those in Lopez Obrador's corner, called their attention to this Essay!)

It would be a lot easier to build a wall on the northern border there.

We should keep Austin
NAFTA == poverty
And at least 35 percent of ours as well.
NAFTA is no good for anybody's 99 percenters, be they Mexican or US. It benefits only the investor class.
If you live in the USA and work for hourly wages to make your living, the election of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to the Mexican Presidency is in your best interests, as well as those of your counterparts in Mexico.
If Señor Lopez Obrador gets elected, I will tip a tequila in his honor! Were I able to travel, I'd take a trip to Mexico to celebrate it, too!
